FINALLY...somebody who knows how to get a good full Billy Squier tone out of a Tele. The Squier Affinity Series stuff plays surprisingly well once you perform standard setup procedures. (Install a good brand of strings, check/adjust the neck bow, set the string height and intonation) And many of them play quite nicely right out of the box, as well. Not bad at all for an import line of guitars. Bonus points for the ever classic PacMan shirt!
hey man how to you restring through that bridge? Iam having a hell of a time getting the string to go up to the saddle since its not a string through. any help would be great.
@boneypart I'm aware of this, I'm just making a play on the similarities in the name, plus it just seemed like a good idea since that's the music I was demoing on this guitar.
@MrWiiPS360 Take the strap button out of the top of the guitar, get a drill, and drill a hole a little smaller than the screw in the button. Then screw it in.
You are getting some awesome tones. Most people wouldn't expect that out of the gear you're running, but you obviously know how to tweak the dials! Good vid!
Not yet, but as of late I've been thinking about putting on a string-through vintage-style bridge (with ashtray), and replacing the original pickups with Seymour Duncan Antiquities so they don't squeal anymore when I have this thing cranked out (I wax potted them and that did not help much).
On this I was using a Digitech GNX1 with patches I assembled myself using a MIDI interface and the editor software. It circles around the Marshall guitar amp model with a light chorus. It was what I was using for my primary sound at the time.
i have a 2008 fender standard telecaster made in mexico..but im going to get a squre tele for my other guitar..I plan to change my stock pickup but listening to this dude playing I will keep my stock pick ups for good
nice solid rhythm playing there, good tone... isn't it great that in 2009 we can buy an inexpensive guitar and sound so good?? (I love Digitech stuff) I have a 1995 Strat plus and I love it but I'm gonna get a Squier Tele, what's the point of paying 1500 bucks just for a logo! not sure which one yet but after watching your vid I'll take a close look at the Billy Squier.
anybody who dogs Squier guitars hasn't played one lately, don't know what they are doing in the first place, or they're just repeating what is said on stupid internet forums. Squier has gotten VERY good, especially in the last 2 years.
is it worth the money to get this? im just looking for a third electric guitar, but this time, i want it specialized in Blues, Jazz n Rock n Roll... should i get the squier telecaster for $100-600 or Fender Telecaster for $1000-6000?

