  • I really feel like the ending was 7/8......

  • is this available commercially ? Anyone ?

  • Reminds me of the underground Mario levels, lol

  • have some 12/8 in there aswell.

  • ich hab den beat schon in " Bottom of your soul " genial gefunden... macht lila laune

  • @bolie08 I thought the same thing, man!

  • 1-2-3, 1-2-3. Isn't this more 3/4?

  • @mikper7 It starts out with a 3/4 feel, but it's definitely 6/8 for most of the song.

  • The solitary moron that disliked this is a fucking idiot, who knows absolutely nothing about drumming.

  • @misanthropingthewind ...Or Simon being hypercritical of his own phenomenal playing.

  • nuss very nice

  • a rhythm 's scientist

  • Simon I know nothing about beats per bar but i've seen you & Louie Bellson in

concert together it was great. And i've seen Louie buy himself & he gets two

sticks in each hand & did great for an oldie.

course he had not as many drums as you. I thank GOD that you got to drum with him before he passed.

P.S He buried not more than two city blocks from me. P.P.S. KEEP THE GOOT WORK!!!

  • Simon ! Yeah, still gettin' it done !

  • No doubt about it..It's 6/8 123456-123456-123456

  • @tamaman65 have you studied music?, if you say, 6/8 ,,, you say 2 bars of 123 456 / 123 456, and he´s doing 123 456 789 101112, like playing truplets in hi hat when you are playing 4/4, if that what you are saying it´s true, "hold the line" it´s in 6/8, and it is NOT

  • @lobituso Please don't get me wrong. What time signature is this then? Because I am counting a steady 6 beats per measure or bar. Here again please don't take offence. I would really like to know. I have been playing for many years, but I have not had formal training.

  • 0:50 it seems 12/8 for me, but it is just a opinion

  • @lobituso he overides the 6/8 signature sometimes

  • @MrSchizos yes, maybe, it could be so

  • Oops, my bad. It's nearer 1:20 and its a group of 3 double strokes. Didn't see his left hand come across the first time ! It just looked like he was rocking his right stick on the rim.

  • This is from 1991. Notice Simon's subtle use of a one handed gravity blast buzz roll at 1:22, while keeping the shuffle ostinato going with his left hand. Short , sharp, perfectly placed. This is truely masterful use of a technique that many overuse to an extent which just wears out the listener.

  • @Allplussomeminus that s what I counted also 1-2-3-4-5-6

  • Absolutley amazing best drummer in the world no doubt about it HE'S AWESOME!!!

  • 123456-123456-123456-123456

  • I still think Jeff was better, just my opinion. For Toto, that is.

  • the great thing about 6/8, or 12/8 for that matter, is that you can subdivide it so many different ways. you can feel it in 2, 3, 4, 6, or 12... so the comment about it being a half-time shuffle isn't wrong, it's just one way of interpreting it.

  • Can you count 6/8 as 3/4? It's the same thing right? Or does it matter? HELP MEE!!!

  • @emiel4sma yes, you can count it as 3/4 usually there isn´t a problem if you count like this

you just have to concentrate on the bars.

  • @emiel4sma

think of the bar as in half, so a 7/8 would be 1,2,3, and 1,2,3 and, etc.

  • The first 38 seconds are impossible :'(

  • I love how this is the only "normal" time signature out of his videos and its sounds like something not in 6/8. If you dont count

  • @yoshihisa75

man? i thought it was a metronome!!! i'm not a drummer but it sounds like he's right on time most, if not all, of the time. growing up w/a brother that played drums, i remember he said that 'listening' is the most important thing. what i dig about these series of lessons is he gets a groove going that i can lock into, then he works on the style points with all the little things he does around that basic beat. If all he did was the crazy stuff, he'd lose me pretty early on.

  • I think what's confusing people here is the particular phrasing of this 6/8 tune and its similarities to the triplet feel half shuffle.

Personally, id write this in 3/4 or 3/8 as 6/8 is a compound time sig. and theres a good few groupings of 2 here.

Lastly, i think we should find something else to discuss here, like perhaps the great, tasteful drumming?

Seems like people are posting just to correct the guy who put up the video who probably just wanted to share cool music with the public. Grow up

  • Excellent stuff!

  • Is this from the remastered DVD?..

I just bought it, and miss the piano melody in this tune... irritates me! xD I just love this melody theme from "The Goose", and this little piano, actually sounds better than the Soprano sax in my opinion :)

  • There's feeling good, and there's this!

  • He is so technical and precise it's ridicilous... damn fusion...

  • he is fenomenal

  • Superb - lost for words really....

  • nice..REAL nice....

  • i think its easier if you count as 3/4.

  • @jon6132 ... the easiest way to count 6/8 is to just count the dotted quarter notes .... 1 2 1 2 1 2

  • @jon6132 agreed.

  • Questo si che sa suonare °_°

  • ecco come si suona la batteria!

  • Ringo Starr DOES own them all!

  • whaaa??

  • great play along tracks also! Nice job by himself!

  • He's amazing

  • Ringo Star.. Hahahaha... Hey JoeJacari..., Let Ears play with Happy, and leave the drumming to Simon :) Don't care about Ling Ling.. Cute story though

  • BWaaaahahaha

  • one of my all-time fav drummers

  • Drummer ranking is a great bullshit !!!! Evry good drummer has a own style !! Can you play drums, Antiks72 ? I think no !!

