  • Madonna's version makes me want to cry because it's so beautiful.

  • i dont like it ¡¡¡ i prefer to Sarah Brightman... she is a god with her voice... =p

  • I love this song and Madonna sings it with great sensitivity. Not only it fits Eva Perón but a lot of people, that is what make it a great song.

  • Going out on a limb here - i've never been a Madonna fan but this is simply beautiful!

One good example of how a cover can excel the original (sorry Barbara)

  • It's the story of my life .. Unfortunately.. Great song !!!

  • glad they switch it to Evita rather then Peron's lover.

  • Madonna took this song for herself because it one of the best songs in the show. Too bad her squeaky voice doesn't make it. She can't even sit in the same room as the great actresses who have played Evita. She is a joke

  • needs moar views

  • Her voice seems very wobbly. I don't really like it.

  • @Hinzmana it's called vebrato. Most talented singers have it.

  • @Livz945 exactly.

  • @Livz945 it's "vibrato" not vebrato. And yes, it's a quality of a well-trained voice coming from good breath support.

  • @ternitamas this is my song.....im always kissing some kinds strangers lips but never one love........sad but fun.......

  • She stole this from Andrea Corr!!! grrrr lol

  • Madonna sings this song with such emotion she's so good in this role, for sure couldn't pull it off on Broadway however no other singer from Motion Pictures could have filled this role like Madonna did, damn Academy Awards

  • It pisses me off that Madonna sang this in the film when it wasn't even her character who sang it. It just proves what a spot-light hungry ego maniac she is.

  • @rosario508 Actually, the only reason why it is sung by Peron's ex-mistress in the original is to give the rest of the cast a short break before the two huge energetic crowd numbers right after it (except for poor Che who's on the entire show). Because this is a film and not live, there is no reason for Peron's mistress to even exist (since she never made a whole lot of sense anyway), and giving the song to Eva makes more sense than dropping it completely.

  • @Spazzbert That's very insightful and interesting about the practicalities behind the timing of this song in the stage show, but even if it was meant to be sung by a minor character just to give the cast a rest on stage before big numbers, I just don't see why it 'makes more sense' in the film version that Eva that should sing it, or why Madonna should sing it and the actual displaced lover should MIME it. I do tend to agree with rosario508 that Madonna the star may have demanded this song ....

  • @nmlt5398 It also might have to do with the fact that they tried to make Eva less of a bitch in the movie than in the stage show, since the original kind of put her in a harsher light than she deserved.

But it's also totally possible that they wanted to give every female solo to Madonna so she could release them as singles and make a bunch of money (and get an ego rush). I don't doubt that that's one of them main reasons this song was given to her. She is a priMA-DONNA after all. :P

  • @Spazzbert Very good!!! We the audience were definitely supposed to be on her side in the film version, and I'm sure commercial realities played a part in assigning who did what. Great song, anyway.

  • @Spazzbert hi - i read Madonna's article in Vanity Fair around the time this film was released, and she said that she actually suggested to Alan Parker and Andrew Lloyd Weber that it'd make more sense for this song to be sung (in whole) by Eva, as the mistress would come and go within one scene.

I think of course commercial factors probably played a part - but artistically, such a good song shouldn't be "wasted" on such a minor part. (in a film).

  • @deane8 I totally agree. It makes sense commercially AND artistically to give the song to Eva.

  • @nmlt5398 yes, Madonna did suggest to Alan Parker and Lloyd Weber for this song to be sung my Eva. I agree with the "makes more sense" argument - for it is way more effective when Eva sings it, giving her a more rounded dimension. Plus, such a good song, in my opinion, should not be "wasted" on a character that comes and goes within one scene.

  • @deane8 I wondered about that. I still don't see it should be Eva's song - Am I right that at this point in the film, Eva was still in the room while the displaced girl scurried about collecting her things after being replaced by Eva, who then sings after being thrown out for good? Apologies if I'm wrong. So, if Eva was to sing it, it should have been in her own right when she was dumped at some point earlier, not here and now. I just don't feel another character miming Eva's voice is right.

