"Each Chevy Volt (has) $250,000 in state and federal dollars in incentives - $3 billion altogether...total state and federal assistance offered for the development and production of the Chevy Volt...18 government deals that included loans, rebates, grants and tax credits...GM is currently 26% owned by the federal government...According to GM CEO Dan Akerson, the average Volt owner makes $170,000 per year."
---James Hohman, assistant director of fiscal policy, Mackinac Center for Public Policy.
The Volt is an over-priced hybrid. At the current price, It will die a slow death. It cannot compete with the Prius, and even the Nissan Leaf is outselling it....LOL.
@paulfornasier November 2011 Volt sales at 1,108 units. Leaf - 672. Volt sales ramp up as vailability increases and people realize that Leaf can only serve as a second car. You can not take it on trips. This is why I would never be able to buy a Leaf. Volt on the other hand, although more expensive, functions as fully electric on commutes, but does not limit range. So you can have it as your only car.
@whotolduso People still complain because the Volt is a crap car. They were supposed to come out with an all electric with great range....and they came out with a plug-in hybrid with an extremely crappy range as an all-electric, and a really crappy price also. Many people really wonder if GM is really attempting in any way, shape, or form to promote the use of electricity to power cars.. They bought out the best battery company in the US....and ended up using an LG battery...????
@paulfornasier you dont understand the advantage of having a range extender? The leaf can only serve you as a second commuter car precisely because it is pure electric. The crappy price is solely because of the battery. By the way the EV1 suffered from exactly the same issues as the volt and every other electric car. So to praise it and then to bash the Volt is hypocritical.
@whotolduso I don't praise the EV-1. The EV-1 is a decade old.....and technology moves a hell of alot in 10 years, and yet it still had much better battery range than the Volt...LOL. That says a hell of alot right there... Every other decent electric vehicle surpasses the Volt in electric range...and some by several multiples.
When I was a kid seventy years ago, they used to argue which was best, the chevy or the ford. Now it is the honda or the toyota with othe foreign cars mixed in. The civic is a great economy car, but the prious is king. Maybe the volt will improve until it challenges the prious, but for now, it is the prious.
@Iambigcougar: You mean 'Prius'. And when you you're discussing from a technology standpoint, the Volt is "king". Toyota doesn't even have electric plug-in technology on the road yet. Not to sound rude, but are you familiar with how the Volt technology works?. The Volt is a game changer, plane and simple... and Toyota knows it, that's why Toyota is rushing to convert the current Prius into plug-in technology as a separate model in its lineup.
@ReSanSax You are right. I would like to see the Prius get more like 100 miles on one electrical charge and then I like quality. They will have to put quality into the vehicle for me to buy. Of course I would like a big tax credit like what was given to former Prious buyers. I will wait and see. I have the money to buy.
@ReSanSax Actualy I did my home work right after I made that stupid comment and i found that toyota and honda just decided to not put in the plug in feature because the gas engine is very reliable and that is what charges the battery. Also i watched who killed the electric car. Very eye opening movie. check it out,
@AutoTechie20711 It's interesting to watch, much like any Michael Moore film, but that movie is pure propaghanda. There was no demand for the EV1 much like there is very little demand for electric cars today when gas prices have more than quadrupled. Notice that people vilify GM for canceling EV1. and now that they have come out with another electric car, people are still complaining.
@whotolduso Explain the "pure propaganda". What makes the movie "pure propaganda"? I really didn't see much at all in that movie that wasn't factual. Yes, they are people who are very supportive of getting away from petroleum powered vehicles...but that, in itself, does not make it propaganda. Explain yourself. I'd like to see what you think was twisted in that movie...to classify it as "propaganda". Please be specific.
@paulfornasier Why propaganda? Because its half truth, speculative and presents only facts that support an already made conclusion. - interviews of people who loved the EV1. no interview of people who were uninterested. No information about other companies' ventures into electric cars (RAV4) and why they didn't take off. An unsubstantiated claim that GM was sabotaging itself with unattractive advertising. The very notion that GM would purposely sandbag an opportunity for huge profits is idiotic.
@whotolduso Also, you are not comparing apples with apples if you compare the Leaf to the Volt. Compare it to the Prius, if anything, or any plug-in hybrid...because that's what it is. If you compare to the Leaf, then let's compare with Tesla models, and see how outclassed the Volt is... Again, as many keep stating, the Volt is not worth the cash you pay. There are too many better options for the money. It's a loser...period!
@paulfornasier The prius? what is electric only range of the Prius? Tesla, Fisker are all very expensive niche market vehicles, so their ranges are better. The volt is the first effort in recent years to deliver an affordable electric car. The leaf and the new mitsubishi too. You are complaining about the price. Can you not see that this was exactly the same situation with the EV1? The fact is NO electric or hybrid makes financial sense right now, including the Prius.
@whotolduso You keep saying the Volt is comparable to the Leaf. It is NOT. It is a plug-in hybrid. The Leaf is an all-electric. If you speak of propaganda, then this comparison is exactly that. It is an effort to turn the public's head to make a comparison that is not valid at all.
@paulfornasier The volt is an electric car, like the leaf. The volt just has the fore site to cure range anxiety. If your at work and the school calls to tell you that your son or daughter just broke their arm and you need to get to the hospital across town you better hope you remembered to charge your leaf. Because if you didn't when you run out of electric power your done. With the volt the gas powered generator will keep the battery charged enough to get there.
