f1 bmw's of the 1980's had 1000bhp++ from 1.3litre 4 cylinder based on production block pretty much.......the 80's was a great time for technology in all levels of racing.....le mans, f1, rallying, touring cars......too many rules now me thinks....good vid....audi's looked cool
I see a lot of good comments below and some negative. I checked the records and Audi did not race after the 89 season. Were there rule changes? In addition, the 90 did not win the GTO class. They failed to enter enough races and had some DNF's that took them out of the points race at the end. If their point was to show off their technology and I am sure it was, they succeeded. Anyone notice that Mazda was one of the most successful in the IMSA series?
Rof,l so since it was an American event at which they got their asses handed to them by a far superior intellect, they decide to call it a unfair advantage, utter shit, the only thing Americans were and always will be good at is creating turmoil and getting involved in foreign affairs and instigating wars, what else do they contribute to modern society besides pestilence, greed, famine, planetary, and most important of all, self destruction. What a day to be an American huh, imbeciles...
if the american engineers would have been intelligent, they would have tried to copy the quattro-technology or tried to make their own 4WD racecar. what´s that telling us? american engineers think too conventional!
Detroit survived for so long solely because they made all their money from trucks, which still is the most sold type of vehicle in the USA. For over a decade the Ford F-150 pick-up truck was the biggest seller of all cars sold. Since gasoline (petrol) is insanely cheap in the USA and the government insisted on living in a world where there are limitless of resources (or cheap imported oil from other countries, i.e Middle East) there was no need to design anything else but trucks.
@McLarenMercedes and that´s a reason why american car brands are not very established in europe. but i also have to say the european standards and the usa standards are very different
Well it seems reality finally caught up with the big three in Detroit. If not for the US Government bail-out to save jobs both GM and Chrysler would have gone out of business. Ford survived thanks to selling most of its brands to others.
@georg214 amen to that haha. they also used the race on Sunday, win on monday philosophy, too bad the r10/r15 diesel is in a pointless suv! I'd much rather see it in the a8 chassis.
@MSTC81 Noch witziger fand ich, was der Röhrl dazu gesagt hat: "Man muss das vorrausahnen, denn wenn Du das im Hintern fühlst, dann hast Du das letzte mal im Leben was gefühlt!..."
Tome it's even funnier, what Walter Röhrl said: "You have to guess it all in advance, cause if You feel it in the butt, it will be the last thing that You feel in Your life!"
so because other makers don't want to develop all wheel drive cars, the better engineered car is banded. this action has led to a lesser quality of motor vehicle released to the market in usa and aust. just to name a few.
This was an awesomely beautiful car I got to see it race twice in it final year here. The LA Car show at that time always had a viewing hall for race cars Jeff Brahbam was there that year with the IMSA GTP car big crowd. As we were leaving there sat this car in another room roped off with just an Audi sitting bored behind a desk no one there to admire this great car. We spoke about Audi's racing history and than guess what? he allowed me view it close up. What a great moment in my life.
this is my dream car...straight 5 cylinder...EXTRA TURBO :)...and Quattro...i think this isn´t mutch slover than some F1 :) you know Vorsprung durch technik !
It's not unusual to see this kind of decision: when a car uses a new feature the others should study it, copy and use it too (that's the essence of motor-racing, always improving) but usually the fast way to match the performances of the cars in the champ (ban the new tech) it's preferred because it's less expensive.
If 4wd it's such a stunning vantage, all sports car (from touring to super-touring and Gt) should use it, it would also give an hand to 4wd system development for normal cars (you know, racing tech it's often a referring point to those used after some years in production cars) giving us better cars and faster races to watch...
@SNUBNOSESAM Only because... There was a thing called the IRL/CART split and IMSA was bought by Andy Evans who made his money being Bill Gate's accountant and turned it into Professional Sportscar. All this upheaval allowed NASCAR who's competition was increasing, the quality of the fields and the teams, was able to take advantage and you have your present reality.
Kidding right? The Audi's were all about AWD. They were fast, they were powerful but the AWD made them stick to the track like slot cars. Ever heard of set-up? Ever see these cars pass on the outside of a hairpin 20 mph faster than the next fastest car? Can't do that with RWD no matter your power or set-up.
I think clarkson has competition on what the best looking car ever built is.He should put this on top gear and get the stig to do a lap time and see whats what.
Nonsense, without turbo the engine would have produced around 200 HP. That's very little compared to the actual output of the turbo Audi 90 GTO which was over 700 HP.
The actual 'unfair advantage' of this car was the turbo, which at that point was not correctly regulated (no boost limit - this Audi had 3-4 atm boost!!). It is also important to mention that this Audi did not win the IMSA championship (GTO class) - this film seems to imply the opposite.
Quattro was not a significant advantage in IMSA, as it is not an advantage in road racing in general. The losses in power due to AWD config, the additional weight do not make up for the gains in traction.
Indeed, the real 'unfair advantage' was the turbo. By the end of the 80s all IMSAcars were turbo, because the regulations favored them. There was a 15 to 20% weight penalty for the turbo cars, but they were having at 50% more power, thus the edge in racing.
First off, I grew after IMSA's glory days, in fact this video is probably the most exposure to the series I've had. So I have no real knowledge of IMSA and its regulations.
I agree that in perfect conditions quattro gives no real advantage, but as soon as it starts to rain a bit, or whenever a layer of dust or debris or tire scrub appears on the track(which is very often), the benefits of quattro are unbeatable. If they aren't then why would so many series today disallow all wheel drive?