  • @nmlt5398 Hi - no, the placing of the song was changed. I guess you have not seen the film version? In the film, Magaldi only brought Eva to back with him to Buenos Aires reluctantly after the young Eva and her family pestered/almost forced him to do so. Upon arriving in the city, Eva realised the real reason why Magaldi didn't want her to come with him: he's got a woman/family in Buenos Aires. So the young Eva was "dumped" - and this is when the song came in. Sung in full.

  • @nmlt5398 addition to my previous reply :-) .. at this point, the sense of determination in the lyrics makes perfect sense "call in 3 months time and I'll be fine .... I'll survive anyhow" . So i see this moment in the film as the pivotal moment of Eva's life and choices she made.

By the way, the throwing out of the "mistress" scene was also in the film, and the young mistress sang a short version of the song. What I get from that scene is Eva saw her young self in this girl: she'll survive.

  • @deane8 Well, I know I'm in trouble when the counterpoints to my opinion take TWO dollops of permitted characters to finish! I suppose I'm just too suspicious of the whole 'the Star gets what the Star wants' scenario, not that I'm criticising Madonna's performance at all. Apologies again for my fuzzy memories.

  • @nmlt5398 it's just a discussion, comparing opinions.. :-)

  • @deane8 Oh yes, and it's so nice to do it without all the pointless hatred that YouTube seems to bring out in some people. I'm well aware I'm not an expert on anything, I just know what I like, and I've just always felt it was ever so slightly odd for that minor character girl to mime to Madonna's voice. For me personally, 'I'd be surprisingly good for you' is the song that made me most sympathetic to Eva overall.

  • @nmlt5398 I love "surpringly good for you" bit of the film - though what i got from that is her setting the wheels in motion in terms of mutual understanding in the partnership between her and Juan. To me it's not an emotional moment, but more calculating steps in "moving on and upwards". Interesting how different people interpret things differently. But this is why it's so wonderful. As for the minor character girl (Andrea Corr) - it's her own vocal, albeit a shorter version of the song.

  • the guy at the end always cracks me up

  • 1:41 what accent is that? Is it Irish?

  • Comment removed

  • @JKR9509 I guess his name is Che.

  • @JKR9509 No she doesn't have an Irish accent lol! Source: I am Irish ;)

  • @GaeilgeSpraoi No, I wasn't talking about Evita (Madonna). lol

I mean the bartender guy. Che. the guy at 1:47 (ish). Does he have a irish accent? lol

  • @JKR9509 Irish?? LOL Antonio Banderas is Spanish.

  • @GaeilgeSpraoi I don't know many accents besides English ones. And I don't think his accent is English. :)

  • @JKR9509 antonio banderas is of latin american descent, portraying a spanish speaking man his accent would not be irish sorry

  • Madonna sings this song better than anyone who ever sang it before or after she did. I also love Madonna's version much better than the broadway show even!! Thanks for posting this too. XO : )

  • God I love this song.

  • 1:59-2:26, that saxophone is fucking sexy!

  • @OldSchoolLad oh i hate it!

  • but in the film evita sings it when he dumps her..

  • this song makes me cry sometimes... :(

  • @cosmopolita99 me toooo its so depressing

Evita nunca morira y Madonna tampoco.

  • very very talented woman, artist, icon, world idol! I mean Madonna

  • thanks god! Madonna has finally find her way. the wandering years have gone .. haha

  • MADONNA DANCE MUSIC LIVE by PIANO TEACHER !

  • just not that great. She does a decent job, but her voice isn't right for the song.

  • @TessTickles80085 Actually, her voice was perfect for this piece: sweet and lost, yet hopeful. Madonna delievered every emotion through her vocals on this soundtrack. And the final result was perfect, even though people will still argue about her voice, Madonna did an excellent job and the songs speak for themselves.

  • @bhindex first of all, you sound like a bender, second of all, it was just my opinion that it wasn't that great. You shouldn't be so stubborn that your opinion is best. :)

  • I love this soooo much ♥

  • i HATE how the music in movies is always raised a key.. WHY is it so important for the key to be raised? if there's a valid explanation behind this, i'm all ears

  • I LOVED MADONNA IN THIS! Her voice was beautiful

  • I saw this film the first time when I was four or five years old. I didn't understand a word but I don't know why I could remember almost every scene. I could actually remember the music from this film. And Antonio Banderas had become my childhood crush from then.

