As it turned out, I had a twisted bowel. Pretty common. However, 9 inches of it had been dead for some time. They had to do an emergency surgery on me. I spent 8 days in the hospital. i found out later that I could've died in a day or two had I not insisted on going in to the E.R. that night. Wow, I had no idea. Anyway, I'm going for Bariatric Surgery in a few months. This surgeon says this surgery is a piece of cake compared to what I had done previously. Hope so.
@thetruth2011FYI It sounds like you got very lucky to have found out the problem when you did. I'm sorry you had to go through that. Your surgeon is probably right. WLS is probably a cake walk compared to what you've been through. I wish you all the best on your weight loss journey.
Wow. I had a twisted bowel a few years ago. I started having these pains shortly after I gave birth to my firstborn. Because I was overweight, the doctor just kept telling me I needed to lose weight and eat more fiber. Well, this went on for 15 years. During that time, I had even lost all my weight and was still experiencing excruciating pain on a regular basis. I finally ended up telling my husband I needed to go to the E.R. He didn't think it was all that serious.
My aunt died because the bypass. The scar tissue caused her intestines to twist. My mom had it before my aunt did and she's came close to death four times. She couldn't eat. She was SO dehydrated even though she was drinking sooo much water. Her intestines kept twisting and the last time it happen, the doctors actually had to cut out part of her intestines. The only reason she didn't die is because of scar tissue from previous surgery. She deals with a lot of issues now with her stomach.
@kaisch15atyahoo 2004 and 2006, I believe. I'm not completely sure, though. It's the worst thing in the world...to lose someone from something that was supposed to save their lives.
@kaisch15atyahoo Both my aunt and my mother's intestines twisted badly. They didn't catch it fast enough with my aunt because the hospital refused to fly her by airplane to another hospital to have the surgery done. My mom only survived all those times because she's had many previous surgeries and the scar tissues from those surgeries saved her life.
can it happen more than once this type of hernia. I had my rny july 28, 2009 and had my hernia surgery June 2010 and just starting having these attacks again. I even had my gallbladder taken out last oct due to it wasn't working anymore just stop working. Been getting this stabbing pain that has me double over randomly but now the last 2 days been bad. yesterday it was at the gym today it was after eating lunch I try holding a pillow against my stomach, lying down and then I try 4 gas x it help
@rdavis46 I don't know if it can happen twice. I can tell you other than a very severe (requiring hospitalization) stomach virus I haven't felt pain in my abdomen like I did from the hernia since my repair surgery.
Please, please, PLEASE call your surgeon or go to the nearest ER if the pain occurs again. Don't end up with dead bowel that has to be removed or a severe infection that can be life threatening.
I haven't been on YouTube in a while. Good to see you here. You look great. I'm sorry to hear you had these issues. This is pretty much why I decided against the surgery. I hope all is well with you. Please keep us posted!
Thank you for your information posting here. I am thankful you're OK and that your hernia was not serious like Amelia's. I followed her postings for 2 years, and researched RNY before having mine done in Apr 2010. 3m later, I'm down 75 lbs. Hadn't heard of Petersons Hernia until Amelia's posting on it. You explained the pain/location well. I will watch for it. Bless you.
I have done a lot of research I thought on having the WLS but this possible side effect is new to me. Thank you so much for posting. My insurance does not pay yet but they have changed in the last 9m from not at all to paying for the holder of the Ins which is my husband. I feel I will be covered in the near future. I play to go and check out more of your videos. Thank you again.
@Tagezs8 It isn't a very common thing, so it isn't something readily available to find. Yes, it sounds like your insurance company may be coming around to covering the surgery. take care - jenn
I just got home from the peterson space hernia. I prolong calling the surgeon from Friday afternoon until Monday morning. He admitted to the hospital on Monday. They did a cat scan but it show nothing. So he order blood work and the pancreas enzymes were 4 times above the normal limits which he said meant there was a blockage somewhere. So he had did lap exploration bowel obstruction and found that it was the peterson space hernia.
@rdavis46 I'm so sorry you have had to deal with this. However, I'm so glad your doctor made sure you were taken well care of. Almost a year later, it still scares me when I think about how much peril I was in. take care - jenn
There are a few different methods, but I think most that are done laproscopically (not open) leave a space called the Peterson's space, which could herniate. However, this is a very small chance. And, thanks!!!!
Thank you so much for doing this video...the same thing happen to me but the first time they did not catch it ....the second time on the cat-scan they did but it got twist badly.......and my g. surgery was 5 and half years ago ....so this can happen anytime.....I am recovering right now...
So I went to the Dr yesterday and asked him if the hernia was a Peterson's hernia. He said "There a 2 kinds very similar, just a second and I'll look it up." So he flips thru my chart and notes it was a Peterson's. Him explained the other type to me as well, but said my was a Peterson's. So, now we know. :)
thanks my dear, my understanding is that the peterson's hernia is because of the laproscopic procedure, has to do with how they "connect" our bowel post op, you probably lost wt well post op, that attributes to it...funny that our success causes the hernia..glad you are ok though...

Hey Priscilla. Yes, I'm very very blessed to have this complication found before anything serious happened. It was a fluke. I really like the glasses and they are so much more comfortable, now. I hope I will be a 'good girl' and wear them when I supposed to. :)
I will definately do an postop update, as soon as I feel up for it. Thanks so much for your prayers.

Hi Jane. I am sooo blessed that the complication was found this way.
Yes, I hope someone else listen to what I am saying and sees their surgeon and avoids something horrible.

OMGosh, your so lucky they caught it in time. I'll pray for your surgery to go well. ROFL.. I hope you night driving is better now. Sorry that made me laugh cause I have said the same thing. I need to get some new glasses for night time driving Grrr.... I hate glasses all together. But those are cute on you. Please be sure to do an update after you recover from surgery. Best wishes...