@BEANDIP3454 The Volt is sham, as many know. GM sold out the electric vehicle industry and shut it down by taking Ovionic's patent and selling it to Chevron. It essentially forced all automakers to shut down their electric car programs, as they were not allowed to use the large format NiMH batteries any longer. GM could have done much better. The Volt will not compete with all electric once the next leap in technology happens. GM is not trusted at all by the electric industry.
@whotolduso How about the fact that GM was able to buy out the most advanced patents on batteries in the US...and then sold them to Texaco / Chevron. This is now a significant problem for Toyota in it's effort to bring out the new RAV-4 electric. Try that one on for size. Part of that story was actually told in the documentary we are discussing....and it still continues to this day,
@whotolduso The reason that Toyota stopped production directly related to the inability to use the battery any longer. They were forced into a settlement with Chevron /Texaco. This is a clear and unequivocal fact. Toyota is now working with Tesla in regard to it's new version of the RAV-4 electric/plug-in. You seem to be missing some very important facts.....propaganda????
@whotolduso Hey, why don't you compare with the plug-in hybrid produced in China? There will be some plug-in hybrids coming out in North America in the next year also. The Prius has had a kit available for several years now also...to do a switch to plug-in.
@whotolduso Another important fact....Toyota only destroyed a portion of their RAV-4 electrics...and then decided to let owners continue to use them. They have been driven by their owners ever since, and serviced by various Toyota sercice centres. There are many clear facts that separate the actions of GM from other manufacturers. No surprise that GM was a focus in the documentary.... I will be interesting to see what happens to the Volt when it faces REAL competition.
@whotolduso Oh..and the reason the Volt is not compared with the Prius is because the Prius is wallopping all competition, with millions in sales to date. There is no other hybrid to be compared with it. I see them constantly....and I really don't see any other type of hybrid / electric vehicle on any consistent basis. There is currently great success with hybrid production these days...and an all-electric Toyota is just around the corner. The major NA makers are just flailing.
@whotolduso Bizarre for you to state that "NO electric or hyrbrid makes financial sense right now", when Toyota has sold over 3 million of the Prius, and is about to start manufacturing the RAV-4 all-electric in Canada. That is a statement right out of a GM / Chevron propaganda film or something.....LOL. It is one of the largest successes of Toyota these days. The Prius is an incredibly common vehicle...often used by cab drivers....because they make so much financial sense....LOL
@whotolduso The one thing I agree with you about ...is that it did not make sense for Toyota to continue it's production of the initial RAV-4 electric. Yes, it was a program they were forced to introduce due to the California Clean Air Act. BUT...they did not sabotage the industry, as GM did. AND, they also had the intelligence to allow their vehicles to continue to be used.....which has allowed further advances in technology and adaptation.
@whotolduso OH...and why was everyone muzzled when Chevron (after being sold the patents by GM) disallowed anyone to use larger versions of the NiMH battery? Basically, they brought all production of any electric vehicle to a halt, and put a muzzle on all parties involved in the court case. Again....a VERY significant fact that seem to have left out....that had a MAJOR impact on the development of the industry. It set the industry back for many years....and continues to do so.
@whotolduso And about GM 's sabotage.....tell me why you would take all those cars away from people who were willing to buy them, and were making monthly lease payments?????, which were certainly not hurting GM's bottom line...LOL. I say laughingly....who was behind GM throwing away money like that???? The ball's in your court...LOL. You have to be incredibly naive to not have understood the politics in the overturning of the California legislation and the trashing of the EV-1.
@paulfornasier GM and might I add everyone else including Toyota lobbied to repeal the California law because nobody wanted to engage in an electric car program. They knew that to have a usable range, they would never be able to get the battery cost down enough to make economic sense for a person to buy it, or for the company to not lose money. This is still a problem even today, a decade later. GM and Toyota didn't want to use their resources on something they believed would not take off.
@whotolduso Nice bunch of crap you just wrote.... I asked you to be specific about the half-truth or outright propaganda, as you first stated. What was said that clearly wasn't true?? Are you supposed to interview everyone in the world?? and why?? The documentary was about the EV-1...and the surrounding industries...and the events as they unfolded. The documentary had a lot of depth. I think you are more interested in some kind of survey, rather than a documentary...LOL.
@paulfornasier Propaganda is not outright lies, its careful choice of information presented in a way to spin the truth. I said it's interesting to watch.. But if it was truly an investigative effort to cast a well rounded light on the issue, the information I mentioned before would have been included. The RAV1 is important because it was a similar effort by a competitor. So if it's really true that the demand for an expensive impractical electric car was there, why did Toyota cancel it too?
@whotolduso What I got from it was that there were forces from within that didn't let the good happen. It was like GM was working against itself, and of course I'm sure that the petrol fuel companies had alot to do with it. Its a damn sham/shame either way.
Thousands of car accident victims were left behind by the massive government bailouts of GM and Chrysler. The $50 billion rescue of GM and the restructuring of Chrysler allowed them to "wash away legal responsibility for car-accident victims who had won damages or had pending lawsuits," OMG just found out,NO VOLT FOR ME this is just sick.
This car is a piece of garbage. Just look at the comments below and you will see the types of people who actually buy this shitty overpriced tin can. A bunch of brain washed sheeple. 400 lbs of batteries and the pos can only go 25-50 miles on a charge? lol
...yes, and the space program that went to the moon also have problems that had to be solved... I dont see the point of bashing, like if the customer's didnt had any guarantee for the product.
