  • Even this speeded-up version "reveals" the genius of Billy Joel. This simple melody is still one of his best. My song to my lady for 30 years at least. "A smile that heals me"....brilliant.

  • I prefer this version to the CBS remixed one, but whatever version, its a great song:)

  • i can now see why he was pissed at this recording, its like melvin and the chimpmunks

  • Actually The Original Vocals To This Song Isn't Bad , I Bought This Song From I-tunes With New Vocal But The Same 1971 Music Arrangement

  • Yeah, this was a manufacturing and mastering mistake. They changed the speed, like you would on a record player from 33 to 45, and this was the result. So glad this didn't end his career though.

  • No wonder Billy Joel hates this song! The record made him sound like the Bee Gees!

  • @mitchlawmd It's one of his favourite songs (of his own), actually. He just dislikes the recording.

  • Yep, the production was so bad on the album..speeded up to sound like helium, Billy disappeared and went to work at a piano bar under the name Billy martin, The song Piano man is about that gig and he used to sing a song he wrote called Captain Jack. Someone recorded it and a station played it..got great feedback. Cold Spring is a fucking great album.his writing is incredible and the songs are fantastic. I know someone who has one of the 11 originals in print.

  • Billy had a listening party for this album in 1971 and the guests were laughing at his voice. He was so mad he threw the album down the street like a frisbee.

  • I have the 1983 re-issue on CD but i'm looking for the original 1971 Family Productions LP by Philips records

  • @chaoreturnsforgood76 stop looking you will not find it. it is rare, and is not avalible anymore.

  • @chaoreturnsforgood76 Though the original copies of Cold Spring HArbor are rare and are out of print, you can sometimes see a copy for sale up on eBay. It'll cost you a pretty penny, but it's worth it.

  • I Know this album was mastered at the wrong speed.... But I like this version better

  • Audio engineering fail.

  • Different then the standard live version. LOL it's because it was recorded at the wrong speed. Still being under contract he went and hid in a piano bar until his contract ran out giving him the material for...take a wild guess. It really doesn't sound that good in comparison.

  • Cold Spring Harbor was Billy Joel's first solo album, and was released in 1971. He had already released several albums as a member of the bands The Hassles (1966 to 1969) and Attila (1970). Cold Spring Harbor represented Joel's first solo effort. It was released by Family Productions, but through an error in the album's mastering, the songs were slightly too fast, up one half step, causing Joel's voice to sound unnaturally high.

  • finally someone uploads the original version of this song

  • absolutely amazing!!! thank you from this great work!

  • Thanks so much for the original track. Could you please post more? If not the whole album? This is the only place to hear these songs in their purest form.

  • The original album was mastered at the wrong speed so all the songs sounded a half-step sharp, including this song right here.

He's on the verge of sounding like a chipmunk.

I cannot imagine what it must be like to have your music so royally screwed up by someone else.

And to anyone who doesn't believe me, read up about it before you say I'm wrong.

Or better yet, A/B the remastered version and this one. The difference in pitch is unmistakeable.

    Thank you for posting.

  • You are quite correct in what you say, still sounds great though.

  • whoops - unmistakable

  • lol Ask meat loaf about that too.. he blew a gasket when they made his voice screw up on a live performance.

  • @jmillzz2 he said that he had a listening party with all his friends, and they all started laughing when they heard it. He then took it outside and threw it like a frisbee down the street.
