  • I have an older acer travelmate (can't remeber the model #) its from around 2004 I'd say. I would love to use it as a spare computer but it over heats so bad you could cook an egg on it. People always say their computer runs slow but this laptop is in a class by itself as far as lack of speed. It takes about 5 or 6 minutes just to turn it on. Does it sound like any of this could be fixed with time or money? Or is it just a lost cause? Any suggestions or advice would be awesome, thanks in advance

  • @sirjohnrambo

You have to open it and then open the fan.

It sounds like your fan is completely blocked with dust.

It will cost you a screwdriver i think about 1 dollar and a little knowledge to repair it ;)

  • @ratsgoth Thanks! You were so right, shit their was so much dust in the fan when I took it apart. I used compressed air to clean it (which I've never done in all the years I've had it) and it looks clean as ever now. After I put it back together and did a full system restore manually (and also cleaned house by deleting all my old files and programs that I never used, music, pics, etc) that seemed to help preformance wise. Its still kinda slow, but much better than it was and no longer over heats

  • @akuuler

    There is no problem

You remove the chip which have the function to power on/off your notebook?

Then your notebook usually turns off :)

  • One question, is it at all possible to replace the GPU (onboard graphics chipset) without replacing the motherboard?

  • NO!

  • KK, I'll put up with playing games on my pc. I can play games on my laptop like, the sims 2 and stuff, just, not my fav game, the sims 3 :( 3D Analyze don't work either :(

  • Sims 3 needs lot of perfromance!

No wonder tha it's not working with your laptop

  • I got it working perfectly! :)

  • good :)

  • mine still going stron (2350) after about 4-5 years. got it a couple of days ago! excellent value for £50!

  • oh yes ;) i got an 9 years old "ipc" for zero money ;) but the display is broken...anyway-on a monitor it is working^^ laptop's can live ages more than pc's i think^^

  • personally, I think it's the other way around, but, I can't say for sure as this is my first laptop. It's certaintly a very nice one and I'm very proud of it.

  • you "think" ;) i know because i have some experience^^ 2 broken pc's and 3 running laptop's-that's my experience!

  • i'll take your word for it. I hope my laptop lasts long, I love it and don't know if I'll be able to afford another one if this one goes. I prefer my laptop, so, GO LAPTOPS!

  • Yeah man ;)

Here a few examples why you should have a laptop:

A laptop needs not much energy(your one about 45 watts and a pc with equivalent performance needs about 300 watts)

A Laptop is not so loud

A Laptop is compact and you can carry it anywhere and surf wireless.

There are many more but i think that's enough for now ;)

  • yea, and they seem a lot faster than PC's. XP is good aswell. Internet went funny, a few minutes later, fixed.

  • i got mine for £250 second hand 2 and a half years ago.

  • Yea. The only reason I got mine so cheap was that it was from my dad's work, so it was £50 per laptop for employees. Two of them were broken, and I think I got the lowest spec one :( Oh well, I'm happy :)
