Yea, considering he was only 5'10" and 205 lbs. max and only missed one game in a 13 year career, you can't blame him for taking his fair share of pain killers. He didn't "love hard drugs" as much as he was just committed to his craft. By no means am I trying to justify his unquestioned drug/pain killer abuse, but one can only take so much until they either sit games out, or pop some pills. Hell, look at Brett Favre......
The greatest to ever ever play the game, bar none!! You will never be forgotten Sweetness, thanks for all those incredible seasons! R.I.P MY CHILDHOOD HERO!!!!!!!!!!!
Heaven now houses the greatest football player of all time, and his name is WALTER PAYTON!!! There will never be another player like Walter, what an honor it was to get to watch him every Sunday growing up in Chicago. R.I.P SWEETNESS, HOPE YOU'RE RUNNING OVER GUYS UP STAIRS, LIKE YOU DID HERE.
I bet his mom talks about him all the time. She's so damn proud of son! He's head and shoulders the greatest football player of all time. If you notice the in the 80's the bears only worked on improving the defense, because Walter carried the offense on his shoulders.
Barry Sanders could have had his record, but didn't feel right with it. Emmitt Smith the most overrated RB of all time gets it because nobody would talk about him otherwise.
@believeinbeer sanders reason for retiring is that he didnt see a reason to play anymore as well as respecting payton and emmit smith just played longer
@TheDoublec123 the thing about payton was that as good of a player he was, he was an even better person. if you want to measure yourself against him, don't aim to be a better player, but rather to be as generous and upstanding as the man he was. the world would be a better place if we all modeled ourselves after him
@TheDoublec123 you shouldnt strive to be be as good as or better than someone else, you should strive to be the best you can be, in other words be the best you, because everyone is unique, im paraphrasing what i had heard payton say in a documentary once where he was saying i dont strive to be as good as other guys who had played before me, i want to be as good as i am able to be, i work to reach my full potential what ever it maybe.
I love those runs when he's about to get stopped just short of the goal line, but instead he attacks the defender and they both fall into the end zone.
It's a shame that all of the running backs today are either to stupid or to afraid to run like Walter.
I'm not even a football fan and I love to watch Walter Payton perform his magic. I get a great satisfaction seeing a huge guy get two arms on him like he's going to take him down and then Payton just POPS the guy and he continues on his way. He was truly a master of his craft.

This is really great... 11 years ago today he died.
My favorite ones are the full speed ones... for as silly as it makes the defenders in slow motion, you can truly see the POWER at full speed.
