The ice tea story is hysterical. Only because I lived in Germany and had a very good German friend and of course I couldn't speak German, so I asked her to ask the sales lady if she had a dress in a different size, she said sure, she turned around and asked the sales lady in English if she had a different size and we all busted out laughing, I told my friend that I could have done that. But this ice tea story had me in stitches and reminded me of that experience in Germany. SO FUNNY!
@catholicpriest1 - I know this sounds pedantic, but there are four guests and one host. I don't know who the guy in the checked suit is shaking their hands at the beginning, but he is on the left, then sits Elke Summer, then Karen and then Richard with John Davidson. That means, by definition, that Karen is sitting in the centre. Even if you discount the guy in the checked suit (who's out of shot) then Richard still isn't in the centre seat.
@Enerjee I think of the chair being the center seat...closest to Johnny (or John Davision in this case). The other guests have moved down the couch. My take on it anyway.
@VASINGER Richard Carpenter didn't sing lead because Karen's voice was their trademark sound. Richard singing wouldn't have earned them the popularity they gained then, nor would it have given them respect they still have in the music industry nearly 30 years after her death.
@Blissycat I think they could have at least done some harmonies together or something. I think variety is the spice of life. I never cared for Karen's voice, but I know many people do like it. It must have been hard being in her shadow. He did all the arranging and composing and didnt get any credit.
I'm thrilled to see what a happy, funny, friendly, well-adjusted woman Karen was. Her anorexia was the one exception. She is utterly charming in this interview.
In addition to being the finest singer of all time, she was an amazing drummer. Look it up!
If you live in Southern California, near Cal State Long Beach, you must see the Carpenter Performing Arts building. It contains a Richard & Karen Carpenter Exhibit, a permanent display of awards and memorabilia. They even have one of Richards pianos on display.
This clip is interesting to me because Karen is so brimming w/energy while Richard seems lethargic and is not very animated at all. I know from the biorgraphy that he was at the peak of his pill addiction at this time. Karen seems slims but is so alive in this clip!!!! Her energy is just running off the screen!! . . .
Karen always had beautiful presence and personality!Karen and Richard adored and appreciated each other's talents. I don't think either of them felt over shadowed!
Hmm, she looks a bit healthier than her later interviews, but still sad to see. Like 10 or 15 pounds would have saved her life! I could do that no problem...Haha yea... ILU Karen!
christ gotta feel for her brother though :( poor guy didnt get nearly as much appreciation as he should've done, at end of the day he wrote all the music and got that drug issue :-/ family or sorrows... but never forgotten!
It seems that Richard felt overshadowed by Karen, and kind of resentful, since she was more outgoing and got more attention than he did. He also seems depressed/taciturn-I wonder what went on in that family when they were growing up? Of course, pain and sensitivity also lead to some very good songs.
@DestroyaDoll Good point-that makes sense. But I've also wondered about his father, who from the few videos I've seen seemed like a very odd character. Not very communicative... wondering if he was "all there"... So maybe it's a combination of quaaludes and not having a healthy role model? :O( Thanks for reminding me about that...peace. :O)
@TubeScrewed I wonder if Davidson was thinking about what had happened to Don Rickles after he broke one of Johnny's things a year or two earlier. ;-)
without reading every 131 comments, I have to say definitely starting at 5:02 is when you see Karen displaying her love for Richard and wanting him to be lead...she was promoting him....look how he is though, could barely complete a sentence. See took up for him on the Bruce Forthsyth (spelling sorry) Show. She said he had the flu. Wow, both of them were really going through some tough stuff..

