Great tips! It's Valentine's Day night and my "fella" is at his place watching tv, so I think I'm gonna take my other men for a trip to town for a walk in the park and try out some of your leash handling techniques. I'll subscribe, too. That way I'll have something to do and someplace to go with the ones who love me most and we can use your training techniques as homework, exercise, and entertainment! Thanks for being here!!!
Here's the problem.I have a Large dog and I'm not a very strong type of person.I love my dog but he has a reputation for running away. Every time i take him to go out for a walk,he gets super excited and starts to pull like crazy before i can even lock the doors.I have to hold onto him tightly because he's really strong and i have to lock the doors at the same time.I dont want to hold onto him tightly but i have to or he's going to run off again. What should i do?
Is there a leader that a keeshond can`t swipe off it`s nose in 2 seconds flat? I have tried the halti, gentle leader,dogmatic....head down, all off his short snout in seconds with his clever little paw.If it`s too tight and prevents him from panting,he just lies on the floor and won`t walk.I have tried leaving the different leaders on him for him to get used to.No way Jose.He has trained for a year and knows how to walk to heel, when he wants to.How can I make him think he wants to ,ALL THE TIME
@dawggonecrazee Use a prong collar, have him wear it right behind the ears nice and snug. While you're heeling and he doesnt obey command give a quick light pop with the leash. On a scale of 1-10... a 1 or 2 should be fine just to get his attention. Gentle leaders are actually harmful to dogs and cause neck problems as well as halti's with back problems. Use the brand Herm Sprenger and for a pit bull, you'll need either the 2.25mm or 3mm depending on his size.
start off in the garden. maybe have a bottle of water with you.. if she plays up squirt her. you pick the direction.. if she passes across you or turns the wrong way then pick a new direction..
im doing this with my GSD now! we had a trainer come in.. its worked wonders
Thanks so much for making this video. I have been trying this with my Irish wolfhoundX for the past two days and already I see results.. less pulling! horah!
hey eric i have a 6 month old chocolate doberman who is pretty big and extremely strong no matter what i do i cant stop her from pulling on the leash-help!!!!!
You need to hold the dog at your side by the leash, firm, strong. When you walk, without tugging on the dog if he stops, just keep walking, keeping your hand with the leash in it firmly panted at your side. This is your walk, not the dogs. YOU walk the dog, the dog doesn't walk you. If the dog pulls, stop moving. If the dog stops, keep moving. If the dog acts up, put a muzzle on him. This dog needs to learn to respect you out in public, and that means he can't pull on the leash.
I just got a dog last weekend and whenever I take him for a walk he goes crazy at other dogs passing by (shows aggression). Once he see's them he pretty much disregards any command and tries to get to them. This happens with any dog that passes, any help?
I'd yank his leash so hard all four feet are off the ground, as soon as he gets aggressive, along with a loud, firm, NO!!! This dog needs to understand that aggression toward other dogs in public won't be tolerated. I'd also slap a muzzle on him for 15 minutes so he has time to think about what just happened. Some people think it's cute when their dog barks at other animalz but it's a sign of disrespect for them as pack leaders, especially if they're ignoring commands
@vanuvius I'm not a dog trainer, but my instincts, having had dogs for many years, tell me your advice is wrongheaded and ill-advised. It sounds as if you're going on the assumption that dogs process thoughts the same way that humans do, which they certainly do not. According to your advice, if they don't do what you want them to do, force them—brutally if necessary. Do you consider your dog(s) companions or objects to control and recipients of your aggression and power?
First of all, pack leaders don't give a choice. If you want your dog to walk, and he doesn't want to, then he's disrespecting you. Your dog has developed an attitude problem. When you have his leash connected to his harness, and he refuses to walk, just walk and pull him along until he gets moving. Once he starts walking, praise him. if he stops, keep his leash in your hand, and firmly planted at your side, just walk and dont stop until he starts walking.
i'm in preparation mode, because my puppy isn't born yet, and since i'm a teenager *actual 15+ teen* i want to prove that i'll be able to take full responsibility for my dog, and i've been researching trainig tips, and other information like crazy, and your videos really help alot. i plan on watching then a million times over so that there won't be a shadow of a doubt that's i'll be able to take care of my amer pit bull terrier! x3
what if i stopped t make my dog sit but still, she keeps on pulling. ....
now, we walk just like in a range of 2 houses and she was fine while i give her treats.. but when we overlap the 2 houses even just 1 house, she starts pulling especially if there are people and other dogs around or even none... why is that so? please help!
Ok.. to people who have a dog who pull, and those who have a dog who doesn't move... If dog doesn't move, bring some snack you know it likes. Nose is the strongest sense of the dog. That should make it move. If the dog pulls, you stop, and make him sit. Start again, if it pulls, stop again. If you get only 10m in 30m, then thats ok. Your dog will learn that pulling does not get him anywhere. That is the point..
i have a black and white border collie we had to get a chain lead as he was breaking them all the time so how can i hold the lead when i walk him he dis notice that ive stoped he just wants to go im came but he still pulls and that before we leave the house i sit down and he pulls then lies down and as soon as i move he pulls