really nice job man, im bout to buy the same guitar. just wondering, what amp you using and with what effects, sounds sick thats why, thanks man, keep rockin
Nope, it's just a coincidence. Squier guitars come from V.C. Squier string company that Fender bought out in the 1960's. They had the name in the 80's, and decided to give it to their lower end models. Billy Squier has no affiliation.....except that he does play a Fender Telecaster on most of the early stuff (tale of the tape, Don't Say No...etc).
I like both, I'm not very discriminatory about guitars. I play strats sometimes, mostly for the extra sounds to be had with the middle pickup, and I've only recently picked up the Telecaster (this one is my first normal tele style tele), and I find I like it more than the strat as it's a bit hotter sounding in most cases. My #1 favs are the Jaguar, Jazzmaster, and Jag-Stang though.
They're from old Billy Squier songs (think "The Stroke" and "In The Dark"...but not "Rock Me Tonite"). I was using my usual tone at the time, I've kind-of been going back to that kind of sound lately using a Bugera amp, shame Youtube doesn't do that amp tonal justice though.
Dude, this guy has put all of Rich Kid right there for you!
C#m to B (pull offs)to A to B (same)
he uses the same chords for the verse
C#min B A (Rich kids got the money...)
then he goes back to B (break down...) and brings the bass note of the chord up to C and then slams down to(there won't be nuthing for you) Emin to F# to A then to C#min with Billy dropping that root note down to C.
So, it's basically C#min, B, A, Em, F#m with Billy playing fills around the bass notes.
Yep, that's pretty much it, he's barring the C# and pulling off the 5th, 7th, and minor third, and pulling it off to B major, then goes to A, and takes the fifth and the octave and runs it up to the 4th, then the 6th fret, and repeat ad-nausium for the main riff.
This takes me back in a good way. Found myself singing along with all this stuff. I used to play all this too. On tabs, there was a great-great book from Cherry Hill likely out of print now. But, they sat with Billy and he tabbed out all his parts and even threw in some suggestions on how to get solos down because he used a ton of studio trickery in the day, backwards solos, etc. Also bent the headstock if I remember. Brilliant stuff, totally underrated and compiled very nicely right here.
On this I used a Digitech GNX1 Digital modeling pedal. I used the british hi-gain emulation for the amp sim, a Van-Halen style cab-sim (Marshall?), and had just about all the knobs maxxed out except the bass tastefully backed off to keep the tightness.
In this vid I used a Digitech GNX1 straight through my old PIII computer with a SoundBlaster Live value sound card. I was using the emulated Marshall JCM800 setting with a light chorus on it, which is close to what I usually use regardless of the amp modeler I'm using.
Very cool! your assessment of Billy Squier is very spot on. I do believe the record company failed to stay behind him marketing wise and this really hurt him. I think during that period of time the whole' Use them up and throw them away", thing started. I am curious, what type of amp you are using, sounds pretty good! Have you tried one of the Squier vintage modifieds yet? i played one the other day that was just killer!
howcome i can hardly find any billy squier tabs on the net? weird
anyway im interested in getting that guitar. i wanted to know your general opinion about it. if its worth it and all. also, is it light? as in, in weight. cause the guitar i own right now is damn heavy
To answer the question on tabs, it's mostly because Billy Squier is highly underrated as a performer/musician, and when people started tabbing out songs, Billy Squier was being made fun of for that "Rock Me Tonite" video still (which I think is quite stupid, it's obvious the record company had it in for him when they made that one). So it's more or less his unpopularity, I should probably tab some of his stuff out and circulate it, I've been getting a lot of requests for Squier tabs lately.
As for the guitar, it's turned into one of my favorites, and thats saying a lot since I have guitars that some would argue are "better" because they cost more. The way I see it, there is no one "best" guitar unless your talking build quality.
In my opinion, it's probably one of the best deals Squier/Fender has come out with, a 51' style Telecaster for under $200, the last time they had anything like this was when I found some more accurate 1951-1953 style Japanese Squier Teles from the 80's for the same price around 1994 or so (I'm sure they are a lot more now). As for the weight, mine is VERY light, I carried it to IHOP and then home when I first bought it, and my arms were not tired when I got home, which says a lot.
Those Japanese Squier guitars from the early to mid 80's were actually great guitars. They actually used real vintage Fender Telecasters and Stratocasters as the template for those guitars. So the neck and body shapes are spot on like the original US made guitars. Nothing like the crappy guitars US Fender factory was turning out at the same time.
It really all depends on you and the guitar. I tried this one out out of 3 other Teles and it was the best one (the other one was a USA that played and felt about the same, and another Affinity in Black that felt and played like crap). Also, I dunno how long you've been playing or how partial you are to having a "popular" name on the headstock.
i just found a faulty part on mine one frst isnt glued down well enough and somehow a string got caught under it good thing i have insurance from guitar center on it
Only when the saddles get off-centered. That's fixed just by playing it, one way to know a good Tele is how much dirt is stuck in it's action screws on the bridge saddles.
The neck profile should be the same as that of the Affinity Series Teles fender sells (the non-blonde ones). It does feel slightly flatter to my hands though, probably because of the lack of a separate fretboard.
For the money I like the sound of this Squire Affinity better than a Fender American Tele. Have you ever played a Fender Special Lite Ash MIK with the hot Duncan pickups ($630)?
Nope, I have not been able to see one of those yet surprisingly. I don't look at Tele's too often, but by the time I was getting this one, I figured it was about time I got one. It's turning out to be one of my favorite axes for rhythm guitar parts.
Billy Squier played The Big Beat on a Fender Tele?
magscfc 2 years ago
Most likely. The guitars I've seen him with the most during the early days as a solo artist are...
- Sunburst Les Paul, 59' Burst style (may have very well been one)
- Sunburst early 60's Telecaster Custom (the one in the video for The Big Beat)
- Sunburst 60's Fender Stratocaster, I think this is the same one he's been using lately

On this I used a Digitech GNX1 Digital modeling pedal. I used the british hi-gain emulation for the amp sim, a Van-Halen style cab-sim (Marshall?), and had just about all the knobs maxxed out except the bass tastefully backed off to keep the tightness.

Thanks
creepingnet 3 years ago
have you replaced your pickups? if so what ones do you use? seems like the P90's are a popular choice
ichigo17 3 years ago
Nope, just the stock Squier pickups.
creepingnet 3 years ago
Proof yet again that it's talent over gear - *great* tone! Also great takes on the Squier tunes! I have a '51 myself, cool little guitar!

hey nice sound.what amp or effects do u use?
dachoidenppl 3 years ago
In this vid I used a Digitech GNX1 straight through my old PIII computer with a SoundBlaster Live value sound card. I was using the emulated Marshall JCM800 setting with a light chorus on it, which is close to what I usually use regardless of the amp modeler I'm using.

