So cool!! You were the luckiest people in Laguna that day...this year...or even the luckiest ever! I loved seeing how maneuverable the whale was. I have forwarded your link to my friend who is head of the Save the Whales organization which she created as a teenager back in the 70s.
Good for you guys being in the right place at the right time. As a fellow scuba diver I can imagine the excitement this caused for you and how you'll be talking about it for years.
We swim there all the time in the morning. Random diver bubbles are startling a whale would be pretty awesome. Saw a big mola mola a couple weeks ago!
Thank's for sharing, you are so lucky! Good light, nice viz, and an amazing encounter, agree with Kurt Lieber, 51 great seconds, and all at Shaw's Cove ! Nice ! The video looks great, no need for any editing.
@bobsir the crackle noise is just background noise that is always in the water, The bubbly noise... those are my bubbles haha This video was straight from my GoPro, no editing at all. :)
Spectacular and unbelievable! Loved the u-turn back to the camera – I think he knew he was being recorded and wanted to show off for his YouTube debut.
That was a dive encounter of a lifetime. I have over 1,500 dives in So Cal and have NEVER seen a whale while diving. That 51 second interaction will live within you for the rest of your life. Congrats! And thanks for sharing.
@scubapro25 It didn't get separated from its mom or any pod. Juveniles tend to do their own thing during the southbound migration. Probably just doing a little exploring.
@sleed23 We were about half way between the crevice and turn around rock. So that would be about 35ft down? We were too excited to check exact details haha
@RIPproductions9 Thanks- I was going to go for a swim/snorkel that day at Shaw's but we wimped out because some clouds rolled in and the air was kind of chilly. Bet we could have seen it from the surface because the visibility was so good? Glad you were there to see it and got this great video.
@LagunaBluebelt For sure! It was inbetween turn around rock and the crevice (if you know those two underwater marks) Bout 35ft of water... could definitely see from surface!
An incredible encounter, you must be very happy to have gotten so close to a Gray Whale

@lildevil8411 Not really haha there was some surge plus we were all in so much shock I'm sure we wouldn't even notice if a seal nipped up!

That is fantastic! Used to dive at Shaw's and Boat's all the time. I've never seen anything like this.

Wow! What a moment right here in the OC!!! I've seen Porpoises go by in the distance at the end of the Crescent Beach reef, but never a Grey Whale.
vv55sst 2 months ago
@vv55sst You mean bottlenose dolphins? We only have one species of porpoise down in SoCal (Dall's porpoise), and they're normally far offshore.

@RIPproductions9 - the "crackling" noise is caused by crustaceans in the water. Diving in So. Cal. you hear it pretty much all the time.
vv55sst 2 months ago
@vv55sst ah that makes sense! Ya I hear it all the time, normally I figure its just fish munching on the algae on rocks.
