Ugh, she 'make tones' rather than really feeling the situation and the psychological state of the character. All show. Have a terrible feeling I'll get lots of hate mail for this... I just don't believe what she's saying.
Grandly sung; Horne could have gotten away with singing this Brunnhilde from Gotterdammerung on stage; she's that good. The role was written for the soprano voice; but technically a mezzo can sing this as well; today we have mezzos singing this like Debora Voigt and Violeta Urmana, with success. Horne could have started a trend back then and sung the Gotterdammerung Brunhilde!
at a recital of Ms. Horne in NYC, I heard Birgit Nilsson who sat near me say: "How does she get all the little notes in?" What would she say now? I think quite impressed.
@65attila One could easily find some other faults with her (her "Grane!" is out of pitch, and she sacrifices a whole part of the text so as to produce the high notes), but if you call her voice "small and light", how would you describe the voice of Barbara Hendriks? Marilyn Horne is stunning here, out of her comfort zone, for sure, but still so convincing!
Long live General Horne!

Horne's voice is too light and small for this role. Barbara Hendricks was
a lyric soprano who did not try to sing this piece.

Great singer in the Wrong Role. Voice is too small and light.