Dude I love your TELLY! Awesome. Just mail it to me!

Very cool! your assessment of Billy Squier is very spot on. I do believe the record company failed to stay behind him marketing wise and this really hurt him. I think during that period of time the whole' Use them up and throw them away", thing started. I am curious, what type of amp you are using, sounds pretty good! Have you tried one of the Squier vintage modifieds yet? i played one the other day that was just killer!

howcome i can hardly find any billy squier tabs on the net? weird
anyway im interested in getting that guitar. i wanted to know your general opinion about it. if its worth it and all. also, is it light? as in, in weight. cause the guitar i own right now is damn heavy
thanks
creative3000 3 years ago

The way I see it, there is no one "best" guitar unless your talking build quality.
creepingnet 3 years ago
In my opinion, it's probably one of the best deals Squier/Fender has come out with, a 51' style Telecaster for under $200, the last time they had anything like this was when I found some more accurate 1951-1953 style Japanese Squier Teles from the 80's for the same price around 1994 or so (I'm sure they are a lot more now). As for the weight, mine is VERY light, I carried it to IHOP and then home when I first bought it, and my arms were not tired when I got home, which says a lot.
creepingnet 3 years ago
Those Japanese Squier guitars from the early to mid 80's were actually great guitars. They actually used real vintage Fender Telecasters and Stratocasters as the template for those guitars. So the neck and body shapes are spot on like the original US made guitars. Nothing like the crappy guitars US Fender factory was turning out at the same time.

would u recomend me saving for a fender telecaster or get this little dude?
Mrmaniac15765 3 years ago
It really all depends on you and the guitar. I tried this one out out of 3 other Teles and it was the best one (the other one was a USA that played and felt about the same, and another Affinity in Black that felt and played like crap). Also, I dunno how long you've been playing or how partial you are to having a "popular" name on the headstock.
creepingnet 3 years ago
sweet ass tone and playing, what amp are you using?
PageandPlant4Life 3 years ago
I was using a Digitech GNX-1 on this video.
creepingnet 3 years ago
Awesome man!!! I love these songs... but I have a question: Is this the squier affinity telecaster?
egv19 3 years ago
Yep
creepingnet 3 years ago
for only 150 € sounds awsome!!!
egv19 3 years ago
Love your playing man. And the guitar. But what kind of amp do you use for your sound.
Some people think its just the guitar. amp and settings would be good to know also.

i just got one yesterday same color it plays really well except a few frets rattle when you play
JHOW95 4 years ago
i just found a faulty part on mine one frst isnt glued down well enough and somehow a string got caught under it good thing i have insurance from guitar center on it
JHOW95 4 years ago
does you tele have noises? at the bridge pickups
?
rspao 4 years ago
Only when the saddles get off-centered. That's fixed just by playing it, one way to know a good Tele is how much dirt is stuck in it's action screws on the bridge saddles.
creepingnet 4 years ago
good playing, im gettin me one of these lol
AcousticDave94 4 years ago
where did u get it and was this the $169 one?
Mrmaniac15765 4 years ago
I got it at Kennaly Keys music in Everett, cost me $184 at the time. They are now selling for less from what I've seen.
creepingnet 4 years ago
it really worth this money ++
Whats the neck profile like , is it slim?
Geokouu 4 years ago
The neck profile should be the same as that of the Affinity Series Teles fender sells (the non-blonde ones). It does feel slightly flatter to my hands though, probably because of the lack of a separate fretboard.
creepingnet 4 years ago
For the money I like the sound of this Squire Affinity better than a Fender American Tele. Have you ever played a Fender Special Lite Ash MIK with the hot Duncan pickups ($630)?
F1LotusFan 4 years ago
Nope, I have not been able to see one of those yet surprisingly. I don't look at Tele's too often, but by the time I was getting this one, I figured it was about time I got one. It's turning out to be one of my favorite axes for rhythm guitar parts.
creepingnet 4 years ago
Sweet sound man - what kind of amp / effects are u using ?
jonas4556 4 years ago
In this video it was a Digitech GNX1, I usually use a Behringer V-Amp Pro rackmount processor though.
creepingnet 4 years ago
I enjoyed your play. Please continue to enhance...You've got a very good foundation of talent on which to build :)
WhatBoxx 4 years ago
just avoid squiers in general. shotty workmanship
bigcountry4life5 4 years ago
Well not everyone can afford a Fender y'know.
Besides, some of my Squires are better than my Fenders, Tele Custom for one is better Squire than Fender.
