I would tend to believe this song was recorded by Jim at his house or somewhere other than a studio? I also think this was before Maury came along. Wonder about the bass? Heard Jim was friends with Gordon lightfoots bass player, could he be playing on this song? Jims music kept improving after maurys influence and help!!!
@SH000FLY Beautiful... a lifelong fan, I always have always came back to Jim's music when times are tough. I'm not familiar with this song. Thanks so much.
very thoughtful lyrics & clear, simple voice which characterized the priceless gems of the well-preserved early (pre-Top 10) Jim Croce recordings.
Re: Maury playing along here - I don't believe I hear another guitar playing on this gorgeous song, but I do seem to hear the distinct "thump-thump" of an acoustic bass fiddle, gently playing along w/Jim's guitar.
Anyway, thanks for uploading yet another "new memory" of a long-gone musical genius. [;<)
@SH000FLY OK, now I understand why you don't hear the violins :) I was actually talking about "These dreams", that's the song where you can hear the cello and the violins on the studio recorded version (and there are many others actually, ).Were you looking for them in this song? :)
What you're saying its true, Maury was only 24, Jim 30. But, you know, almost everybody says there was a great potential, and somehow it sounds that what they did was not enough or valuable. But I think it was.
@amona27 i've listened to it several more times since you mentioned it, and i can't find them. am i going deaf? i already knew i was dumb :) what strikes me is how young they both were, and maury was only in his 20's, i get sad when i think of what they could have done musically. but, sometimes that is the allure of artists who die before their time -- the untapped potential is unknown. they never had to reach their lounge lizard days, and that is a blessing too.
Met him in Alice Tulley Hall in 1973. He was a humble, gracious person who introduced me to his parents with such warm pride-a gentleman in every sense of the word....a gentle man. We are poorer without him.
Me too. I miss him so much. I really feel for his wife and son. Adrian James Croce was just a baby when the universe took Jim away from them...and us.They really got screwed by the label.
Little attention or credit is given to Maury who is the gentle but driving force in the background heard playing lead and doing harmony vocal. He was also on the plane. He was 24. Jim was 30. Such a loss. :(...
I think this song shows just how much Jim idolized Gordon Lightfoot,he probably did this one while John Stockfish was playing with him

@derekgolba It was a posthumous release, and one of the finest songs he sang. Oh heck, they're all great. Unrivaled talent, he died way too soon.
