@oldhairyguy Man, that's cool! Lee's how old now? I've wanted to meet him, I've learned a lot of of tunes from his playing, and I've wanted to ask him about working in the mines. Also, Morgan, many people said he couldn't sing, but I learned one tune from him, London City Where I Did Dwell, and he also worked in the caol mines of Eastern KY, and I guess he had to quit school early to help his Dad in the depression years.
Did Lee play any clawhammer for you? His version of "Pretty Polly" on "Mountain Music of Kentucky" is one of my favourites and I'm curious as to whether he ever hits the drone string with his nail on the down beat.
does anyone know what tuning he is in there? i tried to figure it out from the part where he goes over each string but he goes to fast for a beginner like me. thanks!
Lee is very much alive, and participates in local bands, festivals, and hosts field trips sponsored by the Cowan Creek Music School in Whitesburg, KY.
Lee's son Johnie was a friend of my dads. They are good people.

I agree about it being the best shady grove I've ever heard, and I've heard lots of people do it. Is he still alive?
