very powerful movie plot actors everything the way it was filmed was artistic I bought many copies on vhs and dvd. this scene is one of the most powerful the levels an addict will stoop to... to get high. and how these kids grow up cold and hard on the streets. through out the whole i only saw fresh as a kid at the end when he finally broke down and cried in front of his father. the movie lead up to a climax where he orchestrated this ruthless vengeful take over and then you realize he's a kid.

It's not really that he couldn't take care of it. Look how he hung it first and then shot it. If it was out of mercy, he would've just shot the dog. That scene was to test himself if he could really go through with setting up the other characters to die. He had to be cold and calculating to do what he did and this was his test. i'll try to explain why the ending is powerful to me. First, you have to remember that Fresh is still a boy. His sister is being pimped, and he's an outcast in his own home.  He watches as two of his childhood friends are killed on the basketball court, and his schoolmate gets killed too. Fresh even has to kill the dog he loves,but through all of that, he never "breaks down". It wasn't until he saved his sister and got revenge on the gangsters did he finally have time to be a "child" and cry

The thing that makes this movie work is the whole "chess" theme. Samuel L. Jackson teaches his son the strategies of chess and the character Fresh uses them to sabotage the drug dealers who did him wrong.