I've driven the Volt... believe me when I tell you the Volt is the real deal. I had it for 2 weeks as an endorsement. The car can haul ass, gets about 38-42 miles per charge, then the gas engine comes on. It will likely beat your sedan in a race. Very sharp car.
ALSO: People who make fun of sales numbers, keep in mind the Volt still isn't sold everywhere (doesn't hit Las Vegas til Winter for example). There are waiting lists. This car is the beginning of a new class of cars.
@NowLifeStarts Car of the year, Motor Trend Magazine, hmm and I think they have a lot more knowledge on cars in their pinky than you have in your whole family blood line.
@NowLifeStarts LMAO@U, you epicly fail in your comment so now lets turn to me being paid to comment here, man that stinks of paranoia on your part. Or now when people buy new technology their sheep, okay, So you live out in the woods driving a horseless carriage? Since owning my volt I have not used a drop of gas in it, and the electricity cost in comparison to gas is on the 50cents per gallon range... If I'm gullible what kind of fool does that make you!
@WDPlumbing Starting a message off with LMAO@U is what you would call an epic fail and also makes nobody want to read the rest of your obviously pathetic sheepish rant. Run along go meet up with the flock.
@NowLifeStarts LMA@U, again! apparently you need to Google the word fail, and learn how it's applied. Enjoy throwing your money in over seas oil, and down the drain, I'll do my best to keep my money here, in my country, the US. Now watch the flock drive by and wave to you, all while filling up with your saudi oil, time after time after time. Bwahaha...
@WDPlumbing You are such a sheeple it is funny. Electric hybrid cars are a fucking joke. We should have been using hydrogen power years ago but the oil companies who control the shills in government wouldn't allow it. The entire system is set up to fill the elites pockets. GM is now government motors. What a fucking pile of trash. 400+ lbs of batteries in your tin can. Real environmentally friendly. lol
@NowLifeStarts You are such a clueless tool it's funny to think you can walk, talk and chew gum at the same time. If you actually kept up on the information of the volt you would know that when the battery is removed after 10+ years of service it maintains 70% of it's usability, and chevys currently working on the next phase of how to next use that removed battery in homes as back up power supplies and the such. Commenting before learning really shows the lazy attitude you bring to this topic.
@WDPlumbing 25-50 mile range on the 400+ battery? That's it? How pathetic. You got suckered into buying a government motors dolt. LOL! uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh derrrrrr. Do you always believe everything you are told? More proof of sheeple syndrome. BAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! HAHAHAHAHA GO AWAY RETARD!
@NowLifeStarts hahah, you dumb ass, I just turned over 220 miles all on battery, not burning a single drop of gas, and MANY owners are going WELL over 1000, yes a thousand miles on battery only.. you really have NO Clue. But of course your not talking from experience. Which makes you the Retard... next I guess you will tell us all about proper space travel, again, with no experience what so ever, except with what you conjure up in your pathetic brain. Go buy some more Saudi Oil, for Al-Qaeda.
@NowLifeStarts Hey special ed student, try using those keys on the keyboard, and actually state what you mean, I know you think we can all read your mind, especially when you never stated a word about mags, jeez, what a tool...
@WDPlumbing This was your reply "Car of the year, Motor Trend Magazine, hmm and I think they have a lot more knowledge on cars in their pinky than you have in your whole family blood line. "
My reply was that some people will say anything when paid. Anyone with have a brain can figure out who I was talking about. Unfortunately your head is stuffed so far up your ass you have no clue. You will defend the shit hole dolt because you were dumb enough to buy one. Probably a green sheep too. lol
@NowLifeStarts For YEARS motor trend has picked fantastic cars as car of the year, many times not even American, but SUDDENLY now that its actually a car that's more high tech than the Saudi oil burning piece of shit you drive, they were paid to pick the volt? LOL, wow, your paranoia is scary, stay locked up at home with your conspiracy theories, we don't want to see you out in public.
@WDPlumbing The best thing about buying a government motors dolt is you get to defend the pos to make yourself feel better about buying such a joke of a car. I'll stick to my bmw and Dosge diesel 4x4 you can have your government motors overhyped tree hugger special.
I don't have to defend the cars I drive because I know they are fun to drive and get me wherever I want to go. Have fun defending your turd mr doltmaster. hahahahahhaa
@NowLifeStarts Yeah I didn't think you would have a response for all your lack of knowledge on a topic you wanted to be so clearly master of. Only to find out you dished out lies and misinformation based mostly on your stupidity. Congrats, I think you got your whole foot in your mouth. But you want to know what REALLY is the best thing about buying a Volt, it's the fact I'll get your tax money as an incentive, thanks Nolifestarts...lol I'm gonna enjoy the 10 grand in my pocke...Bahahahahah
@WDPlumbing The dolts sales numbers are pathetic. Those suckers that actually bought them on the lame hype now feel the need to defend them. Some people have plenty of money and can afford to buy all the gas they need. The corruption has gone on too long and it is too late. The game is over and looking like a retard driving a government motors dolt is not going to help anything. Do you wear a pink sweater tied around your neck when driving your dolt? HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA!
@NowLifeStarts Funny, GM is ramping up production.. odd... but their you go again... Now I'm really going to enjoy YOUR tax money, I'll smile and think of the tool in the Dodge 4x4.. LOL... to the bank.
