Don Cherry is a buffoon, largely intentionally so for entertainment purposes, and has, by far, done more to harm the game of hockey than anyone ever has. It is a tragedy that CIBC has given him a voice, and a greater tragedy that anyone takes him seriously.
If anything, what he said about Stevens being an admirable player was far more problematic than what he said about the critics of fighting. Where's the controversy? Those guys are hypocrites and they are a bunch of pukes.

Cherry is wrong. You won't continue to see this. The players just have to get use to the new rules and the new game. Player safety is more important. Once the players get use to the new style, you'll see the hitting pick up (Even though I think it's fine right now. Still a lot of hits in the game).. I watched the Lightning/Caps game this week and there was a crazy amount of hitting. With no illegal hits, no injuries. NHL isn't getting rid if hitting, that's what the NFL is doing.

What Don doesnt realize is that getting your bell rung as it was referred to in the old days COULD have severe ramifications and they are now being realized...sure some guys lead a normal life...however some do not.
The reason this happened is because everybody thinks Cherry is the king of hockey and everything he says is right. If McLean wasn't such a bitch he would of interrupted him and done the final remarks. I don't play hockey but you can see from the years that the players have gotten bigger and faster and Cherry doesn't realize that because he doesn't play. But he's right saying that when you hit someone your instinct is to look back and you can see that you've hit his head with your peripheral.
So many things to consider when in a position like Shannahan. Cherry is often right on a lot of things & has strong opinions. If the players could govern themselves, there would be less serious injuries in my opinion. Those players that were known for cheap shots or dirty play would be cut so fast because they would have zero respect from other players. There are more fights in the pre season than anything, because guys are trying to make teams. If there were no enforcers, it would be open season on the smaller, skilled players. It would take away from the game because the stars people pay to watch would all be injured. You have to look back and see where and how fighting evolved in the NHL. This league originally had 6 teams and then expanded in to more. With 6 or so teams, you are going to be playing against the same players quite often. That can build some bad

@canadianguy0987 I believe the NHL has done a great job modernizing the game, making hits to the head illegal, cutting down on the clutching and grabbing, changing the size of goalie equipment. The NBA is a whole different game in the sense players are trying to be penalized to get to the foul line. Flopping is more of a problem than anything right now in the NBA game.

@Noles506 Helmet to helmet hits in football are not permitted and if you do it you are suspended. Also I am a big UFC fan, and injuries to the head are more serious in hockey than in MMA. The difference exactly resides in the fact that hockey is a faster sports than the others, and because there is more people in hockey you will not always see the hits coming when in the UFC you are always facing the opponents.

In MMA the guys are face to face and when they throw an elbow it is from a stable position and in the face of the guy, hits behind the head are not allowed because they are too dangerous. In NHL they go at a crazy speed and can hit behind or beside the head where it is the most dangerous

NHL needs to standardize their suspensions. Judgment shouldn't be based solely on the severity of the injury but more so the manner in which the injury was received.
Headshots are a hot button topic in football and in hockey. Do you think the NHL enjoy's having there most marketable player missing half of a season, and the start of the next season? Something has to be done about blatant hits to the head. And, it is a tough call on the legality of each particular hit because of the speed of the game. Don Cherry know's the game but has an over the top way of stating his opinion. Brendan Shannahan has a very difficult job.

Cherry is wrong. You won't continue to see this. The players just have to get use to the new rules and the new game. Player safety is more important. Once the players get use to the new style, you'll see the hitting pick up (Even though I think it's fine right now. Still a lot of hits in the game).. I watched the Lightning/Caps game this week and there was a crazy amount of hitting. With no illegal hits, no injuries. NHL isn't getting rid if hitting, that's what the NFL is doing.

I don't play hockey but you can see from the years that the players have gotten bigger and faster and Cherry doesn't realize that because he doesn't play. If the players could govern themselves, there would be less serious injuries in my opinion. If there were no enforcers, it would be open season on the smaller, skilled players. It would take away from the game because the stars people pay to watch would all be injured. But that's just it, watermelonpictures, fighting is NOT a part of hockey. That's why the fighters are each given a 5 minute major penalty. In boxing, fighting is allowed, which is why they are awarded points for landing blows to the face and body.
You have to look back and see where and how fighting evolved in the NHL. This league originally had 6 teams and then expanded in to more. With 6 or so teams, you are going to be playing against the same players quite often. That can build some bad

I don't want hockey to change anymore than it already has. It's a physical, contact filled sport, on par with boxing, football, rugby. No one wants to see anyone get hurt, not even the guys throwing the hits or the punches, but it's a part of hockey history.

The NBA is a whole different game in the sense players are trying to be penalized to get to the foul line. Flopping is more of a problem than anything right now in the NBA game.

Then he speaks of the Pacioretty saga and telling kids directly that the mistake was the little push. @Noles506 Helmet to helmet hits in football are not permitted and if you do it you are suspended. Also I am a big UFC fan, and injuries to the head are more serious in hockey than in MMA. The difference exactly resides in the fact that hockey is a faster sports than the others, and because there is more people in hockey you will not always see the hits coming when in the UFC you are always facing the opponents.

Lesson # 2: It's been several years I'm saying that hits to the head should be banned... and by the way when I first saw Stevens hit on Kariya when it happened I found it disgusting, It should have been illegal back then and it should be today. Lesson # 3 Hitting the head should not be called "finishing the hit" it's a cheap shot, hit the body.

i noticed when stevens with the stars players nobody on the other team went bonkers and started brawling. seems like these after a good clean hit everyone jumps in. hit a rookie theres 4 guys after you. and there facewashing after every whistle. watch the games back in the day. then you will know what the problem is.

If you took a run at a star player, the other team got to you, not your teams designated tough guy. You had to pay the piper. BTW - there were many players over 200 lbs in that era.

There is no place in hockey for hypocrites like Don Cherry.Don is the same one who advocates no touch icing because it would limit injuries, but then he turns around and shows superstars having career ending injuries because of hits to the head. That is absurd. I like rough play as much as the rest of hockey fans, but i'm more interested in seeing Sidney Crosby or Ovechkin score a nice goal than watch two thugs have a staged fight. Any true hockey fan watches it for the skill.

The one on Kariya is particularly awful, the puck is miles away, Kariya is not looking down, he is looking forward were the play is, and Stevens comes and give him an elbow in the face. Stevens was targeting the head like crazy and it sould not be allowed. You are putting your fun watching the game before the health of the players that is what Cherry is doing too. Why should you be ok with hits to the head?

BTW Paul Kariya's career was shortened by many years due to concussions. NHL needs to standardize their suspensions. Judgment shouldn't be based solely on the severity of the injury but more so the manner in which the injury was received.

Headshots are a hot button topic in football and in hockey. Do you think the NHL enjoy's having there most marketable player missing half of a season, and the start of the next season? Something has to be done about blatant hits to the head. And, it is a tough call on the legality of each particular hit because of the speed of the game. Don Cherry know's the game but has an over the top way of stating his opinion. Brendan Shannahan has a very difficult job.

Fighting is there to self police the players, if not star players would be attacked at every turn. If you have a guy who can fight on your team it is a deterrent to other players.
