I beg to differ on that part about the wolf not working because depending on the situation it could have worked. If the wolf was starving then yes preparing a weapon like that = you dead before you get it out. But if that wolf was contesting his territory then such a confrontation includes a stare-down contest that could last for hours till one of the opponents backs-off or attacks so unless he didn't seem threatening as he prepared the weapon it could have worked.