@WDPlumbing You still believing everything you are reading? They have to make things look good. They got bailed out with taxpayer money. Just like your other buddy gave half a billion in taxpayer money to a failing solar company. Call as many dealers you can and see how the dolts are selling. That is called real world DD not being a sheep and believing everything you hear. Once again you have shown you are the typical dolt owner. Gullible and unable to think on their own. GO AWAY YOU DOLT!
@NowLifeStarts My dealer has sold three this month.. I've seen MANY on the road, but of course I'm not dumb enough forget that the car is not even available in very many states yet. But new states keep being added, maybe that's why they have to ramp up production? duhhh.. No, I'm not going away, after all, it's a Volt video, your the one in here showing your ignorance.
@WDPlumbing Why do you keep thanking me for taxpayer money? Are you that broke? You must understand some people have succeeded in life and don't have to rely on tax rebates to survive. See that illegal alien receiving welfare? If you pay taxes you are feeding that person. Your tax talk is just lame. I really hope you aren't that hard up.
@WDPlumbing 3 whole cars? Wow. They are flying off the showroom floor. lol Fox news is for brainwashed queers. You have been fun to fuck with because you are easy to get upset even though your next comeback would be I'm not upset. Too predictable. Have fun with your dolt. Time to go watch the end of the football games on my energy sucking 65" plasma. Sure glad I don't have to rely on tax rebates and sucking money from others to survive. Take care Mr Doltmaster.
@NowLifeStarts Well that's why I told you to keep watching your fox news, if the shoe fits!! Keep on pouring your money into overseas oil, the funneled money to terrorists love you for it! I never thought the term "stupid American" would fit someone so well. Thanks NOLIFE....LOL... Think I'll go out and buy a 72 inch plasma with your money...HAHAHAHAHAHAH
@NowLifeStarts (posted by NO LIFE STARTS- Pull your head out of your ass you fucking moron!) Bingo, theirs that rage and anger reply that I was looking for, thanks for making my day.. Sure wish I could be their when you have to pull over and fill up with that expensive diesel just to watch a Volt drive by the station, I can imagine your red fuming face now...LOL.. post a video of it here so we can all get a laugh.
@NowLifeStarts Got NO LIFE down to insults only now, ...LOL... misinformation and lies all used up... switching to last resort! Typical Republican thinking.
@WDPlumbing You still crying? You bought into the hype of the dolt. They aren't selling for shit. Didn't you start all this off calling people special ed students? Get over it and quit crying. Nobody cares! Go make sure your batteries are fully charged so you can pick up the roto rooter to clean out your cornhole so when you stick your head back up there it wont stink as bad. How does politics get in this? Democrats and Republicans what does it matter? They are all lying bastards.
@WDPlumbing Besides Mr Doltmaster if nobody bought gas how would all your buddies in office and all their friends in the oil companies make money? The system is rigged. You can't win and life is too short to be a sheeple driving a dolt. BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
lmfao. its 2 years later and these turds aren't being bought by anyone. they should have canned this project when they went bankrupt. in fact, GM itself should have been canned all together after 2009. its now a corperate walking zombie that the retards who buy this trash support. shame on all of those who have bought a "new gm" car. your a shame to everything America has stood for in the past.
@WDPlumbing i never subsrcibed to their channel, and never will.(this video came up on my suggested list and i thought the car would explode. disappointing.) this company is in the shithole, and it will never return to its former glory.
@Lrules364 I'm sorry you just haven't been around long enough to know how bad they used to be. With the amazing Cadillac CTSV, the crazy ZR1, and one of the most advanced engineered cars in the world, the volt and it's drive system, now pushing 200mpg. Their are few car companies I don't care for, and Chevy used to be one of them, but with the turnaround I've witnessed first hand, since the 70's it's foolish to say they are in a shithole.
Thousands of car accident victims were left behind by the massive government bailouts of GM and Chrysler. The $50 billion rescue of GM and the restructuring of Chrysler allowed them to "wash away legal responsibility for car-accident victims who had won damages or had pending lawsuits," OMG just found out,NO VOLT FOR ME.
@qtrinh Some day it will get over 100mpg once the make the generator a bio diesel motor and install a solar panel roof like the toyota and create a hood scoop air turbine. By 2013 almost all cars will have the option of electric motor or gas
NEW TECHNOLOGY? You're kidding me? They were able to get more than 100 miles with the EV1 back in 96 when Lithium batteries didn't even exist on the market.
And they can't make this thing to go more than 40 miles on a charge? GM fucked up again. Man!!! This company should have been left to collapse.
That prototype looks fucking terrible. Usually the concept is cooler. this is the first time it isnt. IMO. Way too expensive even if it did meet gasoline engine performance standards. I have better things to spend $40,000 on.
0:33 thats some irony! the truck says "RELIABLE" LOL but seriously this is the old version OR prototype OR you can even all it a concept. what ever tickles your peach.
HAHA, even Teslas test vehicles do 100x better than this in their testing/prototype phase. If GM had stuck with the EV-1, imagine what kinna progress we would be enjoying now. Instead they are still chasing Toyota to build a better hybrid (the Volt), while China is Demanding we ( America) must share our knowledge of electric vehicles or they will slap us (Americans) with trade embargo. The Volt is a flop, just like GM is a Sell-out.
@Tamayo1980 i guess you do not know that Tesla has sold out to your friends at Toyota, Toyota will steal as much technology from them as they can, you will see they will end up suing each other. My two Chevys Dear Tamayo 1978 Van 240 thousand miles original engine and tranny no problems. My 2003 Cavalier LS sport 80 thousand trouble free miles. My 1984 Honda CRX in the junkyard where it belonged after only 60 thousand miles, no brag just fact so back up your B.S. dear, over and out.