  • Modonna does a nice job on this song but: Peron's Mistress sings it in the Stage Play. Madonna being a great marketer takes it in the movie not to let this "Plum Get Away" if you want to see the totally great verson look at Jane Ohringer!

  • My Sister Sings This Song

If You Would Like To Compare Them Please Look Up: Emma Cullen Another Suitcase In Another Hall.

    Shes Very Good!

Please Check It Out! The Name To Write In Is Up Above ^^^^^ x

  • Check out my channel for those who love this song :) x

  • a wonderful song

  • Of all the "Evita's", Elaine Paige, Patti Lupone, I actually think Madonna does the best job. Not only physically, but vocally. When Patti Lupone slammed the casting of Madonna in the film version, all I said was "Jealous Bitch". Madonna, acknowledged her lack of vocal prowess and took lessons. She just shone in the role of Evita and surprised everyone with the way she handled the score. Madonna told Webber, "Don't Change a Note"! I'm going to sing it the way that you wrote it, and she did!

  • Considering the scandalous and paradoxical nature of Eva Peron, I found the lifestyle of Madonna and the career she had made her seem an appropriate choice to play a real person who has had her scandals. I enjjoyed this sad movie and I found it is played in foreign language classes for those who wish to learn Spanish and about some of Spanish culture, at least as regards Argentina.

  • @vdwest4592 do you understand what the Perons really did to Argentina? I don't think you do...

  • I've no doubt that madonna insisted that she sing this song instead of the mistress like it was meant to be. Can't have another woman who might upstage Madge.

  • @lasktguy it wasn't that. They wanted to make the movie more sympathetic to Eva.

  • love it!

  • i love madonna in this role.....queennnnnnnnnnn

  • This should be the theme to my love life

  • And mine.

  • @dsperlin mine too :(

  • @dsperlin Count me in too :-/

  • Damn it. I wanted to upload this video.

    Great song, anyway.

    Thanx for this.

  • hay

  • "Well maybe not that fine, but i'll survive anyhow." I LOVE this song

  • Tim rice, great lyricist.

  • Das Lied ist echt verdammt geil !!! Ich liebe Evita den Film :)

  • NOT HQ!!!

  • this movies war and is so beautiful!!!

    I wished ihn an Oscar.

People who have no Idea about musical would not have seen ihn.

  • wow... this used 2 b the story of my life

  • @catlover72084 wow, for real?? elaborate!!

  • i never knew the reason for this song, now that i do, I love this song even more!!

  • That's the very scene that really sucked in that movie. Actually Eva isn't the one to sing that song but her and Peron's house maid.

When Eva moved into Peron's house she fires the house maid. It's her who laments about getting fired.

    Damn the director!

  • of course, anything that portrays Eva in a sympathetic light must be bad!

  • wrong. the scene you're referring to is also in the movie but much later. as a reminder that eva used to be the one who got kicked out but now she has all the power and money and can afford to kick peron's mistress (not house maid) out.

  • " Time and time again I say that I don't care [...] but every time it marstters all my words desert me so anyone can hurt me and they do... So what happens now ?"

    I know don't ask anymore !!!

  • I pleased that I am lucky enough to have broken bread with you at my relatives house and knowing I will see you soon here at this private party for my adopted son to be. Your music has rocked me for many years and I thank you ...

  • In the stage version this song is performed by Peron's mistress, not Evita.

  • @iggirocks I think in the film they wanted a sort of mirror effect...

  • @iggirocks oh in the movie, both of them sing this song

  • @iggirocks and that's the way they should have kept it in the movie. Making Eva sympathetic is dangerous, given what she did to Argentina. It's like stealing 'Do Re Me" from Julie Andrews and giving it to Hitler.

  • @evaperonwasbad This comment just made my night.

  • @iggirocks in the movie it is also performed by peron's mistress, but they gave a different version to madonna to show the passing of time and how lost eva felt, whih i really feel added depth to the character (about the only thing added in the movie that i enjoyed)

  • @iggirocks later in the movie, it's also performed by the mistress.

