Is there anywhere you can get those black crossfire bridges? Most motherboards just ship with the tacky copper coloured one, but this Gigabyte board seems to have all black connectors.
Linus, could you please inform me about the circumstances of the Gigabyte GA-X79-UD7 being removed from retail? Apparently it was "Limited Edition" but this fact was never advertised as far as any of the sites I have read are concerned. I turned to Gigabyte because of this one board because it is cleaner and better-looking than the Asus Rampage IV Extreme, while offering the same function (games do not need 64GB of RAM), and also being cheaper. Will they replace this with something even sexier?
@envyus83 I wasn't saying that ALL them can catch fire, its just that this particular one has reviews all over the web saying it catches fire. It was a bad mistake on gigabytes part but they fixed it, which is why there are some five revisions of this board.
-ud7hey Linus thank you for your vids. i just started to watch you and i like the way you explain things. ill be building my very first pc and ill be looking at your vids for direction and instructions.im starting with the x79-ud7 with a 3930k. wish me luck, ill be watching. keep doing what your doing.
Hey there, does the board require two 8pin 12v connections in order to power on? Does it require only 1 with an additional 1 as optional? Both optional? Both required? Kinda lost on why it has 2- just more stability for OC'ing?
Lots of people complain that the ud7 only comes with 4 dimms. This is an OC board and is geared towards OC enthusiasts who will never use more than 32gb of ram. Also, you can hit much higher OC with 4 sticks instead of 8 because there is less stress on the IMC. For people who want a workstation with tons of ram, there is the ud5 which has 8 dimms for that purpose.
Where is the UD3 review? :( I really like the all black layout and 4-way SLi it supports. It's also $279.00 CAD on newegg.ca, but apparently it does not overclock that well. That's if you're wanting a 5.0Ghz OC. It can run stable @ 4.5Ghz, which is nice, but I wouldn't mind a UD3 review in the feature.
why does everybody winge about the fact it doesn have 8 memory slots so few people will ever run 64gb and of those few a even smaller % will ever use that memory....I really like the four slots over the 8 .. This was my main / #1 choice of MB but wont fit my case... BTW love the colour and like how it isnt packed full of stupid even more useless crap than the extra memory slots alike the R4E
This is done wrong. Why make the g1/2 series of boards, then make this board that has different features than the other high end board, but lacks some of the features that the g1 series has. This makes no sense. Pick one series, and pack all the features into that board. Make the g1/g2 boards have over clocking abilities like this, but keep all of its original features....
@AshCFX: Both UD7 and Assassin 2 mobos support the same range of CPUs. However, Assassin 2 have the Bigfoot NPU (supposedly to reduce lag - but not sure how much in practical terms, if any), and a better onboard sound (has the X-FI Digital Audio Processor).
I play games myself but I went for the UD7 mainly because I have a nice dedicated sound card and I like simple elegant motherboards, not bloated ones like ASUS ROG (personal choice, and yes I owned 2 of them ROGs in the past).
So, this one only support 32 gb of memory too, doesn't seem too high end to me. And why may I ask? Their high end board only supports 32gb, really? Every Asus board I seen supports 64gb for lga 2011.
@TheScalesHaveFallen And for ya'll info, I already have the Gigabyte X79 G1 Assassin 2, so don't come at me with all this you'll never use 64 gb nanny nanny boo boo. I know that, its just the fact that this is their high end board and they didn't put the highest options available for the X79 chipset.
@TheScalesHaveFallen nanny nanny boo boo? Are you a black 5 year old? lol.Just because a motherboard may support up to 64 gigs of ram doesn't mean you ever be able to use any where near that much. The board itself does NOT support a cpu powerful enough to run enough apps to utilize even 30 gigs let alone 64. You'd have to run sc2, metro2033, crysis 2, bf3, dvd/blu ray burning program, copy n pasting a blu ray movie from your external storage drive or nas, fully buffer 1hr+ youtube full hd vid,
@TheScalesHaveFallen ...hundred plus tabs open in chrome, ie9, ( or whatever tab enabled browser you use), playing a blu ray movie in another blu ray drive on same pc ALL at the same time. Who cares if they didn't put highest ram options available on this board. it's still probably 2.5 to triple what you'll ever need to use in that board's lifetime.
@TheScalesHaveFallen: Fact: Gigabyte X79 UD5 (the sibling of the UD7) supports 64GB of RAM using 8 DIMM modules.
Plausible: Gigabyte X79 UD7 can support 64GB of RAM using 16GB x 4 DIMM modules. This argument is strengthened given that there are X79 motherboards with 4 DIMM slots that support 64GB of RAM. It may just need a BIOS firmware upgrade from Gigabyte and of course affording more expensive 16GB RAM modules.
Hello. Love your channel ... You may be familiar ARMA2 OA, or ARMA3 If you try to benchmark with this simulator I believe it will crash 2-3 WSLI If you
When you buy a new hardware, first time setting it up, ALWAYS install drivers from CDs that come with it, so you would know what fancy tools you should get with it, so you would have an idea what to look for when you'll be downloading updated drivers.