I am a loyal Chevy fan. My family and I have had good luck with them, but I'm feeling more and more pessimistic about their existence. This is the vehicle that is supposed to save GM, but the project is shady, will be undercut, and have the same fate as EV1. "There is no demand, it costs us too much money, ect." It is nothing more but an excuse to get bailout money. If they don't pull their act together, i'll consider a Honda as my next car. GM, you cannot afford to lose my business.
@ChickenC0re Wow, how times have change from a year ago, it's out, has been and i got one, it's FRICKING amazing! Fit and finish are stunning, quality is as good as my Mercedes, a joy to drive. Chicken, you need to test drive one of these, it's a blast.
@KhyronDesintegrado So just because the battery is hard to get out it is a bad car. So that would make most foreign cars bad too because i know it takes a little bit of extra time to get those battires out too. The socket for the tailight would of been covered under warrenty.
@mooserman911-Be specific about foreign cars, because I also own a 2000 Honda CRV and I changed the battery 5 days ago and I did not have to take any extra bars like on the Checy Venture and in the las 10 years I have not change a single build on it. The 99 Venture transmission died 5 moths ago the newone cost me $3K from GM, but my CRV still strong and all it news is a timing belt. Admit what everybody knows: Most American cars are crappy cars
This video should be removed this was a prototype, GM dropped the ball even allowing this to be filmed, more ammo the the American car haters out there in Yoshi land that love slamming American companies and then wonder why the country is going down the tubes. PLEASE CHECK OUT NEWER VIDEOS ON THIS GAME CHANGING TECHNOLOGY.
@MrFordgm lolGM still suck. after all theses years of manufacturing cars and planned obsolesce GM still can't see the error of their ways? The GOV. should have let them failed. A true American company (Tesla) is the company that should have received the GOV's help. IF, IF the bailout money had went to tesla to Manufacture 100% electric cars for 60% of American's our economy would be way better and the world start to become electric driven by American innovation. GM had their chance with the EV-1
To all the people who think the performance of this show car (not even a prototype) is somehow an indication of the performance of the production Volt, you're idiots. Most show cars aren't designed to do anything more than roll out onto a stage from behind a curtain. They're purely cosmetic.
@StraightOuttaDC So when you have your little nissan leaf and you have to stop driving after you hit 100 miles, I will be cruising past you in my volt laughing.
Man this is from 2008, the car is still 2 years away from being produced. You could have this video for any car in its design stage. Plus this is a totally new technology, with totally new batteries and a totally new software package. New for the industry, not just this model. As any engineer can tell you, things don't work right off the drawing board. That's the danger of giving sneak peeks at your product before it's ready.
@proaudiohd You are a bit behind the times....this car is not 2 years away from being produced..lol. Volts are already being produced at the Hamtramck plant as of a few weeks ago and the ones available for the public to purchase will be on sale in November.
@proaudiohd I must have read your comment wrong..sorry for that. I thought you were saying that the video is from 20008 AND that as of now the car is still 2 years away from being produced.
@proaudiohd Toyota RAV4 EV, was a viable ev car and that was years ago, it was only big oil in the form of Chevron buying up the patent for the batteries and suing Toyota for $30 million that has stopped Toyota producing the car for general release, we could have an EV now that's fast and does over 100 miles on a single charge if the battery tech wasn't being sat on by Chevron, the volt is a joke and not a very funny one at that.
@MyRepresentativeOrg I don't think they killed it. Or maybe they did. But who honestly cared at that time? Only the stupid environmentalists really. It's that stupid so called "documentary" of who killed the electric car that made the who stupid idea popular. For one they batterys at the time in the EV1 were shit. Newer lithium batterys are lighter, charge quicker, and can thus take you farther. But if you really want to see innovation we need to think deeper.
GM Does not want to make electric cars and our government does not want us to have them either , to much money is made on fossil fuel and the tax dollers that come from it.
. GM just need little time and support to make the Volt work.
GM just need $90000000000000000000000000 billions of dallor and to hire everyone in Haiti to be their Design / Engineer team and give them 99 years to prepare thats all.
GM just need a little bit of Money and little bit of Support and little bit of Time thats all !!
This video is crap as are most of the posters here. It was shot in the very early days when they had the very first prototypes and they were just getting started. It's absolute shit. The Volt is working wonderfully well and will amaze the world when it comes out later this year. The Volt never claimed it could go 200mpg. It's difficult to calculate the Volts gas mileage due to the fact you can't measure it in a normal way. If you go less than 40 miles a day you have infinite gas mileage.
Buy a TESLA ROADSTER. IT Works! Or wait for the Model S sedan. 0-60 in 5 secs, 100+ miles per hour, 300 miles on a charge, and 45 minutes to charge! TESLA MODEL S comming in 2011 or 2012!
Tesla is not long for this world. People are not going to drive an all electric due to range anxiety. The S Sedan will probably be over 100K while the Volt will be about 33K. The Volt has extended range and can keep going as long as you can find a gas station. Your info for 300 miles on a charge and the charge taking 45 is bullshit. That's not possible. I don't know where you get those number but they are garbage.
