As for wrestling, this would back during the days when fans would pick fights with the wrestlers (and usually lose), and wrestlers would routinely knock out hecklers or marks who wanted to "try" them.

Cops are often fans, and so stars are typically above the law-- just like for football etc; so they'd just write it up as "he attacked a wrestler" and call it self-defense.

You hear all the time about jocks getting away with assault.... if the victim isn't rich, famous or powerful, cops will know they can get away with doing nothing.
