@Tieball It depends on teh rock. SInce I flatened teh bottom of the rock it sat very securely in the pot. However if needed you could even add some silicon caulking to hold it in place.

It is fascinating how such a small tree can be soo difficult to take care of. I personally like to buy a bonsai.. but .. most of the shops which specialize on bonsai offer bonsai-courses as well, which evokes the impression that without a basic course one is not able to look properly after the tree.. true or false? i mean.. i'm fine with reading stuff about it but do i really have to spend a 4 day course?
@Saphir8 There is a lot to creating and caring for a bonsai. It is both art and horticulture. You may not need a four day course if you only want to care for the tree but you will need some grainy to know what to do
its not coral.. it looks like figi rock or some sort of live rock at one time and now its dead rock.. commonly used in marine aquariums.. i'm into that stuff as you can see form my vids. .. super cool vid BTW
@Mayleos Th etree is doing well. I have cut it back and it is starting to recover from all the activity now with new growth. I'll do a follow up video to this one in a while once the tree has filled in and the rootsare starting to adhear to the rock
@soxnes I'm glad you like teh way the tree turned out. I'm pretty excited about it too. It looks so much better already. This weekend I plan to wire the tree out and style it to complete the tree. I'm already seeing new growth on the tree and it looks very happy. I'll certainly do an update but I don't think we will have to wait a year. It should be looking pretty good in about a month. I also do blog posts based upon these videos so check them out at orlandobonsai com Talk to you soon
@OrlandoBonsaiTV alright Great!!! I can't Wait I just love bonsai's they are just amazing I love Roots over rocks more so awsome I will keep checking up on your videos Thank You!!!
@liveoakmerlin That's a great idea. I know that method is used for helping grafts take better, and it certainly would promote the aerial roots to grow. Right now I have the rock, aerial roots, and normal roots watered twice a day so I'll see how it goes this week. If the tree is struggling next week I'll add the sphagnum and wrap to increase the humidity. I'll try to post next week to give an update. Thanks!
@liveoakmerlin it is has been so hot and dry in Florida so I am going to use the spagnum and wrap after all. I think during our rainy seasn when it is very humid I wouldn't need to, but this time of the year it's just going to help it develop faster. Thansk for the suggestion, it is much appreciated!
I've read in a book and in other internet sources that a root over rock bonsai is accomplished by wrapping the roots over the rock like you have done and then burying the rock in a larger bonsai pot/flower pot for a growing season/a matter of months in order to get the roots to acclimate easier than being shocked by the sudden presence of air. I'd like to a see a follow up of this tree to see your method vs. the one I've read about.
@kissiebooashes I am familiar with the method you are talking about. However I didn't need to do that with this type of material. The material I used was a ficus and also I was able to get roots from the base of the tree into the soil so it will continue to grow. However this tree puts out a ton of aerial roots which means roots will drop down from the trunk and branches and when they hit the soil they will get very think and in time will totally surround this rock. Keep watching & thanks
its called live rock its used in marine tanks its not alive but would be in time if placed in a tank
platsy06969 4 days ago
@platsy06969 I used to do salt water tanks and am famlar with live rock. I agree that is most likely the same type of material as this rock

you should cover the rock in spagnum moss and then seran wrap it . the roots will develop much quicker and make that tree a little healthier
