The baby squirrel was not afraid to approach because fear of humans is an instinct they learn from their mothers when they get older. I went to Kimbrough and I just have to say in Officer Davis' defense, that he is a really awesome guy and he does nothing but try to help, protect and teach the students at the school. He took me on a "ride out with an officer day" and I will never forget it. But if people ACTUALLY WATCHED THE NEWS, they would know that the squirrel had been reported to be behaving erratically, which strongly indicates the possibility that the squirrel may have rabies, and that is why the cop had been called over to protect the children from being chased by this potentially rabid squirrel, as the school had done everything to scare off the squirrel to no avail.

However, rabies can infect ANY MAMMAL, regardless of species; can't take any chances now, can we? I already know the squirrel was found to be okay and was later released. However, at the moment of the situation, I wouldn't make any assumptions as to the squirrel not having rabies, as it very well could have had it... you can never assume. Thank goodness it was okay though!

Although I felt pepper spraying it was not entirely necessary, I would not consider this act to be animal abuse. I'm sure he had reasons for doing it, in this case, the possibility that the squirrel was carrying an infection or rabies. It was reported that the cop noticed the squirrel acting strange and the fact that it was not scared of him or simply the loud noises in the background led him believe something was wrong. I think the student's reactions is whats making the cop seem at wrong here.
