I'm a street to seat guy meaning I have no prior military experience. I graduated college and submitted a WOFT packet and was selected first time around. WOFT is competitive but with a college degree and a solid packet (good LOR, high AFAST score, good PT), your son should get picked up if he decides on this route. And if he is in ROTC and graduates he can commission. If I wasn't selected I was going to go ROTC in the masters of business program. I then would have chosen flight and prayed got it

Just dropped my 18 yr. old son off @ Ft Eustis for AIT - 15T

He's in for 6-yrs. as a reservist. After AIT he goes back to TX & into ROTC with his reserve unit @ Texas Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth.

Wants to end up flying Blackhawks. What are your thoughts on the track he is on? Would there be a preference as far as him trying:

-For OCS after ROTC & college

-Working to become a Crew Chief and then submit a WO packet

-To submit for WOFT after college?

@Roofwalker56 I am not a blackhawk pilot or a crewchief but I think I can give some useful info. I have been selected into WOFT and leave in a few weeks for basic. ROTC + 4 yr degree = commissioned officer. OCS is for civ college grads or enlisted college grads wanting to commission. Not sure if he can graduate while in ROTC and turn down commission to drop WOFT packet. He can graduate, drop WOFT packet or graduate with ROTC and commission with flight his #1 choice, no guarantee he'll get it.

@Roofwalker56 WOFT is the only guaranteed route into flight which is why i chose this path even though I have a degree and could have chosen OCS. no it aint - the AH-1 cobra (attack helicopter) is the best. the blackhawk is merely a medium lift cargo and personnel carrier.

-i've seen one in action in Iraq. they are pure DEATH DEALERS my friends...

you do realize my friend, that the only helo faster than a blackhawk is a chinook? and that the blackhawk's payload gives it the capability to carry more weapons than you could think of mounting on the AH-1? not to mention the twin engine design is far superior to the AH-1's...they do deal death pretty well though...i will admit....

ok the cobra is a nice helicopter. but schmie33 is right. the blackhawk is one of the best the army has to offer. its faster than the cobra and can carry more payload than the cobra. if you ever seen the 160th blackhawks you would see what im talking about. im a crewchief for the blackhawks and trust me they are badass helicopters.

Well, if you add up all that its good in its the best one, i think its the same. Tho there are better specialized helicopters like chinhook for speed and AH- 1 cobra got more firepower. The blackhawks are legendary though
