Words fail me, the emotion that Joe's music and Takeshi's film stirs within me are profound! Thanks for posting this. I was lucky enough to see Violent Cop, Boiling Point and Sonatine on a triple bill in the Glasgow Film Theatre back in 93.
I own an orchestrated version of this piece (that's with a full orchestra, not like a techno orchestra), and while this piece itself is good, the orchestrated version is so moving
Amazing amazing song, especially in Climax scene. It was anazing, when Takeshi came out of the car casually with M16 gun. This song matches it like anything.
Wow, what a song... I cant believe how good Joe Hisaishi is, this song and that incredible picture makes me make up pictures in my head showing gunfire and yakuzas involved in a story of epic quality. Im definetly watching this movie
I myself discover Japanese films while reading empire magazine....ever since then I am a big fan...people are beginning to know these magicians now.... Thankx Kankannan.
@Kankannan ... Because Takeshi Kitano doesn't need to be well known world wide in order to be successful. Sonatine is my #4 on my top list, the scene on the beach when they're just playing around is one of my favourite scenes. I'd recommend Kids Return and Violent Cop, both directed by Kitano and Kids Return's soundtrack was composed by Joe Hisaishi who also composed the music for Sonatine. Enjoy.
@jojoag1 Hana-Bi is 4# on mine, and I agree, I love the russian roulette one the most. However I feel he deserves more attention, he's one of the best directors in the world. And yes, I've already seen almost every movie he made and loved every single one.
@Kankannan ^_^ He's one of my favourite directors. I'd actually be speechless to meet him, probabily stand there giving him one of those signature empty expressions you see in his films. I don't know if he'd appreciate that though, lol. God Bless Kitano. Looking forward to seeing Outrage, I know it won't be as good as Sonatine, Violent Cop or Boiling Point. I've missed watching a good Yakuza Film ='( if you've got some time, try Bitter Sweet Life. Korean Gangster movie, worth watching. Good day.
it does say 'arranged' by hisaishi so i guess he sort of sampled the tubelar bells main piano melody and made it his own by orientalising it in a way.
thanks go to apsert for opening my eyes to mike oldfield's tubular bells, which came before 'sonatine I act of violence'
possibly, but it's not as if hisaishi and the company that released the soundtrack to sonatine are making millions of pounds from it (or dollars/yen) seeing how outside of japan it's quite obscure.
as opposed to like how, for example, kurt cobain did with nirvana for the song 'come as you are'
@slaveoftheheart Codea gaess ran during 2005, sonatine was made in 1993. If someone should be suing someone, it must be Kitano doing the suing process. But hes too cool for that.

I already did watch this and Hana-bi and I was blown away, 2 of the greatest movies ever... why are they so unknown though?
Kankannan 2 years ago 12
@Kankannan they are unknown because people are too lazy to watch subtitled films.