  • @iggirocks yeah when Evita tells her to leave when she gets with Peron

  • @iggirocks

in the movie, they do both

  • @iggirocks no it wasnt beacause the beging of the movie she was dating a older man who lied to her and she was going to move to new york i thought they both sing this song

  • @iggirocks and she fund he had a wifeand kids and he was just using her they both sang this song

  • @iggirocks Evita preforms this one but so does the mistress when evita kicks her out

  • @iggirocks They both sang it in the movie, nice foreshaddowing.

  • In this life we have two options, we can have strength to forget our pride, working hard for our goal ... or run away from the hard and sacrifice on the wrong track, for example, selling her body to make life easier.

honored women lose their lives cleaning toilets, but never selling it, or deceiving the entire country.

  • the story of EVITA has inspired many people especially those from the middle class....to be strong and believe that they can do like what evita did. form Glenn Indonesia....

  • this is my favorite song from "evita" and i really love her voice in this song!! she is amazing

    madonna i love you

    you are my queen

  • A great song & Eva shouldn't be singing it. Ruthie Henshall sings it the best.

  • I love this song! i can relate with her 100%!

  • I disagree, I think she did a pretty good job actually had they chosen a professional singer I dont think it would have had the same effect. I could do without Antonios singing true but I think Madonna deserves more kudos...This is my fav song and I relate too...strong yet lost..

  • i agree kudos to madona for a really good job!!!

  • @Rebelliousbynature ya.. but Banderas is an actor only.. let's not forget Madonna has first and foremost always been a successful "professional singer". Even though her voice can be argued about :)

  • @Rebelliousbynature Bullshit with out Antonio Banderas this movie would have been almost nothing without him

  • The people who think she is bad a bad singer must be retarded.

She is such a great singer.

  • I love how they lowered the key of this song at least 2 registers lower for this film...and also how Eva Duarte sings this song as opposed to the Mistress that Juan had when Eva took over and kicked her out. Rather odd...but I heard it was Madonna's mgmt who persuaded the producers to let Madonna sing this song because of the hit potential (it's a great song and in the original album it was the second hit single after "Don't Cry For Me Argentina"). But Eva didn't sing it..

  • also, the way the song was done on the stage wouldnt have worked for the film, a new character, apparently perons been sleeping with but only shows up to sing one song... yeah, but they saved this beautiful number by giving it to eva

  • Well it would have broken the monotony of only 3 characters singing throughout the whole movie!! I think that's why non-musicals people didn't like Evita, it got boring quick and Antonio and Madonna's singing was and is uninspiring. But that's another subject...

That's why I love the stage productions of it. I mean even the song "And the money kept rolling (in and out)" was NOT sung by Ché as it was in the film but rather the Campaign manager of Eva's funds.

  • I know...bizarre. It's not Eva's song! Gorgeous song, though. But, freaking Madonna is NOT a singer. ick. She's a brilliant ENTERTAINER, but what a weak voice and strained vibrato. Just kind of makes me sick, considering all the amazingly talented women who have played this role. (Talented actresses AND singers.) It's just kind of gross that they hired Madonna for this beautiful music. She made the producers a bunch of money, though, and I guess that's what counts in H'wood.

  • While I understand many of her live performances are not great she is an amazing singer, with an incredible voice. She made these songs her own and did the role justice! Your opinion of her being "NOT a singer" is rediculous...people like you just dislike her for her popularity and feel superior by slagging off her music/voice - she's good, get over it!

  • I love this song. It is so sad and I listen to it anytime I feel sad or abandoned. Not many people are truly able to sing it so it expresses the true moods and touches your heart

  • No one could have done this better than madonna. you don't get a beautiful girl with a great voice for this role. or else the story would be ruined.

  • I agree whole heartedly, madam.

  • Did you know she won the Golden Globe for this role?

  • I didn't know she won the Golden Globe for this role. I'm not surprised. Like I said, she's an amazing entertainer. The Golden Globes aren't given for singing performances. If you love Madonna you accept her voice as it is. Madonna would never have had a career based on her voice, alone. It's just not a strong, trained, belting voice. That's all. Stunningly beautiful woman with charisma and the "IT Factor" -- but cannot compare to the B'Way actresses and DIVAS who have played this role.

