Do you know how many times we've come close to world war three over a flock of geese on a computer screen? Do you know what triggered the last world war? An argument over how many telegraph poles Germany owed its war debt creditors! Telegraph poles! Ha ha ha ha HA! It's all a joke! Everything anybody ever valued or struggled for... it's all a monstrous, demented gag! So why can't you see the funny side? Why aren't you laughing?
My point is, I went crazy. When I saw what a black, awful joke the world was, I went crazy as a coot! I admit it! Why can't you? I mean, you're not unintelligent! You must see the reality of the situation.
Something like that, I bet. Something like that... Something like that happened to me, you know. I... I'm not exactly sure what it was. Sometimes I remember it one way, sometimes another... If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it to be multiple choice! Ha ha ha! But my point is...
You had a bad day once, am I right? I know I am. I can tell. You had a bad day and everything changed. Why else would you dress up as a flying rat? You had a bad day, and it drove you as crazy as everybody else... Only you won't admit it! You have to keep pretending that life makes sense, that there's some point to all this struggling! God you make me want to puke. I mean, what is it with you? What made you what you are? Girlfriend killed by the mob, maybe? Brother carved up by some mugger?
So... I see you received the free ticket I sent you. I'm glad. I did so want you to be here. You see it doesn't matter if you catch me and send me back to the asylum... Gordon's been driven mad. I've proved my point. I've demonstrated there's no difference between me and everyone else! All it takes is one bad day to reduce the sanest man alive to lunacy. That's how far the world is from where I am. Just one bad day.
The sad thing about Heath Ledger's Joker, brilliantly acted btw even tho I don't care much for the film, is that he barely laughed. I think I prefer the comic book/animated series joker. In those he's funnier and crazy and likable all at the same time, plus his look is more comical and i must say I HATE Jack Nickleson's joker look, that was just a little too freaky...
I read this comic when i was 11 and WOW it was quite dark, violent and explicit but it blew me away, my second fave Batman graphic novel after Year One.
The first time i heard this the way that Mark Hamill or someone sounding like mark hamill can only do i was taken back...the Joker is my favorite villian of all time, but more and more little bits of information make me feel that he's much more than the crazy demented Joker that batman tells us he is. He is still a crazy physco, but there is a bit more to him
I heard that Mark Hamill would actually be interested in doing an animated movie version of "The Killing Joke". Of course Arkham City was supposed to be his last performance as the Joker, but I think doing "The Killing Joke" would end his Joker career on a much more poetic note don't you think?
its weird the killing joke is almost more of a batman centered story then joker what the joker is really trying to say is that mentally him and batman are exactly the same there both insane really the joker just embraces his insanity were as bat man pushes it away and develops it in other forms such as his costume at the end when batman and the joker laughed together it just proved there one and the same
@ChocoAssCreme I disagree. I think the ending showed that Joker continues to see them as one and the same (hence his joke about two lunatics escaping an asylum). I think they are on the same wavelength but Batman channeled his misery into something meaningful while joker gave in to it and dedicated himself to destroying that which has meaning to anyone.
@ChocoAssCreme You're correct. If you listen to Alan Moore talk on the subject, the "joke" is that Batman is pretty much as psychotic as The Joker. What's so strange is that while The Killing Joke is one of the most popular Batman stories to date, it's clearly a criticism of Batman and the superhero genre. This is what separates Moore from people like Frank Miller. Moore shows up the problems with antiheroes, while Miller glorifies antiheroes.
@007iloveJesus It depends... the telegraphpole insident is seen by many as the spark that set WO2 off. Aparently France occupied Rurh after Germany failed to deliver telegraphpoles, this was a severe blow to the german already weak economy. Hitler used this poor state of Germany to rise with promises of a better future.
Hitler may have had pure motives about helping Germany out, but his methodes and price to realise this where off the chard wrong...
this is really well done, great Mark Hamill impression. Bonus points for the music and video. I'm gonna have to dust off the old comics boxes and see if I can find Killing Joke again, thank you both!
People alwyas say that batman is overated. This right here proves why his character holds more resonence than most of DC's most developed characters put together. The story around the bat's relationship to his patcy and confidon the Joker is one that still to this day inspires and has fans hoping to see this in the next movie.
If it'd been me, I'd have used a better Heath Ledger laugh at the end of the film.. He did better one's than that in the movie, for example; the one where he does that Threat video and interrogates Brian Douglas for being dressed up as the Dark Knight..
The Joker is really Tom Nook a local shoe sales man at a mid ranging paper suppily company that has a double life due to his girlfriend cheating on him with a paper salesman named Jim Halpert.
Allegedly in the 1950s when the Cold War was starting a flock of Canadian geese showed up on the US missile defense radars and the technicians thought they were Russian bombers and nuclear missiles were nearly launched at Russia in retaliation.
This may or may not have happened. However, there have been other real life, similar situations involving meteors and shit that have nearly caused WW3.
That hit song in the 80's "99 Luftballoons" was about this topic.
When I watched these movies and cartoons as I kid, I always rooted AGAINST Batman and FOR the Joker. And I still do. I love Joker. I don't care if he came to my house and killed my whole family. Fuck it. I STILL love the Joker. I'd rather hang out with the Joker than Batman any day of the week. x-P
you know DC Universe Animated Original Movies should adopte this novel and maked it into an animated film and have Mark Hamill represed the voice of the joker and Kevin Conroy as batman that should be good
I just took the audio from that scene and put under the "audio" category in Windows Movie Maker. You can find it by just typing it into YouTube's search engine.
@pozerpopz eh , 90's Animated Joker was the craziest to me , The Batman's Variotion was good , but not the crazy you'd expect from Joker . You cant just suit up a mad man and claim him as Joker , he'dve been a good char with a changed name though .
