She is in fuetaventura, she has gone now to the depths below sadly, love fuetaventura so so very much! Holds special memories for me and will always have a special place in my heart.
we loved this ship in Greece in the 70's as the ss australis.great video.sad in the end but it died proudly in the sea, better than being scrapped...
I heard that the reason why she split so easily was because her engines were removed. They were part of the structire of the ship. I also believe that this was an intentional insurance scam, looks like they planned on ditching the ship somewhere and the storm was a convenient reason to let it go. Thats why the anchors were never dropped nor did the crew wait out the storm. Also why January of all months to transport?? It all seems suspicious to me.
No the engines were still in there. The only parts of the ship that were scraped were the lifeboats and davits. The ship was run aground and being pounded by waves for nearly 48 hours before she split. This would have happened, engines or no engines. The anchors were never dropped at the time because nobody was onboard to drop them (with the crew rescued by helicopter). It was a near death experience, so rescue workers had to worry about the stranded crew members before worrying about the ship.
The reason why you do not see the engines in there now is because they were torn out by the tide along with the boilers, which are locatable in several airborne photographs. Not to mention the engines were never intended to take on the full impact of the sea. As for the transport in January, I do not know, but I can tell you that there is no conspiracy about the SS American Star.
Thats interesting, how did you get the anchor when she had both of her anchors not to long ago. In a very recent photo of the bow before it fell over they could still be seen in place.
How the heck do you have an anchor from the S.S. American Star?!?!?!? If somebody sold it to you i'm sorry man, but you got cheated!! Like roaklin said, in a recent photo of the ship, the anchors were very much still there...
lots of people have, mostly natives entered the ship back in 1994 to plunder it. the last recorded people who visited it did that in 2003. But don't forget that about 30 people died when visiting the ship.
Great to see new footage of this liner, shame its all gone now, it would have been so interesting to go on board just to see what it was like inside at this stage
I sailed on her in 1974 from bradford England to sydney australia :-)

What was the black thing floating in the water that the person kept zooming into?
CJDuncan1991 3 years ago
It's not floating...it's the remains of the stern section.
