I'd froth significantly too if someone tried to neutralize me.
But in all seriousness, think about your own bodies for a second. We each consist of millions of chemicals that oscillate in complicated ways. That's how our nervous system functions, that's how we stay alive. In my opinion, we are a trickier cup of chemicals by far ;-). This is cool too! It's just not so rare to find oscillating chemical reactions when you enter the world of biology.
So my chemistry-fu stopped at 11trh grade chem class...but how can this process be applied to any real world scenarios? (hopefully all good applications)
Awesome vid though, thank you so much for sharing!
You should have said that the three potions shown at the beginning were divine gifts from God, and that the reaction when you mix the three is the basis of all of Time. Come up with a few more stories, start a cult and profit like the Scientologists.
go to 1:45 and watch the all in the backround... doesn't look real to me.. except his camera is just focusing but i wont buy it til he uses a real camera with not so slow focus...
Is it possible cork the bottle once you get it to the point that shaking it clears it, but letting it set reverts it to blue? As long as its sealed properly, that would be a pretty neat desk toy.
@nklimek Unfortunately no, eventually the thiosulfate would finish dissolving and would run out. There is another demo called the Blue Bottle, though, that does exactly as you describe! Do a search on it, hkparker has a good video about it. It'll run out eventually of course, but lasts for a very long time.
@Oskar3855 Hey sorry for the slow reply. I don't think any of those substitutions can be made. According to the paper I list in the description, you need malonic acid and at least the iodate ion. Feel free to experiment though, there's a couple different versions of this experiment!
To revive the 'dead mixture' you can add a pinch of sodium hydroxide and a splash of high concentration H2O2 and a bit of crushed ice to stop the H2O2 from decomposing from heat and the iodine from subliming. Can revive it 2-3 times but it's too dilute after that, caution with the lye because like thiosulfate it gets angry. ;-)

Can the Sodium Thiosulfate be the pentahydrate, because that's all I can seem to find easily. Or is that what you're using anyway?
hayjude99 4 months ago
@hayjude99 Yeah that's all I use. You're just mixing it back into water anyway, so anhydrous is unnecessary.
mrhomescientist 4 months ago
@mrhomescientist Exactly what i figured, cool
hayjude99 4 months ago
Can the malonic acid be substituted with any other more easily available acid? Also does it have to be KIO3 or does KI suffice?
Anyway, really awesome video.
Thanks!

The cloudy precipitate @ 8:20 is manganese hydroxide or carbonte depending on what you've used to neutralize the mixture.
DoktorKlawonn 10 months ago
What happens if you don't stir the reaction with a stir bar?
chemicalsymphony 10 months ago
To revive the 'dead mixture' you can add a pinch of sodium hydroxide and a splash of high concentration H2O2 and a bit of crushed ice to stop the H2O2 from decomposing from heat and the iodine from subliming. 2Lazy2ThinkOfSomthin 10 months ago
I think that cloudy solution may actually due to the decomposition of thiosulfate in acidic environment. Anyway, nice video and interesting reaction!