Soft cheese idiotainment for good white america. "Isn´t she lovely in her childisch way? ha ha ha..." Sweet, isn´t it? That´s what a corrupt government needs: harmless brainwashed citizens, excited to get fooled by the media. Let me guess... you call this "fun", right?
Nice interview. Lookit all those wide collars, suit lapels, pants legs and ties! Also the floppy haircuts and clothes which you know are polyester. Oh my gosh, it's so seventies! Hey, I was there, and glad to get through that style. Anyway, really nice interview; thanks for posting.
I miss Karen, also. But about this entire appearance: I find it odd that everybody made such a big deal about foreign countries and people from other countries. Remember, this was loooong before personal computers, and the world didn't seem as small as it does today.
Karen liked Tatsu Nagashima who gave her a t-shirt with Salada o kudasai in Japanese printed on it, meaning Please give salad which she liked it very much and tried wearing it at restaurants. I miss her very much.
we don't know but Richard knows the times when she was very weak from her eating disorder. Only he knows the times she was near death. I love Karen, I would have married her.
John Davidson!? Man, whatever happened to him!? He was everywhere in the 70's, but have not seen him since I was toddling around. Carpenters were so cool! I loved them and their music is some of the music I first remember and these are fond memories of a time that was simpler and more innocent, despite Vietnam, Nixon..etc. We had more hope. I know every generation says this to the next one, and they balk, but I believe it now that I am not 20 anymore. Thanks for posting.
No, the blond in Zhivago was/is Julie Christie (can see her with Johnny Depp in 'Finding Neverland' with Kate WInslet. I think, although I am probably wrong, is Elke Summer...is I am even spelling it right....(Somer?), who was a big star in the 60s and 70s.
@TheDCAWILDCATS John Davidson is still alive. He's 68, born 1941. Karen Carpenter died 5 years after this show in 1983 but she was obviously afflicted with anorexia at this time.
not childlike -- childish! That dumb ass thought she was too fat, so she starved herself to death. Would you believe it? A warning to all those Twiggy like teenagers who think they have to lose even more weight in order to be models, or show stars...
@schlagerhansi yea, this would help someone! Nice going! She was in recovery when she died. Healthy weight. It was just too much on her heart. And all warnings you want, it doesnt stop anyone. If they want to be thin, or just gain some semblance of control, beating them up further, is counterproductive.
@schlagerhansi Speak about things you have experience with, jackass-not those you have not experienced & are completely ignorant of. That way, you will limit the ignorance to yourself-instead of making the world a stupider place than it already is. Also, don't call a dead woman-who is not here to defend herself-a "dumb ass", unless you want to be put in your worthless, sorry-assed place by people who don't want to hear it. Who knows what in their upbringing made them the way they were-YOU don't.

Wow.. People always bashing Richard for not giving Karen a chance to express herself. And what we see on the most of the shows? She was the one who dominated.
@Nixe1007 I think that has more to do here with Richard under the influence of Quaaludes at the time (it's 1978, and the MGM gig they refer to is the one he cut short due to that, and later went into rehab). In earlier interviews, Richard actually does most of the talking. If Karen didn't talk here, it would've been a very quiet interview.
I think the actress you may be thinking of is Brooke Adams. She appeared in the movie The Dead Zone (among others) with Christopher Walken.
I would like to have seen her cast in the Karen Carpenter Story - but the resemblance may have been a little to much to take for an already emotional story about such a beloved singer.
She looks like an actress that I know from television. Sorry that that was random, but this is bugging me. Who does she looks like? *and yeah, I know, she's Karen Carpenter* I'm just looking to see if anyone else sees a resemblance with a familar actress?
John Davidson says "You go back to the MGM..." Well, a week into their engagement, Richard called it quits and they went back to California. His addiction was so severe that he could not perform. Little did they know that it would be their last concert as a group.
Richard was on quaaludes and Karen was trying to be like her best friend Olivia. If both had only known how special they were just being themselves...

