OH..MY...GOSH! That was just hilarious! kinda' cruel..but hey, it's friggin' Sugar Bear for crying out loud! I know it's kinda' sad, but you just can't help but laugh!
@TIPTON340 Yes it is! I met Ruth a few years ago at a convention. She said that was her first TV job! She also said that because of the popularity of this cartoon, she and Gerry "Sugar Bear" Matthews made a lot of money in royalties from the Sugar Crisp commercials.
@melshorse No, she didn't talk about that to me but she did say that she came up with the Gladys Ormsby costume when she auditioned for George Schlatter. She put it on and sat in a prop garbage can with a label on it saying "Keep our city clean." It received a huge laugh from everyone on the set, especially George!
I always watched this show, but never have seen it in color, we just had black/white TVS (remember them?), I even have a Linus the Lion Hearted comic book still.
It's sad to read how many people don't get the sly irony and wit of these cartoons. Maybe the wit is too tied in to the times they were made for modern Youtube viewers to recognize them, so all they can see is the awkward slapstick?
'Linus the Lionhearted was the first Saturday-morning cartoon show to be taken off the air by the U.S. government. All these cartoon characters were Post cereal
icons, all of them are gone and forgotten except sugar bear.
Incidentally, I gave this thing five stars. That wasn't for the cartoon, it was for the person who posted it. Thank you. I'm grateful when ancient crap takes me back to my childhood, even though it's ancient crap.
Wanna hear somethin' funny? The only things I really remember about this are Linus' chair (I liked the levers; I was a machine freak and a weird kid), and the grouse.
Linus himself is eminently forgettable.
And Sugar Crisp should've stayed Sugar Crisp. What's wrong with sugar?
Dang, I'd completely forgotten about this gem from my childhood. The next time I'm lamenting that there aren't any good cartoons anymore (and compared to the 'nineties with Ren & Stimpy, Animaniacs and Batman: The Animated Series, there aren't), I'll look back on this and remind myself that things could be worse. We could have bad cartoons built entirely around breakfast cereal mascots.
What was the point of that first segment? That if you're ugly and socially inept, it's okay to hate you?
Do you have anymore episodes? I remember one where some natives tried to take over the island and Linus and the other animals fought back. Do you have that episode?
Probaly the same compose.r..btw Hoyt Curtin of H-B did the music for this, don't know if he did Skippy, as well. Of course another reason is the kangaroo..

@Elric33239 Hello, Did Ruth talk about her old maid character on Laugh In looking like Granny Goodwitch?

@racookster
Whats wrong with "sugar"? Good question, but someone must think it's a bad word.
In addition to Sugar Crisp, Sugar Smacks became Honey Smacks & Sugar Pops is now CORN Pops. Isn't that what they always were?

@tuttt99 They have things to carry too. Otherwise, they'd get pouch envy.

How come the background music sounds like "Skippy, the Bush Kangaroo"?