The EV-1 was an all electric car that wasn't right for the times. GM would have needed to charge 90K for a two seat all electric and nobody would have bought in at the time. Nobody bought a EV1. They were leased. GM lost over a billion dollars on the whole project. They never could have made money with the EV1. The EV1 would not pass Dept of Transportation crash tests so GM could not have built the car even if is wanted. You don't know anything slyman86.
LOL....maybe GM should put Fins on the back like they did in the late 1950s. I wonder how much investments the big three own in the oil companies.I'm sure the greedy fat bloated older than dirt CEO's own a share or two.
LOL. I drive a 4Runner and a Maxima. I still laugh when GM ultimately fail; 2 reason. Because they are sold America to the Oil companies and they crush the one true revolution American ever had in electric vehicles the EV-1. Its been 13years since the EV-1 was first introduced, that could have been 13years of advancements in constant development and improvements over the years. I love my foreign vehicles, cause they are made better and last longer. I hope Tesla Motors stand up for American cars

The Volt is an over-priced hybrid. At the current price, It will die a slow death. It cannot compete with the Prius, and even the Nissan Leaf is outselling it....LOL.
paulfornasier 1 month ago
@paulfornasier November 2011 Volt sales at 1,108 units. Leaf - 672. Volt sales ramp up as vailability increases and people realize that Leaf can only serve as a second car. You can not take it on trips. This is why I would never be able to buy a Leaf. Volt on the other hand, although more expensive, functions as fully electric on commutes, but does not limit range. So you can have it as your only car.
whotolduso 1 month ago
@whotolduso People still complain because the Volt is a crap car. They were supposed to come out with an all electric with great range....and they came out with a plug-in hybrid with an extremely crappy range as an all-electric, and a really crappy price also. Many people really wonder if GM is really attempting in any way, shape, or form to promote the use of electricity to power cars.. They bought out the best battery company in the US....and ended up using an LG battery...????
paulfornasier 1 month ago
@paulfornasier you dont understand the advantage of having a range extender? The leaf can only serve you as a second commuter car precisely because it is pure electric. The crappy price is solely because of the battery. By the way the EV1 suffered from exactly the same issues as the volt and every other electric car. So to praise it and then to bash the Volt is hypocritical.
whotolduso 3 weeks ago
@whotolduso I don't praise the EV-1. The EV-1 is a decade old.....and technology moves a hell of alot in 10 years, and yet it still had much better battery range than the Volt...LOL. That says a hell of alot right there... Every other decent electric vehicle surpasses the Volt in electric range...and some by several multiples.
paulfornasier 3 weeks ago
When I was a kid seventy years ago, they used to argue which was best, the chevy or the ford. Now it is the honda or the toyota with othe foreign cars mixed in. The civic is a great economy car, but the prious is king. Maybe the volt will improve until it challenges the prious, but for now, it is the prious.
Iambigcougar 2 months ago
@Iambigcougar: You mean 'Prius'. And when you you're discussing from a technology standpoint, the Volt is "king". Toyota doesn't even have electric plug-in technology on the road yet. Not to sound rude, but are you familiar with how the Volt technology works?. The Volt is a game changer, plane and simple... and Toyota knows it, that's why Toyota is rushing to convert the current Prius into plug-in technology as a separate model in its lineup.
ReSanSax 2 months ago
@ReSanSax You are right. I would like to see the Prius get more like 100 miles on one electrical charge and then I like quality. They will have to put quality into the vehicle for me to buy. Of course I would like a big tax credit like what was given to former Prious buyers. I will wait and see. I have the money to buy.
Iambigcougar 2 months ago
@ReSanSax Ever heard of the honda EV? that was a plug in from like 10 years ago. why wouldn't toyota have that tech if honda had it ten years ago?
AutoTechie20711 1 month ago
@AutoTechie20711: The Honda EV was an electric car, not a "gas/electric plug-in hybrid'. Do your homework!...
ReSanSax 1 month ago
@ReSanSax Actualy I did my home work right after I made that stupid comment and i found that toyota and honda just decided to not put in the plug in feature because the gas engine is very reliable and that is what charges the battery. Also i watched who killed the electric car. Very eye opening movie. check it out,
AutoTechie20711 1 month ago
@AutoTechie20711 It's interesting to watch, much like any Michael Moore film, but that movie is pure propaghanda. There was no demand for the EV1 much like there is very little demand for electric cars today when gas prices have more than quadrupled. Notice that people vilify GM for canceling EV1. and now that they have come out with another electric car, people are still complaining.
whotolduso 1 month ago
@whotolduso Explain the "pure propaganda". What makes the movie "pure propaganda"? I really didn't see much at all in that movie that wasn't factual. Yes, they are people who are very supportive of getting away from petroleum powered vehicles...but that, in itself, does not make it propaganda. Explain yourself. I'd like to see what you think was twisted in that movie...to classify it as "propaganda". Please be specific.
paulfornasier 1 month ago
@paulfornasier Why propaganda? Because its half truth, speculative and presents only facts that support an already made conclusion. - interviews of people who loved the EV1. no interview of people who were uninterested. No information about other companies' ventures into electric cars (RAV4) and why they didn't take off. An unsubstantiated claim that GM was sabotaging itself with unattractive advertising. The very notion that GM would purposely sandbag an opportunity for huge profits is idiotic.
whotolduso 3 weeks ago
@whotolduso Also, you are not comparing apples with apples if you compare the Leaf to the Volt. Compare it to the Prius, if anything, or any plug-in hybrid...because that's what it is. If you compare to the Leaf, then let's compare with Tesla models, and see how outclassed the Volt is... Again, as many keep stating, the Volt is not worth the cash you pay. There are too many better options for the money. It's a loser...period!
