@Godshound Very good film, but I do think it fell into the "Native Americans are perfect" category. Costner's character was never really conflicted about what side he was on or should be on. The Native Americans were good and the US Army bad with none of the grayness that exists in real life. The film would have been much better if you were able to identify with both sides and in the end wonder whether or not Costner's character made the right choice.

I've never quite got why the media loves depicting Native American's as wild killers. Anyone who even knows a bit of America's history prior to colonization should know how awesome their culture and history is. I like westerns as much as the next guy, but essentially everyone shows this depiction. It gets old easily.
it really depends on the distinct Tribe of the Native Americans. Some Native American Tribes fought each other for generations in some of the most brutal, bloody and vengeful warfare human beings are capable of. Indian tribes were amongst the most savage of all native peoples. Their practices extended to the depths of canabalism and mutilation of prisoners and captives. Women were treated as little more than chattel (of less value than a horse) and violence in war and hunting was seen as the highest masculine value (they had no written culture to speak of). Americans who settled the West were not anthropologists but many of their folksy observations were actually spot on.

@Godshound Very good film, but I do think it fell into the "Native Americans are perfect" category. Costner's character was never really conflicted about what side he was on or should be on. The Native Americans were good and the US Army bad with none of the grayness that exists in real life. The film would have been much better if you were able to identify with both sides and in the end wonder whether or not Costner's character made the right choice.

it really depends on the distinct Tribe of the Native Americans. Some Native American Tribes fought each other for generations in some of the most brutal, bloody and vengeful warfare human beings are capable of. Other Tribes, notably the Comanche, were some of the most brutally savage warriors who raped, kidnapped, tortured, executed, pillaged and lied to pretty much everyone. Some tribes on the other hand, were peaceful. At the same time, the European armies were also guilty of war crimes.

The Aztecs, the Incas, the Mayans and the Pawnee hardly constitute the entirety of American Indians. Even then only the first of those listed carried out in any grand scale narrowing it down to one group amid what... 500+ groups? Whereas human sacrifice was common among the Celts and Germanic people (bog victims, anyone?) What of the Rus sacrificing a maiden when an important chief died? The oldest skulls may have exhibited dolichocephalism but was not found to even be Caucasian.

The guy from bury my heart at wounded knee is in it. Another cool mivie is the only good indian. Those two movies showed natives in a different way

Some of the movies portrayed here aren't racist. I agree with the over all point of the video post. But many films hollywood made also glorified the Indian made him tough, cool, romantic and drew great interests into are culture. John Ford and John Wayne movies had a hand in that.

Natives have been here for at least 60,000 years and the date keeps getting earlier....and anyone with half a brain and has no special interest knows that when you have a passage such as the Bering Strait theory, it is a two-way street..people going both ways. The coastline of All of the Americas are vast and has had many people passing throughout the ages and the glaciers were a clearer of all records in the areas that alot of people have lived and hunted.

im part native american (sadly mostly white) and im proud of it but sometimes my friends tease me about it, the other the day 2 of my friends chased me after school and said "get the indian boy", sometimes i wonder y i call them friends, one kid even asked me "are you mexican?" and i said "no im indian" and hes like "o you look mexican", and ive been teased bc i wore a bone necklace/choker to school and ppl laughed at me and looked at me weird, i dont like it at all :(