You are incorrect. Listen to the last 2 minutes and it explains that even in dry conditions - awd CAN be an advantage. Of course - engine, suspension, balance and driver also play a part. If you configure it correctly - the awd certainly can be an advantage in the dry...
Ok - glad you clarified - but why bother to mention something that will NEVER exist. No road will EVER be perfect. The reality is that if you have the right configuration - you can make almost any drivetrail win at something. There is no - "one size fits all" in racing or in a passenger car. Everything has plusses and minuses. The reality is that Audi has made AWD a viable alternative in racing and passenger cars....and they've succeded as well.
huckebeinFW - you answered your won question. Audi made such a powerful engine (which also definitely deserves kudos) because Quattro AWD has a weight penalty. Both go hand in hand. There is no point in having all that power if you can't keep the car on the road. As the drivers said - the more the track deteriorates (which undoubtedly it will) Quattro always provides the traction advantage. Either way you spin - the powerful engine or the Quattro - Audi got itself banned.
Audi got the vice champion title because like in the video showed they screwed the first 2 races. If the car would be running from th ebeginning they would have won the title.
Audi have a history of changing the rules and dominating sport events.... Quattro + TDI technology spring to mind immediately but as this video proves Audi again :)
It's not about changing the rules. It's about finding advantages the rules permit! That's what their strapline says: "Vorsprung durch Technik" ("Advancement Through Technology"). Audi wants to find new ways to be a step ahead instead of just following the crowd. Unfortunately there are not many series left that allows this kinda thinking due to strict regulations.
i hate when a car or team or certain technology is banned. quit being a sore loser and make something better. and if your scared of what that technology brings to the table, quit. someone else out there will be happy to take your place!
Anssi - Unfair Advantage is a reference to the Book written by Mark Donohue. It refers to the advantage some teams have when they search and exploit the possibilities for the car while still in the rules. It's not truly unfair, just seems so.
What they mean by unfair advantage is that the audi's are 4 wheel drive while the other cars are rear wheel drive. The audi's would have twice the grip even with thinner tyres on them.Well at least thats what i think he means lol.
Why this movie is called unfair advantage? Rules are same for everyone. Just shows how pathetic american motorsports are. If they cant win in fair game they ban you, then bomb your country to stoneage.
hahahaha thats so freaking true, stupid american motor sports. that also happen here in australia with the R32 gtrs they could keep up with them so they just ban them.
in the late 90's they were doing the same thing in BTCC and WTCC- the debut year I think the S4 won almost every single race, then it took them like 2 years to even out the playing field
why do you think there are no AWD road racing cars now?
Great clip. I was at the Miami race. Those cars looked great, sounded great and just seemed to be able to take lines that none of the other cars could.
6:12mins audis had a unfair advantage made me laugh so much,it was like listening to the teams when the s1 quattro turned up.How amazing did the 200 and the 90 look, can you get that body kit for them?
Hi i went to a vw sport day called DUB SPORT just outside of London and there was a audi team there they had the ex works team car for sale you got lots of extra's to... wheels, tyre's,gearbox.. and engine parts.... they wanted £27000 for it.. does anyone no how much power these cars had?
I was at Laguna Seca in '89 to see the F40 IMSA debut.. Jean Alesi had the lead in the F40 until the last few laps, but then it was the Audis that finished 1-2 after the F40's Pirelli tires decided to call it quits.. I'll never forget the sound of those cars
@DerFahrer5000 You saw Alesi in an F40?! Lucky bastard, I'd have paid good money to see him racing Ferrari's most beautiful car. I have seen him driving in a European sports car race and he was just as quick as in F1.
@Nasum6 VW and Opel make excellent race-cars if you ask me, maybe not as fast as a 800hp Audi 90 but still very good race-cars, just take a look at the Berg Cup
Ah yes... hilarious - because Ford and their Mustang still have troubles with their communications? - Let alone a system that monitors exhaust temp of each cylinder, intake pressures, AFR, MAF + more to 2+ decimals accurately and adjust accordingly. Hilarious because these were achievable by Audi almost 20 years ago when Mustang was still struggling to build a car with a set of nuts that could pass emissions? Well, let's both pretend you were laughing at the other cars - like the rest of us.. =D
No, not entirely. The drivetrain remained nearly unchanged, the body has minimal modifications (its still a four-door) and it is the same 5-cyl engine found in the street version, albeit modified.
but 4 door sedans are nothing special in european touring car history. In the DTM there are sedans ever since. For americans it may look strange but touring cars in europe are always 4 door sedans like Mercedes C-class,BMW 3 series,Alfa 156.
The IMSA Audi 90 has not much in common with the stock Audi 90. The transmission is different, the engine heavily modified (maybe the block is the same - nothing else. The body is completely different! It actually had a tube frame with a Audi 90 "shell".
IMSA was not the first "silhouette" formula. I agree with you though. This was a purpose built race-car. Totally within the rules of the day though. In more stock formulas, the Audi A4's were eventually banned (in quattro form anyway). Audi seems to have a habit of crushing race oppositions one way or the other - even going back to Auto Union days...
True, but this is the case today as well. The GTO class, in which Audi 90 GTO competed in, is today the GT1 class from ALMS. In GT1 only the engine block is kept. Transmission, most of the chassis and the aero package are completely different from stock.
I love Muscle Cars. I love their sound, I love their design. Some time i will get one. BUT:
German drivers are better schooled in driving and German Cars where better, are better and will allways be better than all others in the world.