paulfornasier 3 weeks ago
@paulfornasier The prius? what is electric only range of the Prius? Tesla, Fisker are all very expensive niche market vehicles, so their ranges are better. The volt is the first effort in recent years to deliver an affordable electric car. The leaf and the new mitsubishi too. You are complaining about the price. Can you not see that this was exactly the same situation with the EV1? The fact is NO electric or hybrid makes financial sense right now, including the Prius.
whotolduso 3 weeks ago
@whotolduso You keep saying the Volt is comparable to the Leaf. It is NOT. It is a plug-in hybrid. The Leaf is an all-electric. If you speak of propaganda, then this comparison is exactly that. It is an effort to turn the public's head to make a comparison that is not valid at all.
paulfornasier 3 weeks ago
@paulfornasier The volt is an electric car, like the leaf. The volt just has the fore site to cure range anxiety. If your at work and the school calls to tell you that your son or daughter just broke their arm and you need to get to the hospital across town you better hope you remembered to charge your leaf. Because if you didn't when you run out of electric power your done. With the volt the gas powered generator will keep the battery charged enough to get there.
BEANDIP3454 2 weeks ago
@BEANDIP3454 The Volt is sham, as many know. GM sold out the electric vehicle industry and shut it down by taking Ovionic's patent and selling it to Chevron. It essentially forced all automakers to shut down their electric car programs, as they were not allowed to use the large format NiMH batteries any longer. GM could have done much better. The Volt will not compete with all electric once the next leap in technology happens. GM is not trusted at all by the electric industry.
paulfornasier 2 weeks ago
@whotolduso How about the fact that GM was able to buy out the most advanced patents on batteries in the US...and then sold them to Texaco / Chevron. This is now a significant problem for Toyota in it's effort to bring out the new RAV-4 electric. Try that one on for size. Part of that story was actually told in the documentary we are discussing....and it still continues to this day,
paulfornasier 3 weeks ago
@whotolduso The reason that Toyota stopped production directly related to the inability to use the battery any longer. They were forced into a settlement with Chevron /Texaco. This is a clear and unequivocal fact. Toyota is now working with Tesla in regard to it's new version of the RAV-4 electric/plug-in. You seem to be missing some very important facts.....propaganda????
paulfornasier 3 weeks ago
@whotolduso Hey, why don't you compare with the plug-in hybrid produced in China? There will be some plug-in hybrids coming out in North America in the next year also. The Prius has had a kit available for several years now also...to do a switch to plug-in.
paulfornasier 3 weeks ago
@whotolduso Another important fact....Toyota only destroyed a portion of their RAV-4 electrics...and then decided to let owners continue to use them. They have been driven by their owners ever since, and serviced by various Toyota sercice centres. There are many clear facts that separate the actions of GM from other manufacturers. No surprise that GM was a focus in the documentary.... I will be interesting to see what happens to the Volt when it faces REAL competition.
paulfornasier 3 weeks ago
@whotolduso Oh..and the reason the Volt is not compared with the Prius is because the Prius is wallopping all competition, with millions in sales to date. There is no other hybrid to be compared with it. I see them constantly....and I really don't see any other type of hybrid / electric vehicle on any consistent basis. There is currently great success with hybrid production these days...and an all-electric Toyota is just around the corner. The major NA makers are just flailing.
paulfornasier 3 weeks ago
@whotolduso Bizarre for you to state that "NO electric or hyrbrid makes financial sense right now", when Toyota has sold over 3 million of the Prius, and is about to start manufacturing the RAV-4 all-electric in Canada. That is a statement right out of a GM / Chevron propaganda film or something.....LOL. It is one of the largest successes of Toyota these days. The Prius is an incredibly common vehicle...often used by cab drivers....because they make so much financial sense....LOL
paulfornasier 3 weeks ago
@whotolduso The one thing I agree with you about ...is that it did not make sense for Toyota to continue it's production of the initial RAV-4 electric. Yes, it was a program they were forced to introduce due to the California Clean Air Act. BUT...they did not sabotage the industry, as GM did. AND, they also had the intelligence to allow their vehicles to continue to be used.....which has allowed further advances in technology and adaptation.
paulfornasier 3 weeks ago
@whotolduso OH...and why was everyone muzzled when Chevron (after being sold the patents by GM) disallowed anyone to use larger versions of the NiMH battery? Basically, they brought all production of any electric vehicle to a halt, and put a muzzle on all parties involved in the court case. Again....a VERY significant fact that seem to have left out....that had a MAJOR impact on the development of the industry. It set the industry back for many years....and continues to do so.
paulfornasier 3 weeks ago
@whotolduso And about GM 's sabotage.....tell me why you would take all those cars away from people who were willing to buy them, and were making monthly lease payments?????, which were certainly not hurting GM's bottom line...LOL. I say laughingly....who was behind GM throwing away money like that???? The ball's in your court...LOL. You have to be incredibly naive to not have understood the politics in the overturning of the California legislation and the trashing of the EV-1.
paulfornasier 3 weeks ago
@paulfornasier GM and might I add everyone else including Toyota lobbied to repeal the California law because nobody wanted to engage in an electric car program. They knew that to have a usable range, they would never be able to get the battery cost down enough to make economic sense for a person to buy it, or for the company to not lose money. This is still a problem even today, a decade later. GM and Toyota didn't want to use their resources on something they believed would not take off.
