I used to play this song loud as a teenager, and when it got to the lyrics "I go to school, I write exams, if I pass, if I fail, if I drop out does anyone give a damn?" I cranked the volume super super loud. My parents never got the point. Now that I'm an adult, and much much older, I still crank it!! LOL
"I go to school, I write exams, if I pass if I fail, if I drop out does anyone give a damn? And if they do, they'll soon forget. 'Cause it won't take much for me to show my life ain't over yet."
As a grade 12 student, this song, and especially these lyrics, mean the world to me. Thank you, Barenaked Ladies, for the amazing songs that will be in my life forever.
This is the song I listened to over and over again in the months after my mom died. I couldn't grasp how life was supposed to just keep going as it had now that she was gone. I suppose I owe BNL a massive thank you for helping me get through such a painful time.
I think the shirt is the reason the band broke up.... WTF, get it together guys, reunite the band! We need your beutiful music... nobody is perfect, and the message in all BNL songs (for the most part) is about relationships and healing and keeping it real... you don't abandon friends and family!
The song has always been one of my favorites - It's incredible every time I hear it.... I find the video somewhat disappointing....or lacking something. I mean, it's pretty, and nicely shot, I suppose....I guess it just seems like it doesn't do much justice to how amazing the song sounds. S'pose it doesn't matter - I only came here bc I lost my Gordon and just wanted to listen. :)
@theAbeElement It's a shirt designed to be uncomfortable as a symbolic show of Burden. It was typically worn pre 20th century by people who want to show their commitment to God by consistantly bearing punishment for their sins. Also poor people wore it... more or less. Correct me if I'm wrong haha
Okay, I know this isn't the point of this song, but seriously, look at it from a gender identity perspective. The whole thing becomes a really sad, really deep metaphorical look at societal norms and gender-identity constraints, which I think is awesome in it's own way. Really challenging and thought-provoking.
Probably one of the greatest coming of age tunes ever. Every teenager should listen to it because in my opinion every teenager has probably felt this way at one time or another. The message to me is dont let others define you or what you are supposed to become.
@yankeelmb omg, saw them perform this in SanFran in May at a benefit - the guy who sang this part blew me away! You could feel the emotion sweep the audience. I've been listening to this song on repeat ever since!
Checked this out after hearing Yale's a cappella group, The Duke's Men, cover of this on the BOCA 2011 CD. Must say, I prefer their cover. Sam Tsui has an amazing voice! And I feel like I can absorb the message better in their style.
Steven Page and BNL always prospered better together. I hate how some people are taking sides with either Steven or the group. They all make great music to listen to. Wish they'd get back together someday.
This song makes me think of the point of view of an autistic child -like my son- april is Autism Awareness month- Different is NOT LESS! please support Autism awareness and education!
OMG!! This lead singer...Steven Page isn't apart of BNL anymore?? WHAT??? That's like Hootie and the Blowfish without Darius and Matchbox 20 w/o Rob Thomas<--- more of my most favorite 90's singers!! I guess it's time for me to admit that I am old! This song is amazing by the way!

@xcatfoodmanx yeah but thats why they're under rated because everyone knows if i had a million dollars and nothing else thats there worst song sorry BNL but its just like nirvana and smell like teen spirit its over played they're best song is this, brian wilson, and the flag
@bbycks669 it's not a bad song, not super great, but if i had a million dollars is hardly their worse song, alot of people know BNL songs, pinch me got pretty popular, they play all over North America, and do pretty well, why they had a greatest hit release 1991-2001, one of their best albums. you'd really be surprised about how popular BNL is, people just don't realise its a BNL song til they're told. Want an underrated band, Blue Rodeo, HIGHLY underrated. Nirvana is not something i listen to.

