@LuckyParrots Little Avis and I have bonded, yes, and he loves me a lot. It's pretty funny when he sees me pick up my purse and car keys. He has a cow! The lady who gave him to Ted said she wanted him to be a breeder because she was afraid someone would abuse him. Well, Avis loves me and although he can be a pill, he brings me more joy and companionship than the other three parrots, including Frostie.

My Sun Conure has the same laugh!

But my Phoenix is incredibly posessive of me and, whenever anyone comes to my door he takes on the persona of a psycho killing machine intent on doing whatever it takes to the person on the other side of the door. It's great when sales people come to the door, not so great when my family visit, because he has to be locked away.

Do you know of anything I can do to teach him to be sociable with other people? Or will he always be a one girl bird?

@verticalsmurf The best way to get your bird to be sociable with another person is to put it on the floor then leave the room. The person who wishes to interact with the bird can then squat down and offer a finger which it will most likely crawl up onto.

If it's wings are clipped, this may not work as it may just fly away.

This is the best way I know for a stranger to pick up a bird because they are taller - dominant.

@OnePickieChickie - I got Phoenix from friends who couldn't keep him. They had a baby, Phoenix was jealous and would scream whenever he saw the baby.

I've put Phoenix on the floor but he has no fear! He attacks the feet and ankles of anyone who comes in the house.

The only way I got him to be friendly with anyone was when I left him with my Mum for two weeks when I went away. After a week, Mum said he was a happy, snuggly bird, but when I got home, he immediately turned on my Mum.

@verticalsmurf HE is the key word. Phoenix has bonded with you and considers you to be his mate. Avis and Frostie are both males and attack people as well. Frostie has jumped on people and bit them and will chase them around and jump on them or latch onto their foot or shoe. Avis waddles after people then attacks also.

Gracie and Corkie are both females and do not do that. It must be a male thing!

In your absence, Phoenix bonded with your mother and accepted her as his new mate.

@OnePickieChickie - Phoenix is definately a male. He constantly tries to feed me and show his affection in ways I'd prefer he didn't.

I've thought about getting him girlfriend, but then I'd loose my snuggle-bug, and if they bred, I couldn't give their babies up without putting a new owner through an application process similar to that of signing up for military service!

I've hand reard baby budgies for sale, but they are easier to hand over. Budgies click with almost anyone, Conures bond.

@proviewsg Isn't Avis hilarious! He bit one of my friends hard and the next time they came over, the friend said, "That bird better not bite me again!", and Avis started laughing his head off before he even finished the sentence!

Another time, he was headed up that same guy's sleeve ready to bite him again and when I grabbed him around his body, which usually makes him SCREAM, he started laughing his head off! Lol!

They say parrots are as smart as a four-year-old child and Avis was laughing!

I have four parrots, three of whom laugh. When all three get going, and something is really funny, it makes it even funnier. A friend, who NEVER, EVER laughs because of having a tragic childhood, and I laughed to tears one day. She kept saying, "It's not really funny!", with a big frown on her face. Well, that soon changed ............. And she was bent over laughing and laughing. It was such a good site to see and hear.

Frostie doesn't laugh but Avis, Corkie and Gracie, all featured on my channel, all do. Avis laughs the most though. He bit a friends ear GOOD, I mean it was BAD. The next day, my friend said, "You'd better not bite me again!" Before he was done with his sentence, Avis started laughing at him like crazy! Another time, Avis starting sneaking up the same friends arm headed for his ear to bite him again. I grabbed him just in time and as I grabbed him, he started laughing hysterically!

Isn't that funny how that works? A woman who used to come into Birds of Paradise to care for the birds has had a really tough life and never laughs. I was reading her a newspaper article which I thought was amazing and disgusting and she thought it was nothing she was interested. I began to laugh at her expression then Corkie and Gracie started laughing. The four of us laughed ourselves silly until I had tears running down my face and the somber woman was bent over holding her stomach! Lol!

Avis is hysterically funny. He hates everyone but me and if anyone comes around, he gets all puffed up and grabs hold of a yarn puff ball I made that's attached to his cage which he violently yanks on. He's bitten five people so far and BADLY. Everyone thinks he's so cute and want to play with him. Not anymore! Lolol! Every time my friends come in the house, he climbs down off his cage and waddles over to me all puffed up. You should see him attack the squirt bottle. See Dances With Spoons.

This doesn't surprise me: not talking or laughing. The only conure who really talks is the Blue Crown Conure. Check out his video "Blue Crown Conure Talking". Avis has the sweetest little voice.

You might be able to get your conure to dance to Frostie's dance video called "God Is Great". Avis just loves that song. Try putting your bird on your finger and moving it gently up and down with the beat of the music.

Avis laughs at people even if nobody laughs! He crawled onto a friends shoulder all puffed up and was going to bite him again. I grabbed him and instead of screeching like he usually does, he started laughing! I was holding him with my hand around him and he just laughed and laughed! When my friend told him, the day after Avis bit him, "You'd better not bite me again!", Avis started laughing at him!

Haha, I know.. But 'When it's your own' I guess lol .. I had two lovebirds at my parents house when I was growing up, but I now live in an apartment and don't have the time to properly care for any pets. When I have a house and kids of my own, I will build a room for pets and have perches all over the house so birds can fly where they please. Seriously, bird poop doesn't bother me at all. Dog/cat poop on the other hand kinda really sucks.

I was laughing in a pet store ones with this Makaw (sp?) it was so funny.

This kid kept making it say hello and it got upset after saying 20 hellos it yelled at the kid. I laughed, then the parrot laughed and we both stood there laughing. The parrot and I. I have a Sun Conure, I know that they mimick our laughter, but IMO Conures seem to do it more convincingly and more contaigously than other birds, they seem to know how to start with a chuckle, then build up to a full belly laugh. The only bird who I have ever known to do it better, was my Quaker Charlie, but he flew away last year. I adore my Sun, but I miss my Charlie.

Ooh, I hate that look, my Sun Conure, Phoenix, will be all lovie dovie with me one minute, then he fluffs up, stalks and attacks my feet. Unfortuately, Phoenix doesn't laugh when I try to dissuade him, he just gets nippy. My best defence is to hide my feet at all times, that way Phoenix just keeps being my snuggle bug.

Avis kept laughing and laughing so I set up the camera! I just reconnected with 40 old friends from high school and elementary school on facebook and they are all stunned because my hair was dark brown back then!

It is! He's funny! When he sees me eating something, he says, "Give! Give! Give! Give!", then proceeds to make a very loud, overly exaggerated lip smacking sound folled by loud a loud, drawn out, "mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm", which he repeats over and over! I'll have to get it on video!