are collars a bad thing for a dogs throat? my german shepherd is 6 months old and pulls like a train. that can't be good for his throat, I don't know what to buy a harness or a gentle leader..it's gotta be able to hold onto him well, it can't slip off. I tried your tennis ball throwing technique.. my dog only drops the ball if I have another ball now lol..so now I play fetch with 2 balls :S
That would never work for us because our leashes are way too thick. They are made like thick braided ropes. I`ll have to watch more videos to find another technique because these leashes were a little expensive so I don`t want to waste our money by throwing them out and buying more.
~Sigh~ Ya know, I can walk my two dobermans with a shoestring if i wanted to, once a dog learns to walk on a leash correctly its not like its only for that one leash lol. You really dont have to throw anything away. Buy some cheap leashes, and use your good ones later.
hey eric, i have a german shepherd and he's very energetic. It's really hard for me to make him walk because he loves to run. Is there any tip you could give me?? thanks!
If you can not keep up with your german shepherd in terms of speed and endurance, you should not have one.
I run a seven minute mile and my german shepherd can run faster than me, but cannot run a seven minute mile. After 100 yards, he heels. I also practice benevolent leadership: stopping when he pulls, treating and affection when he heels.
Most dogs in the shepherding, working, fighting, terrier groups DO NOT want to walk. You should be able to at least jog/run/blade until they tire out.
hey eric!!! i have a 3 month old chihuahua, when can i start training him wit ha leash? i also have a retractable leash, how can i train him with that?? thanks!!
My problem is that my dog simply cannot be calm. He is not relaxed for a second. Even if he is tired, he wants to walk back and forth, and never wants to go just straight ahead... what is your suggestion?
Head halters (Gentle Leaders and Haltis) are great and I use them all the time. I like the design of the Gentle Leader better than the Halti but they both get excellent results.
I love your videos but I wish you would use an untrained dog. my husky lab mix will never relax , he just wants to pull no matter how long I wait or what I do . thanks for any suggestions
I don't keep my dog in a leash at all. We just communicate and I've heard about the dangers but I didn't had problems at all, she gets along with people and other dogs very well, I like to keep her as free as I can. I have a two year old Shar-Pei.
A leash gives you control. When your dog runs up to someone else's dog you are eventually going to run into some trouble. What will you do when your dog meets another one he doesn't like or vice versa? Or, if your dog bites someone (provoked or not) and has to be quarantined? It happens all the time. Also, it is virtually impossible to guarantee that your dog won't freak out and run into the road or run away if a car crash happens near you? Better safe than sorry - Leashes help save lives.
I've got 2 - 55 lb. dogs (2 & 4 yrs old). Each walks nicely alone on leash using this technique. Where it gets difficult is when both are on leash together; the younger dog wants to lead and begins pulling. I use the same grip, holding both leashes together. It takes a few direction changes to get her to pay more attention to me than the other dog.
like your story about husky pulling, they're so strong for their size. my four month old husky walks fairly well, but sometimes she pulls. good advice not to wrap, sometimes i forget and do that, but i do know it gets worse when i do. i usu. just grab the leash halfway and walk like that with the rest of the leash behind me or in front of me in the other hand. this works for us very well. thanks again eric!
hey! is interesting, I will try with this,,well my dog is black lab called HUMBOLDT,,,(visit my channel to watch him) and he has become better on every walk, but i still have some problems by handle this. I have a question: how can a make my dog to be relaxed when there is another dogs around taking a walk too? he gets EXTREMELY excited, and I don't know what to do to make him feel calmed.
I have a GSD Doberman mix who is 2 yrs old. He is trained in all other things accept leash walking due to his goofyness, lol. He will only walk nicely on a prong collar which I hate using. The problem is that his looks frightens people and he gets even more excited when people react because he wants to play, not bite them. I will try again using your holding technique with a leather and not chain choke collar and see if that works.
some people cover the prong collar with a bandana so that the dog doesn't look so scary. people always assume it's a flat collar under the bandana. =P
My puppy couldn't go for walks until she was about 3 months anyways. And in the period of time the first time we tried to walk her when she was 2 months and now, she is so smart she learned to do it without us teaching her. ( We waited for her 2nd shots) She even learned how not to bight the leash herself.

I used a techniek on my dog that worked verry well.
Just needed to teach him one thing, if he pulls, I stop walking. When he comes sitting next to me, we will start walking again.
He quickly learned not to pull and also to monitor me.

I uses a chain link leash. When the dog bites it, stand still and DO NOT PULL. The dog will stop biting the leash in a few days. Works every time.

For the jumping/scratching on doors, you need to be there with him, say "No." in a very firm voice. The INSTANT he comes down/stops the behavior, praise him and treat him. He will soon associate the treat/praise with NOT scratching/jumping. Training a dog is very simple, reward what you WANT, remove good stuff when behaviors aren't wanted.