  • No I can't but I still know good drummers when I see and hear them.

  • you are so right, you cant compare drummers...

  • @TheDarthnick Exactly! All Drummers are different and are all good in their own ways. Its like comparing Steve Gadd with Simon Phillips - thing is you can't, because they are both different players.

  • @alraune6666 Amen to that

  • Comment removed

  • Ringo Star owns them all.

  • Ringo star don't even know how to play drums

  • @Antiks72 Sorry dude, I love Ringo but he's simply not a hair on this guy's ass lol

  • This is the only vid that I've seen where he crosses over on the hi-hat! I know it's just for effect but I've just never seen him do it before.

  • I am counting 12/8 half time shuffle @ .39 dunno but awesome anyways

  • Then you can't count.

  • 2:59 He hits the underside of the cymbal. Interesting effect.

  • 1. neil peart 2. simon phillips

  • Both are awesome drummers.

  • 1. You're an idiot 2. Just because

  • Simon Phillips plays on the Joe Satriani track 'Banana Mango 2.'

  • the best!

  • @tomsimon92 i don't now if i should give you a thumbs down for this because there is no best drummer and you can't really compare drummers, or a thumbs up because i find him to be way way up there, he just makes music that is a pleasure to listen to

  • Comment removed

  • You idiots, just count it in triplet forum and you'll get it!

  • Name of this song? Album?

  • Si and Joe actually did play together on the Mick Jagger tour back in the late 80s. I know, the music is nothing like this (or any Simon/Joe song) but they did play and it sounded great!

  • Hmmm I think his long time drummer, Jeff Campitelli is a perfect fit already, Satraini is a lot more about solid rock than Simon Phillips.

    Fox.

  • Phillips has done a lot of solid rock in his time - Michael Schenker, Whitesnake, Nazareth, Gary Moore, Judas Priest, The Who, Jeff Beck....

  • i feel soooo goood...

  • wonderfull drumming

  • 2.39 is really a great part...

  • 2:39 is a lovely 'out of leftfield' moment.

  • excellent groove and feeling!

  • Great drummer and a person.... love his work...

  • Hmmm...sure about that? Might want to count it again.

  • @IMARenegade

It _could_ be counted as a triplet feel, as well. He's not THAT wrong.

  • Listen to the hi-hat pattern. That is a 6/8 rhythm. And I am quite sure that Simon knows what he's talking about.

  • The main groove is clearly a shuffle..Which is 6/8 if you count in straight time i guess..but you wouldn't normally refer to it as "6/8" though.

  • i think you're wrong there my friend.

  • Oh so I guess 'Rosanna' is in '6/8 too then pfft

  • thats not relevent...the first 40 seconds is no doubt a shuffle but after that it is clearly 6/8.

  • What!? Other way around you mean? Intro is a straight a head 6/8 groove...main groove is the shuffle.

  • u both have no clue, nothin changes, its a normal 4/4 with played with triplets instead of 8ths. normal shuffle groove all the way.

  • 6/8 is more like...3/4...

  • your right but it easy to see where the 6/8 might fool some. clearly 4/4 triplets

  • it isnt really a shuffle grove it is really just a triplet feel

  • @SpiffaJ ... definitely 6/8 ... this is not a half time shuffle

  • Comment removed

  • @DrummerLee978 Lmao...the main groove is so obviously a shuffle that I'm in disbelief that people could be so stupid as to argue otherwise! Of course it can also be counted in 6 as dotted but so can all shuffles..including rosanna. U tards should really get a clue lol.

  • @SpiffaJ You're really just making yourself look like an idiot, like congratulations cuz your the shit?. Thats what you want right? recognition?..why else would you be draggin this on.so when tama asks you to make your own signature kit and some little kid tries to tell you about your video, then give em hell kid. But until that time.why dont you just watch the veideo and enjoy it.. or dont watch it, cuz no one gives a shit and a half what you think. If im wrong, anyone but you can let me know

  • @DrummerLee978 I've been playing drums for 15 years you wankstain so stop acting like you have a clue and accept reality...THIS IS A SHUFFLE GROOVE (I accept it IS 6/8 but that's if u count it as dotted (1,2 1,2 1,2) However if you listen to any other shuffle groove like Rosanna for instance (which I'm sure you'd agree IS a half time shuffle lol) this dotted 6th count also applies. It's not as if Siphi himself posted this video so why the sudden urge to take what the title says as gospel??

  • Comment removed

  • @SpiffaJ I already gave you your props...You're the shit.. one day i wish to be like you master yoda...But even still... no one gives a shit >_>

  • @DrummerLee978 Thankyou. Sarcasm is the most sincere concession of defeat ;)

  • @SpiffaJ you can count it both ways

  • @SpiffaJ I wouldn't try to say Simon Phillips takes wrong, if I was you xD

  • @SpiffaJ @ 3:00 listen to the pattern on the bass drums, definately 6/8

  • RETURNS??He never left....

  • Of course not...just the name of the DVD it's from. But then again, you probably already know that.

BTW...what do you think of Terry Bozio?

  • Hi mate,bozzio is awesome mate!cheers
