make no mistake red mitchell was a bass giant.he was a virtuoso .total command of his instrument.i often think he should have been a horn player but thats just an observation..ray brown nhop mraz swainson and a few more were fabulous soloists but more at home in a rythmn section enviroment than red. clark terry is a trumpet great one of the very best.many thaks.
I started recording my original songs at a local studio recently. The line-up is bass, drums, and two vocalists. I've had several people (most of them musicians) tell me that I need - NEED - to put some guitar and/or keyboards on it. Ummm...how about FUCK OFF? I thought music was art. I'm going for something, I have a different vision for my music. You don't NEED guitar or keys. Perhaps they haven't heard of Colin Hodgkinson, the band Clatter, Dos...or Red Mitchell
Damn, I love this video. I started listening to Red Mitchell in the 50's when he was playing with the Gerry Mulligan Quartet. He was using a different bass then (I believe) and a completely different setup - gut strings and standard bass tuning in 4ths. With his bass tuned in 5ths, but mostly because of the steel strings and lower strings it completely changed his sound (not for the better or worse - just changed) and opened up all kinds of new technical potentials. I love you Red Mitchell!
Isn´t this just wonderfull - swing, joy professionalism and superb music skills, and Mr. Terry do not need to play high notes, he is interesting to listen to - always.
I love when Red teams up with another great player for a duo. You guys should check out Red and Jim Hall's album they made together. Just two dudes jamming.
Also, the double horn trick Terry's using is totally badass. Haven't seen it before.
I love it!! These guys are just jammin on this classic tune. Clark terry plays with so much nuance and style. One of my favorite trumpeters. Thanks for puttin this up man.
Red was great. I had tickets to his last consert in Stockholm bit misses it. À month later he was dead

Great video! I wonder what mouthpiece Clark Terry uses. This is definitely the brightest, most unwimpy flugel sound I've ever heard.

The toughest part about the 2 horn trick is keeping the Harmon in.

you hear allot of everyone in wynton's sound.
I think the less you hear in his sound is wynton himself.