Is that what it is? This is one of the most painful interviews I have ever seen. Karen won't shut up and is rambling on making a moron of herself and Richard looks like deer stuck in the headlights. I don't think she is funny at all, obnoxious and annoying, but not funny.
Calm down, no need to take my head off. I am in no way diminishing her surreal, beautiful voice. I am expressing an opinion on both of their behaviors in this horrendous interview.
@no1zgrl4eva - it does seem a bit awkward, but it was 1978. Richard seems to be a bit tongue-tied and isn't fluent. Maybe he's nervous or it's at the time when he was taking medication to keep himself awake. Karen does appear a lot more confident and seems to be filling in the gaps for Richard.
Watch videos of Karen on the Tonight show in 1973. She was dressed horribly, but she was healthy, and she sang in that rich, deep, contralto voice. 5 years later, here, it's like it's a completely different Karen.
He´s talking about a big promoter in Japan, that used to get many american artists to Japan, so for american artists, that guy meant a chance to go over Japan. I didn´t think that comment was offensive at all.
any dysfunctional type of behavior witnessed in a child is brought on by an external source.
long story short: karen and richards mother was an absolutely controlling, dominant, suppressive, person and that behavior drove karen into death via anexoria.
what else can explain it? anexoria just like low self esteem is not inherited but caused by an external source. no one has ever blamed karen and richards mother but i am sure its true. what else? only serious replies. thank you. rip karen
its really amazing how ordinary she sounds like when she talks but when she sings..oh boy!!true karen its not very much a diva looking like what we have today but just imagine how many millions of people look up to her....
Karen is practically the only celebrity I've seen who doesn't come across as a celebrity, but as a "regular" person. Here is the prettiest by far that I've ever seen her.
Disrespectful, it's sure. And certainly anachronic, 'cause we all know they didn't die in the same year, but Mama Cass (1941-1974) and Karen Carpenter (1950-1983) both died at age 32.
Such a beautiful woman with the most beautiful voice I've ever heard. The musical world will never be the same now that she is gone. We will always miss you, Karen!
Karen is just gorgeous!! As Olivia Newton-John once said: Karen is often thought of as this tragic, depressed figure because of her eating disorder and the sad ballads she sung...but she was actually very charming and funny and social and did a good job of hiding any insecurities she had...I could listen to her talk for hours!
I agree, sweetgirl4JC! Karen was and is so completely beautiful, charming, highly intelligent, and down to earth, all at the same time. Domo Arigato, Karen!
Babe!

Richard seems kind of quiet and depressed here, but Karen is her usual natural, funny, lovely self... even though she doesn't look very strong :-(

Leave her alone!!! Appreciate the music!
keetonplace 3 years ago
shes not looking to good here as you can see the whites in her eyes from her skin being pulled back and shrinking.
They were both very great people and Richard still is a class act.

I love listening to Karen talked she is so real.

Watch videos of Karen on the Tonight show in 1973. She was dressed horribly, but she was healthy, and she sang in that rich, deep, contralto voice. 5 years later, here, it's like it's a completely different Karen.

She's hilarious. They look great to me, skinny, but great.

richard said. He owns Japan? or he only japan?I am japanese.cannot hear it.
shinjunks 3 years ago
he owns!
bcnnatalia 3 years ago
He´s talking about a big promoter in Japan, that used to get many american artists to Japan, so for american artists, that guy meant a chance to go over Japan. I didn´t think that comment was offensive at all.

is the dude from 8 is enough?

This is right before Richard went into rehab for Qaalude abuse. You can tell he's having trouble being coherent here, and Karen is skeletal.
So sad that these two were hit so hard with this extreme celebrity thing that was thrust upon them.
steveatl40 3 years ago 2
yeah I thought that. tragic story, how long until Keira Knightly stars as her in a film?!
bcnnatalia 3 years ago
I think her weight is perfect here. It's so hard to believe that she still wanted to lose more!
mlb0580 3 years ago
She's ridiculously skinny here...not 'perfect.'
steveatl40 3 years ago 5
dude she was like 78 pounds here that isn't perfect at all
noren03 3 years ago 3
she wasn't 78 pounds here. not at this time. she is skinny, but it got much worse.

any dysfunctional type of behavior witnessed in a child is brought on by an external source.
long story short: karen and richards mother was an absolutely controlling, dominant, suppressive, person and that behavior drove karen into death via anexoria.
what else can explain it? anexoria just like low self esteem is not inherited but caused by an external source. no one has ever blamed karen and richards mother but i am sure its true. what else? only serious replies. thank you. rip karen

@john123wayne Actually a lot of people have blamed their mother.

Karen is practically the only celebrity I've seen who doesn't come across as a celebrity, but as a "regular" person. Here is the prettiest by far that I've ever seen her.

If only Karen Carpenter and Mama Cass had shared that one last ham sandwich together, they might both still be alive.

It is mean and a very old joke.
expostfactum 3 years ago
Disrespectful, it's sure. And certainly anachronic, 'cause we all know they didn't die in the same year, but Mama Cass (1941-1974) and Karen Carpenter (1950-1983) both died at age 32.

MaleOrderBride 4 years ago 10
I agree, sweetgirl4JC! Karen was and is so completely beautiful, charming, highly intelligent, and down to earth, all at the same time. Domo Arigato, Karen!