@AnssiMarkkanen Quattro has been banded in European race series too. For the same reasons. Asshat!
cassidy6678 1 year ago
@AnssiMarkkanen
in the late 90's they were doing the same thing in BTCC and WTCC- the debut year I think the S4 won almost every single race, then it took them like 2 years to even out the playing field
why do you think there are no AWD road racing cars now?
BrnoutJerzey 1 year ago
@AnssiMarkkanen "Unfair" has a different meaning in the USA.
Unfair = Outsmart
So since they couldn't beat the smart Audi guys, they had to change the rules to "remove" them from the "competition" again.

Great clip. I was at the Miami race. Those cars looked great, sounded great and just seemed to be able to take lines that none of the other cars could.

DerFahrer5000 6 months ago 2
@DerFahrer5000 You saw Alesi in an F40?! Lucky bastard, I'd have paid good money to see him racing Ferrari's most beautiful car. I have seen him driving in a European sports car race and he was just as quick as in F1.

@Nasum6 VW and Opel make excellent race-cars if you ask me, maybe not as fast as a 800hp Audi 90 but still very good race-cars, just take a look at the Berg Cup

is the IMSA GTO still around?
PELLAPELLA 3 years ago
IMSA GTO was a series that ran with the GTPs.
GTO cars were Grand Touring type cars with an engine of 2.5 L displacement or more.

Yes in Ingolstadt/Germany in the Audi Museum and once a year they make a Show on the Parking Lot with it

Space Age Telemetry! W00t!

The AUDI 90 IMSA is one the meanest looking and sounding competition cars of all time!
superfast30 4 years ago
"space age telemetry system" ahah hilarious
MustangAficionado 4 years ago
Ah yes... hilarious - because Ford and their Mustang still have troubles with their communications? - Let alone a system that monitors exhaust temp of each cylinder, intake pressures, AFR, MAF + more to 2+ decimals accurately and adjust accordingly. Hilarious because these were achievable by Audi almost 20 years ago when Mustang was still struggling to build a car with a set of nuts that could pass emissions? Well, let's both pretend you were laughing at the other cars - like the rest of us.. =D

At 7:20, the Audi 90 is outrunning a Ferrari F40. **giggles**
bikerbob951 4 years ago
but why not, this Audi 90 had nothing in common with the production car, only the name.
sharpanator 4 years ago
No, not entirely. The drivetrain remained nearly unchanged, the body has minimal modifications (its still a four-door) and it is the same 5-cyl engine found in the street version, albeit modified.
bikerbob951 4 years ago
but 4 door sedans are nothing special in european touring car history. In the DTM there are sedans ever since. For americans it may look strange but touring cars in europe are always 4 door sedans like Mercedes C-class,BMW 3 series,Alfa 156.
sharpanator 4 years ago
The IMSA Audi 90 has not much in common with the stock Audi 90. The transmission is different, the engine heavily modified (maybe the block is the same - nothing else. The body is completely different! It actually had a tube frame with a Audi 90 "shell".
buggable 3 years ago 2
IMSA was not the first "silhouette" formula. I agree with you though. This was a purpose built race-car. Totally within the rules of the day though. In more stock formulas, the Audi A4's were eventually banned (in quattro form anyway). Audi seems to have a habit of crushing race oppositions one way or the other - even going back to Auto Union days...
dyerasyd 3 years ago 5
True, but this is the case today as well. The GTO class, in which Audi 90 GTO competed in, is today the GT1 class from ALMS. In GT1 only the engine block is kept. Transmission, most of the chassis and the aero package are completely different from stock.