whotolduso 3 weeks ago
@whotolduso Nice bunch of crap you just wrote.... I asked you to be specific about the half-truth or outright propaganda, as you first stated. What was said that clearly wasn't true?? Are you supposed to interview everyone in the world?? and why?? The documentary was about the EV-1...and the surrounding industries...and the events as they unfolded. The documentary had a lot of depth. I think you are more interested in some kind of survey, rather than a documentary...LOL.
paulfornasier 3 weeks ago
@paulfornasier Propaganda is not outright lies, its careful choice of information presented in a way to spin the truth. I said it's interesting to watch.. But if it was truly an investigative effort to cast a well rounded light on the issue, the information I mentioned before would have been included. The RAV1 is important because it was a similar effort by a competitor. So if it's really true that the demand for an expensive impractical electric car was there, why did Toyota cancel it too?
whotolduso 3 weeks ago
@whotolduso What I got from it was that there were forces from within that didn't let the good happen. It was like GM was working against itself, and of course I'm sure that the petrol fuel companies had alot to do with it. Its a damn sham/shame either way.

Tamayo1980 1 year ago 2
@Tamayo1980 i guess you do not know that Tesla has sold out to your friends at Toyota, Toyota will steal as much technology from them as they can, you will see they will end up suing each other. My two Chevys Dear Tamayo 1978 Van 240 thousand miles original engine and tranny no problems. My 2003 Cavalier LS sport 80 thousand trouble free miles. My 1984 Honda CRX in the junkyard where it belonged after only 60 thousand miles, no brag just fact so back up your B.S. dear, over and out.

I like GM their cars are very attractive including the VOLT . Don't screw this up GM and I just may have one of your "hybrids" in my driveway

@mooserman911... I know for a fact that they are crappy I drive a Chevy Venture.
Take the battery out is a bitch.
The socket for the tail lights is a piece of crap that burn the week after I got them.
Everybody knows they are bad vehicules.
KhyronDesintegrado 1 year ago 2

@KhyronDesintegrado Then why did you buy one?

@88beauzeau88 I did not, that was part of the family befor I told my parents not to buy American cars anymore!
And you know what I will give GM credit for the Venture is a really nice car, is almost as good as a Honda

MrFordgm 1 year ago

JrgrimWoW 1 year ago
If an electric car requires gasoline or any type of fossil fuel in any way, shape, or form, then it isn't electric.
This company has got a lot of fuckin' nerve; the EV1, the REAL electric car they helped destroy, torches this piece of shit.
No american car manufacturer will EVER see my support again.

mooserman911 1 year ago
Man this is from 2008, the car is still 2 years away from being produced. You could have this video for any car in its design stage. Plus this is a totally new technology, with totally new batteries and a totally new software package. New for the industry, not just this model. As any engineer can tell you, things don't work right off the drawing board. That's the danger of giving sneak peeks at your product before it's ready.
proaudiohd 1 year ago 22
@proaudiohd You are a bit behind the times....this car is not 2 years away from being produced..lol. Volts are already being produced at the Hamtramck plant as of a few weeks ago and the ones available for the public to purchase will be on sale in November.

@proaudiohd I must have read your comment wrong..sorry for that. I thought you were saying that the video is from 20008 AND that as of now the car is still 2 years away from being produced.
2003SCT 1 year ago
@proaudiohd Toyota RAV4 EV, was a viable ev car and that was years ago, it was only big oil in the form of Chevron buying up the patent for the batteries and suing Toyota for $30 million that has stopped Toyota producing the car for general release, we could have an EV now that's fast and does over 100 miles on a single charge if the battery tech wasn't being sat on by Chevron, the volt is a joke and not a very funny one at that.
Redshift21 1 year ago
GM & Chevron screwed us all by Killing the EV1 and the NiMH battery.
If GM does produce a Hybrid car in 2011 screw them, buy from somebody else, Honda, Toyota or Nissan
MyRepresentativeOrg 1 year ago
@MyRepresentativeOrg I don't think they killed it. Or maybe they did. But who honestly cared at that time? Only the stupid environmentalists really. It's that stupid so called "documentary" of who killed the electric car that made the who stupid idea popular. For one they batterys at the time in the EV1 were shit. Newer lithium batterys are lighter, charge quicker, and can thus take you farther. But if you really want to see innovation we need to think deeper.

If you go less than 40 miles a day you have infinite gas mileage.
juscurious 2 years ago
They also claimed the volt can go about 200 mpg. Pfft
whoo689 2 years ago
Buy a TESLA ROADSTER. IT Works! Or wait for the Model S sedan. 0-60 in 5 secs, 100+ miles per hour, 300 miles on a charge, and 45 minutes to charge! TESLA MODEL S comming in 2011 or 2012!
slyman86 2 years ago
@slyman86
I don't know where you get those number but they are garbage.
juscurious 2 years ago
Why is it an inconvient truth? Doesn't sound like they really want to sell it. Hey just bring back the EV-1 that they crushed.
slyman86 2 years ago
@slyman86
You don't know anything slyman86.
juscurious 2 years ago
This video is completely fake!
The journalist and camera man were never in the same frame as the car... completely edited.

The Volt at that time was essentially a Volt shell over a gulf cart- for show only. They managed to go maybe 15MPH at best.
The models they have now are fully functional and very close to being production ready. I'm very impressed how far it has come in such a short time.