How often I see when manufactures website will have a lot of stuff missing, or stuff will be hidden somewhere so deep, that even search tool will have trouble finding it.
This shit looks hot.... And yeah, if you do video post rendering like a lot of us do, we could be happy for the extra RAM modules. I'm currently taking way too long to render with 8 gigabytes.
The board looks pretty nice and 4-sli is a great idea if you have the cash. The only problem is, if you do go for 4-way sli you will not be able to use a dedicated soundcard coz as with far too many vendors these day, they have idiotically placed ALL of the PCI-E x1 slots right underneath the x16 slots. Which means you can't use them when a dual slot GPU is in the slot above. And when nearly all gaming GPU's are dual slot... that's just stupid engineering
Maybe they're thinking that if you're willing to drop a ton on 4 way sli that an external DAC/amp combo is not so horribly out of reach. I'm guessing anyone spending that type of cash on video cards would consider such things... unlike you eh?
@Yeremita Yeah im into my music and all but im not THAT into. A dedicated soundcard from experience, makes a lot of difference over an onboard. But an external DAC amp, not really all that necessary for me. My logitech Z906 5.1 speakers sound great through my Auzentech Home Theatre HD. When i put them through the onboard sound - not so great.
@sirchonga i was just being pedantic :P im sure anyone who doesnt have access to wired connection would out that they could install the wireless drivers but interestingly my onboard rj45 port didnt work with the generic driver (or the one on the cd) i had to get the latest on another computer and transfer it on a usb memory stick (it was the gigabyte p67x-ud3-b3 it drove me mad for ages)
If a manufacterur says its is a board for overclockers and gamers. And it has 2 bios's. Why don't they set 1 bios for safe mode and set 1 already overclockt.
It doens't have to be extreem, but just something to help you on your way.
@Ikoniikk The Gigabyte X79 UD7 does support Quad Channel memory with 4 DIMM slots just the same as it would with 8 slots. The only difference is only being able to install up to 32GB of RAM instead of 64GB. And the only users that even need to be looking at installing more than 16GB on SB-E are those looking to build a workstation that will be running specific applications that are capable of using that much RAM. For gamers, benchers, and overclokers the additional RAM is useless.
@jakehall331: You use RJ45 cable connection. Windows 7 and other major modern operating systems come with pre-installed generic network adapter drivers. Therefore you can have access to the Internet. By the way, the unwritten rules and standard way of installation is done via RJ45 cable connection not over wi-fi.
@Soap706 8 slots just takes up available space on the motherboard and adds to the cost of purchase. The majority of users who these boards are marketed towards which is gamers and overclockers will never use anywhere near 16-32GB of RAM so there's not a lot of point in 8 DIMM slots. ASUS has chosen to offer 8 with the Rampage IV Extreme but it also costs $450. The ASUS Rampage IV Formula which is soon coming will only have 4 DIMM slots.
@Madblaster89 It depends on what you want to do with the motherboard. The Assassin 2 is great if your primarily a gamer and looking for just casual overclocking. It has the integrated Creative X-Fi sound and Killer E2100 NIC. Whereas the UD7 OC is designed more with overclocking in mind with a higher 16 phase digital VRM. The UD7 also has 4 way graphics support whereas the Assassin 2 only supports 3 way SLI/Crossfire.
I don't know if Linus mentioned it previously when reviewing the Assassin 2 or UD5 motherboards from Gigabyte but the entire Gigabyte X79 line now also carries an extended 5 year year warranty for customers in the USA and Canada when you register your motherboard with Gigabyte.
Hey Linus, can you make a video on how to create the best all round home theatre media PC? ie best price, specs, small form factor, quiet and so on. Thanks =]
@HennesseyHPE1000 I know, but I've never built a computer before (kinda ironic since I'm subscribed to a PC building channel) and I don't want to spend too much. I also don't really have a clue as to what cases, power supplies and whatnot are ideal.
@HennesseyHPE1000 about $400 CDN, doesn't really matter (preferably mini ITX), casually, YES, sleek.
I've been doing the research and found some decent parts, but just wanted a professional opinion. But, if you have any ideas, they will be thoroughly appreciated. =]
Hey linus, your channel is pretty BOSS and so are the things you unbox, but half the time i dont know what the duce you'r talking about. Ive learned a couple of things from the show but i think you should make a LinusPCschool channel or something. just saying you know so people could enjoy your show more :P
@Getfuzzyful10 i knew nothing technical about computers a couple months ago, i was not stupid, but did not know technical stuff, and between linus and oc3d i would say i know mostly anything about computer components now XD
@Getfuzzyful10 The BIOS is what you configure all of your hardware with. It usually recognizes everything, but you use the BIOS to set up a SSD, overclock your hardware, set up ram timings and so on. And the buttons on the board are for hardcore users. You will not find buttons on many boards, they are used for overclocking and such. I would not worry about buttons seeing as how you are going to be building a HTPC. Just look up a video of someone setting up a BIOS. It's nothing hard to do.

