That polyrythmic style was invented by Professor Longhair, but Mac does a good job. For a contemporary practitioner, find some Bruce Katz stuff. he can rock the pianer in any style.
Mac is AMAZING - especially when one considers the piano was not his first choice of instrument (He switched from the guitar due a gunshot wound in the hand)
@IndependentGeorge76 when you say stone junkie, do you mean like drug issues? I assume so but I haven't heard the phrase "stone junkie". I haven't ever heard about him having drug problems but it makes sense since he partied & played at The Last Waltz.
I've heard Mac and Booker each live sing this song with the line "why you wanna holla when you know you wanna swalla goin' down for a dolla". Both of them cut it short and leave out the last part about the dollar on any recorded version I've found of this song. Can't find a Fess version with the line at all. Booker played in Dr. John's band for years, so maybe it's just something they added. Anybody know anything about that ?
Dude! That piano is smokin'!

I saw Doctor John - "The Night Tripper" - at the Bath Jazz & Blues Festival in 1970 - Brilliant!

it's a testament to the qualities of New Orleans cooking that a stone junkie like Dr John is still a little on the pudgie side ;)
