  • An incredible encounter, you must be very happy to have gotten so close to a Gray Whale

  • wow!!! what an awesome experience. Great job on the video.

  • ''once in a lifetime experience'' Thank for sharing :D

  • WOW!!!! Such an amazing video I go diving there quite a bit and have never seen anythign that spectacular. What an amazing shot!!!

  • Awesome and amazing footage! Love it! That would have been so cool to see with my little divers too!!

  • So cool!! You were the luckiest people in Laguna that day...this year...or even the luckiest ever! I loved seeing how maneuverable the whale was. I have forwarded your link to my friend who is head of the Save the Whales organization which she created as a teenager back in the 70s.

  • We dive there and at Woods all the time. Never have we been so lucky as to see a whale. What a great experience for you guys.

  • Good for you guys being in the right place at the right time. As a fellow scuba diver I can imagine the excitement this caused for you and how you'll be talking about it for years.

  • Really unique footage--amazing how graceful they are. Thanks for sharing this great moment with us! I just can't imagine the feeling.

  • I'm friends with Kris and boy oh boy was he just ecstatic when he told me. Amazing. definitely something you will never forget.

  • Fantastic!

  • Curious -- could you feel the water moving from him swimming around you? So amazing!

  • @lildevil8411 Not really haha there was some surge plus we were all in so much shock I'm sure we wouldn't even notice if a seal nipped up!

  • That is fantastic! Used to dive at Shaw's and Boat's all the time. I've never seen anything like this.

  • a-mazing. I'm so jealous.

  • Wow! What a moment right here in the OC!!! I've seen Porpoises go by in the distance at the end of the Crescent Beach reef, but never a Grey Whale.

  • @vv55sst You mean bottlenose dolphins? We only have one species of porpoise down in SoCal (Dall's porpoise), and they're normally far offshore.

  • We swim there all the time in the morning. Random diver bubbles are startling a whale would be pretty awesome. Saw a big mola mola a couple weeks ago!

  • Damn! Many great days at that spot but nothing like that! I shoulda been there!

  • Wow!

  • Thank's for sharing, you are so lucky! Good light, nice viz, and an amazing encounter, agree with Kurt Lieber, 51 great seconds, and all at Shaw's Cove ! Nice ! The video looks great, no need for any editing.

  • Awesome encounter!

  • So Rad! Congrats!!

  • WOW!!!! What a great experience that must have been. Great job with the camera.

  • was that the actual sound too?? or added on for effect?? either way, amazing moment there.

  • @bobsir the crackle noise is just background noise that is always in the water, The bubbly noise... those are my bubbles haha This video was straight from my GoPro, no editing at all. :)

  • @RIPproductions9 - the "crackling" noise is caused by crustaceans in the water. Diving in So. Cal. you hear it pretty much all the time.

  • @vv55sst ah that makes sense! Ya I hear it all the time, normally I figure its just fish munching on the algae on rocks.

  • That is so cool thanks for sharing.

    kt

  • Wow amazing we sent this into the news for ya!

  • Spectacular and unbelievable! Loved the u-turn back to the camera – I think he knew he was being recorded and wanted to show off for his YouTube debut.

  • Wow! Amazing! Great photography too.

  • Incredible! That fact that you were able to hold the camera still is amazing. Great work.

  • That really is once in a lifetime experience.

  • Amazing encounter - congrats and thanks!

  • Awesome!

  • Amazing encounter! Thanks for posting. So cool!

  • Beautiful!

  • That was a dive encounter of a lifetime. I have over 1,500 dives in So Cal and have NEVER seen a whale while diving. That 51 second interaction will live within you for the rest of your life. Congrats! And thanks for sharing.

    Kurt Lieber

  • Fantastic!

  • Wow! That was amazing!

  • Rebecca: nice work with the Go Pro--you rock! I wonder if the little guy had gotten separated from his mom/the pod?

    Mike

  • @scubapro25 I hope it didn't get separated! Maybe it was the curious kid that came in to look at the funny bubble making creatures!

  • @scubapro25 It didn't get separated from its mom or any pod. Juveniles tend to do their own thing during the southbound migration. Probably just doing a little exploring.

  • SO glad you had your camera - thanks for sharing!

  • That's a once in a lifetime encounter!

  • Wow! Who over rolled over on their back was pretty excited, just like I would have done. What a once in a life time opportunity.

  • THAT IS AWESOME! I dove Shaw's so many times and NEVER saw anything like that!! WOW!

  • Wow- what an incredible experience you had. Wondering where you were in Shaw's Cove and how deep it was? Thanks for sharing this amazing video.

  • @sleed23 We were about half way between the crevice and turn around rock. So that would be about 35ft down? We were too excited to check exact details haha

  • @RIPproductions9 Thanks- I was going to go for a swim/snorkel that day at Shaw's but we wimped out because some clouds rolled in and the air was kind of chilly. Bet we could have seen it from the surface because the visibility was so good? Glad you were there to see it and got this great video.

  • @LagunaBluebelt For sure! It was inbetween turn around rock and the crevice (if you know those two underwater marks) Bout 35ft of water... could definitely see from surface!

  • That is soo cool!

  • That is sicky gnar gnar man!!
