I have an Archos 9 and it is so slow it is practically unusable. It comes with Windows Starter which doesn't have tablet features and a processor that is simply too slow for anything other than simple web browsing and email.
I bought this to run my own version software, and since I write Pocket PC applications for a living my code is well optimized, and still its too slow. I've since bought a Acer Aspire Revo, coupled with a 7" Mimo LCD display and it walks all over this thing.
that blows, I figured since archos has been making media devices for all this time theyd be able to pack a capable graphics card with a sufficient CPU in this thing.
Sucks since I just ordered an archos 9 a week ago.
Will this thing at least run Thunderbird, let me do internet browsing? maybe simple low resolution photoshop stuff?
So long as your expectations aren't too high, then you should be fine. I use Google Chrome and that runs fine. It plays hi-def movies fine, but struggles with standard def as they aren't hardware accelerated. YouTube and iPlayer are hopeless. Checkout ArchosFans (dot) com, as there is some great information on there. I've upgraded to Ultimate and that gave me true tablet features.
I have an Archos 605, so was hoping for big things from the A9. It isn't a complete distaster by any means, and there is a workaround for most of the downfalls. It's just I expected everything to work out of the box. Battery life is a good 5-6 hours, and the screen is great, so its not all bad news.
Yeah my Archos is taking forever to ship, are you in the US? Because its supposedly not officially released here so I had to buy it from a special retailer online. Have you taken it anywhere? Is everyone that possesses eyesight jealous? rofl, I want one so bad, I will be getting a Mifi and bluetooth headset as well so I can replace my phone almost entirely if possible.
I'm off round to a mates tonight, and will be taking it with me. I'm in the UK where its been on sale since before xmas, only had mine for 3 weeks. I wrote some software to run on it, to play my music collection, but the cover flow runs too slow on this device. Not my fault as its the same with iTunes too. I've not given up hope, and I will eventually post a video of the software on YouTube.
p.s. Adobe are about to release a hardware accelerated version of Flash which may help with YouTube.
@pacomacman if you want to see the real life difference which hardware accelerated Flash makes, check out the video we posted on our channel. Although the video shows a 720p test, the hardware accelerated laptop happily streamed the 1080p IroMan 2 trailer. The hardware acceleration makes a world of difference, as long as your graphics chipset is supported.
@theonbuttonDOTcom Now what you should have done was run the hardware accelerated Flash 10.1 on the Archos 9, and you would have seen a different story. Granted, it's an improvement, but you won't even get 480p to run smooth. Unfortunately the Archos is running 100% CPU whilst video is playing, and no amount of hardware acceleration is going to help. Media player can handle 720p video, but only if it's in the required format, but 1080p is definately not going to work.
@pacomacman Are you running Beta 3 of Flash 10.1 or an earlier beta, as the US15/GMA500 chipset in the Archos 9 only became supported in the late-Feb Beta 3 version?
@theonbuttonDOTcom Yes, I'm running beta 3 which is a definate improvement over previous versions. With beta 3 I can now play YouTube 360p and 480p videos in a window, but not full screen without dropping frames (forget 720p and above). I do see a bigger improvement using BBC's iPlayer though.
You're probably right. Instead I'll buy a Samsung Q1U Premium model with the 1.33 GHz Core Solo and 2 gb of Ram. It's slightly smaller but a Core Solo at 1.33 is said to be roughly as fast as an Atom running at twice the power. It is older and rare, but about the same price. It also has a GMA 950 which is more sufficant than the GMA 500 for graphical needs.
It runs OSX, you just don't recognise because it has a different graphic user interface. What you are saying is, maybe, you would like it to multitask or look alike.
I was hoping it was a better way to do stuff on a mac like imovie or be able to create apps like on my imac just on a nice touch screen but i guess I am wanting abit much lol