I think the motherboard can support 64GB of RAM but may need BIOS firmware update :) Why believe me?
* The motherboard uses the X79 chipset. The X79 chipset can support up to 128GB of RAM.
* We know that 16GB RAM DIMM modules exist (but currently are geared towards the server market).
* There are X79 motherboards that support 128GB (using 8 DIMM slots) and 64GB (using 4 DIMM slots).
* Putting together what I have said, I think you can get 64GB (16GB x 4) from this Gigabyte motherboard :)

For gamers, benchers, and overclokers the additional RAM is useless.

I prefer old Gigabyte colors. Not their lame ass boring gray/black scheme.

how do you install the wifi drivers from the website without using the cd hmmmm linus? surely you wont have an internet connection
jakehall331 3 months ago
@jakehall331: You use RJ45 cable connection. Windows 7 and other major modern operating systems come with pre-installed generic network adapter drivers. Therefore you can have access to the Internet. By the way, the unwritten rules and standard way of installation is done via RJ45 cable connection not over wi-fi.

is it me or is it that nost motherboard manufacturers are downgrading their RAM slots to 4 instead of 8?
Soap706 3 months ago
@Soap706 8 slots just takes up available space on the motherboard and adds to the cost of purchase. The majority of users who these boards are marketed towards which is gamers and overclockers will never use anywhere near 16-32GB of RAM so there's not a lot of point in 8 DIMM slots. ASUS has chosen to offer 8 with the Rampage IV Extreme but it also costs $450. The ASUS Rampage IV Formula which is soon coming will only have 4 DIMM slots.

@Madblaster89 Apparently it is but dont waste your time on gigabyte
snk9045 3 months ago
@Madblaster89 It depends on what you want to do with the motherboard. The Assassin 2 is great if your primarily a gamer and looking for just casual overclocking. It has the integrated Creative X-Fi sound and Killer E2100 NIC. Whereas the UD7 OC is designed more with overclocking in mind with a higher 16 phase digital VRM. The UD7 also has 4 way graphics support whereas the Assassin 2 only supports 3 way SLI/Crossfire.
Twohothardware 3 months ago
@Twohothardware Well the reason i ask is because this is closer to the assassin 1 rather than the 2

Thanks =]

@thefuf99 HTPC= slow quiet small pc, pretty easy
HennesseyHPE1000 3 months ago
@HennesseyHPE1000 I know, but I've never built a computer before (kinda ironic since I'm subscribed to a PC building channel) and I don't want to spend too much. I also don't really have a clue as to what cases, power supplies and whatnot are ideal.
thefuf99 3 months ago
@thefuf99 I have never built a computer either.
Ok what is your budget?
Do you want to use ATX, mATX, or Mini ITX?
Do you want to game on it?
Do you want it silent?
Do you want it to look sleek or aggressive?
I will help, just answer those questions
HennesseyHPE1000 3 months ago
@HennesseyHPE1000
1- 1200 USD
2- ATX
3- Casualty
4- yes
5- very aggressive
Tanx ^^
yuri00r 3 months ago
@HennesseyHPE1000 about $400 CDN, doesn't really matter (preferably mini ITX), casually, YES, sleek.
I've been doing the research and found some decent parts, but just wanted a professional opinion. But, if you have any ideas, they will be thoroughly appreciated. =]

Hey linus, your channel is pretty BOSS and so are the things you unbox, but half the time i dont know what the duce you'r talking about. Ive learned a couple of things from the show but i think you should make a LinusPCschool channel or something. just saying you know so people could enjoy your show more :P
Getfuzzyful10 3 months ago
@Getfuzzyful10 i knew nothing technical about computers a couple months ago, i was not stupid, but did not know technical stuff, and between linus and oc3d i would say i know mostly anything about computer components now XD
HennesseyHPE1000 3 months ago
@HennesseyHPE1000 yeah i learned alot to but for example i dont know what a bios is what all those buttons in the corner of the board are for
Getfuzzyful10 3 months ago
@Getfuzzyful10 The BIOS is what you configure all of your hardware with. It usually recognizes everything, but you use the BIOS to set up a SSD, overclock your hardware, set up ram timings and so on. And the buttons on the board are for hardcore users. You will not find buttons on many boards, they are used for overclocking and such. I would not worry about buttons seeing as how you are going to be building a HTPC. Just look up a video of someone setting up a BIOS. It's nothing hard to do.
HennesseyHPE1000 3 months ago
Linus, for little things like the vcheckpoints, would you mind adding annotations for them, so we can choose to read them or not
