@titanascarThe "Clippers" the name hearkened back to the 19th century clipper ships were the only American passenger aircraft of the time capable of intercontinental travel. To compete with ocean liners, the airline offered first-class seats on such flights, and the style of flight crews became more formal. Instad of being leather-jacketed, silk-scarved airmail pilots, the crews of the Clippers wore naval-style uniforms and adopted a set procession when boarding the aircraft.
@titanascar Juan Tryppe's grandfather was a capitain os clipper class ships (a much faster vessel in such a form that could "clip" sea waves) in the 19th century. This gave Trippe the idea of calling his planes "clippers," and inspired other items in PA, as elmauriplatense mentioned bellow.
I remember my first flight on a Pan Am 747 was in July 1970 from Heathrow to JFK. I can't remember my last one---I believe it was Tokyo to Manila in Jan 1983. I did meet the Fed Bankruptcy Judge Jay Cristol who handled the Pan Am bankruptcy. He told me he structured it so that the name and logo of Pan Am could be used in the future!
@jacktheripoff1888 You are correct about Clipper Victor being destroyed at Tenerife. I thought the first maiden passenger carrying flight from JFK to LHR was on Clipper America on Jan 17th 1970.
Hermosos videos de los jumbooos! sin lugar a dudas el avion mas hermoso y "grandioso" del mundo..... porque a veces lo grande no es en las dimensiones sino en la confiabilidad! ;)
thank u i can remember my 1st time i saw a PAN Am 747 in 1970 i was helping my dad work on a snackbar at a drivein the city i lived in the aiport departure was over the drivein whin we gaught there a united B-727,a TWA 707 was in the training cerkit it was on a lunch brake win all of a sudden my dad and i herd a differant sound i no what a 707 ,727 sounds like but this was differant there it was a PanAm 747 IT WAS HUGE it made a left turn and made 7 T and Gs it was pilot training thanks
I noticed you included the some of the 747 SPs in this. I flew Clipper Mayflower many times as a kid from New York to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia in the early 80's.
Pan American World Airways introduced the 747 to the world. No livery looks as iconic as Pan Am's does on such a majestic airliner as the Boeing 747. Wish Pan Am was still around today to see it's classic logo on the new Boeing 747-8 intercontinental. Thank you for posting this fine collection of flying clippers.
i think you took the PERFECT song for this vid. great choice! :)

The Victor was destroyed at the Tenerife crash in '77, smashed on the runway by another 747 in the worst air disaster to date.

Special question: Clipper Live Yankee approaching Kai Tak at 1:47 - what is that thing below the left wing? Looks like a third engine...