The barenaked ladies are classic! I've been listening to them for 18 years.. that's how old this song is! Brilliant! Great lyrics... heart felt for teenagers and just for life!
@Babushca47 Well, that's all matter of opinion. I rather like some of their videos; most notably 'The Old Apartment'. I dunno, it's all personal preference, lol.
I love it. BNL rock. I got into them back in the 90's and no-one I knew had heard of them. A cople of us were playing guitar and stuff and my best mate and I got into them. We usually listen to country and rode in rodeos and stuff in Australia, so it was quite a shock to some of our friends when we pulled out the guitars and belted this song out and other BNL songs.
The one guy reminds me of a mixture Sean Harmon and the actor that played Martin Keamy (Lost). The lead singer reminds me of Vincent D'Onofrio...either way, I love this song!
Sam Tsui's version of this is just as amazing if not better. (He performs it with the rest of the Acapella group at his University - The Duke's Men of Yale)
I TOTALLY agree! I do LOVE steven page, but his voice is just a tad green here. His talent is undeniable but Sam Tsui sings a killer "What a good boy".
totally disagree with you... Sam has crazy vocal range but he takes all the sincerity out of the song for the sake of showing how good he can sing.. You can tell the emotion that the song was meant to have way better in the BNL/Steven Page version.
@cblaker114 Really? I thought he put a lot of emotion into it. He's from my high school and performed this song for us. Maybe hearing him live is different. I bought the CD's from Duke's Men of Yale and I thought he put emotion into that as well. I don't know.. I guess it's a matter of personal opinion.
@cblaker114 I have to agree with you. Sam has an amazing range but the emotion is missing. He's not invested, he's not painfully in love. Steven Page's expressions in the video just show his feelings and you can hear the depth of emotion in his words, almost like he's going to be destroyed by the power of his feelings. He's freakin' awesome.
@cblaker114 no id have to disagree with you i think that all the emotion in his voice is what the song needed paige is the true song writer ed just wants to write kiddish songs like one week and grade 9 and crap like that even they wrote the theme song to big bang theory we need songs like this songs of truth and love rock on steve your the shit ill keep buying your albums as long as you write them
@bbycks669 ... I have no idea what you're arguing here. It sounds like you're lifting up Steven Paige's version and comparing him to Ed. I was comparing that Sam kid to Paige saying Paige's version was way better. Since you brought it up though, Ed also shares in writing some of their more sincere songs: Wrap Your Arms Around Me, Blame it On Me, and others.. Obviously BNL is better with Steve, but they'll survive. PS....Their new album blows Paige's out of the water.
we followed you from gordon to alleghany to our first camping trip---- to our first new years with yoyu guys in 1999 at hsbc and we love you that was the last new years for some of our best friends---they will live on with some of your songs we promise!!!
I used to play this song loud as a teenager, and when it got to the lyrics "I go to school, I write exams, if I pass, if I fail, if I drop out does anyone give a damn?" steven page is easily one of my favorite vocalists of all time. this song is a perfect example why. lots of sheer emotion here. just beautiful.

You can tell the emotion that the song was meant to have way better in the BNL/Steven Page version.
cblaker114 1 year ago 39
@cblaker114 Really? I thought he put a lot of emotion into it. He's from my high school and performed this song for us. Maybe hearing him live is different. I bought the CD's from Duke's Men of Yale and I thought he put emotion into that as well. I don't know.. I guess it's a matter of personal opinion.
JordanMatthewFair 1 year ago
@cblaker114 I have to agree with you. Sam has an amazing range but the emotion is missing. He's not invested, he's not painfully in love. Steven Page's expressions in the video just show his feelings and you can hear the depth of emotion in his words, almost like he's going to be destroyed by the power of his feelings. He's freakin' awesome.

@cblaker114 no id have to disagree with you i think that all the emotion in his voice is what the song needed paige is the true song writer ed just wants to write kiddish songs like one week and grade 9 and crap like that even they wrote the theme song to big bang theory we need songs like this songs of truth and love rock on steve your the shit ill keep buying your albums as long as you write them
bbycks669 1 year ago
@bbycks669 ... I have no idea what you're arguing here. It sounds like you're lifting up Steven Paige's version and comparing him to Ed. I was comparing that Sam kid to Paige saying Paige's version was way better. Since you brought it up though, Ed also shares in writing some of their more sincere songs: Wrap Your Arms Around Me, Blame it On Me, and others.. Obviously BNL is better with Steve, but they'll survive. PS....Their new album blows Paige's out of the water.
cblaker114 1 year ago
@bbycks669 ... also.. Ed did help write this song....soooo... yeah.. no idea where you were going with this.

@magicalaugh I disagree