  • I love this song cause I feel her pain and sadnes...i can so relate to her life at this point.

  • I thought I saw Gov. Sanford!

  • I actually prefer this song when it's sung by Eva. It gives you more knowledge and insight into the kind of life she's had up until that point and sets the scene for the rest of the film and her incredible rise to glory. To me at least, it has more emotional appeal when it's sung by a lady who's struggled all through her life and who we know will soon rocket up the social ladder than by an anonymous woman who we've never seen before and don't see again after the song commences.

  • madonna was really evita.amazing job .two strongs and fighters woman

  • This is such a great song!

  • I'm sure Evita doesn't sing this?!

I thought the mistress women sings this?

  • Yeah, in the stage musical, it's Juan's mistress who sings it. In the film, however, Eva sings it in this scene at the beginning and there is a reprise later, in which the mistress sings part of it.

  • es genial está película

  • this song peaked at 7 on the uk singles chart

  • Because people care more about celebrity regardless of the facts., unfortunately.

It's only a matter of time before Emelda Marcos is exhaulted through the medium of film. She was a cunt BUT SHE HAD LOADS OF SHOES! *cue music*

  • DId Imelda do anything for the poor or women's rights? Name me ONE thing!

  • Lame reasons. It's not the first show of this caliber and it won't be the last.

From Mozart's "Abduction from the Seraglio" to Lopez and Marx's "Avenue Q, the prevalent theme is entertainment, not role models. Nobody goes to see "Evita" and leaves thinking.... "Goddamn, I hope I grow up to be just like Juan Peron."

Of course, if you want music with a morally inspirational twist, there's always church.

  • except AVENUE Q is rather poignant and brings out and fleshes out several truths we would rather not acknowledge

  • Name me anything those men did for women or the poor! Eva Peron helped the poor and won the vote for women. One anti Peronist said "Had we done a tiny fraction for the poor of what Evita has done, there would be no Peron and she would just be a bad actress!"

  • wonderfull performance

  • Beautiful!

  • GORGEOUS sax solo!

  • An awesome performance by one of America's most premier performers. Bravo Madonna!

  • and in those times women like Eva Peron had not much...especially if they did not come from a middle class or rich family...so she did what she could...she used men...and why not?

  • true and in process became one of the most iconic women in history. EVA PERON, EVITA.

  • This is my mom's and my favorite song from the video, we always sing along to it when we hear it. I can so relate to what she is saying in the song, also antonio banderas does a super job as the narrator and has a great singing voice.

  • maybe the paparazzi is horrific, but i love his voice

  • that paparazzi man she goes out with at the end is horrific

  • is "Huevo"... she made her famous

  • LOL!!! horrifc's about right!!!

  • the names of the guys she's with in this and goodnight and thankyou are hilarious.

    huevo-egg

    senor jabon- mr. soap

  • That's sweet. I really need to see this film.

  • you should... it's great.. but it's not 100% faithfull to Eva Peron's history...

  • Between bout 2:10 and 2:16 I swear da guy is life 30 years older dan her!

  • omg yeah! how many guys does she go out with? she obviously doesn't choose the right ones! :)

  • ashley, she was trying to make it and be a star... in the end of the clip she finds (or she's found by) "Huevo", whom helped her with being a magazine model

  • yeah, she slept with a lot of men to be able to have the life she did. it wasn't the most honorable thing to do, but just look at all she did. she really was quite remarkable. this is a brilliant musical, and mondonna is absolutely fabulous :)

  • it has not been historically proven that eva peron was a prostitue

  • exactly :)

  • Eva did exactly and just what men have been doing for centuries. If eva peron had been a man, she would've been applauded. In that sense, Eva did (ironically) what Madonna herself did. Anything a man can do, I can do better. I mean common, Eva Peron became more popular and more powerful than her husband, the actual president of Argentina, the one in charge. I mean, does anyone really know who Juan Peron was? No, everybody knows who Eva or EVITA was. I many ways the original madonna.

  • thats exactly what i say to everybody who has watched this movie, that was how madonna lived years before she became famous, thats why she was called MATERIAR GIRL, in fact she wrote a letter to the director of the movie to get the part, i think she did that because she felt identified with eva in that aspect...
