　沙也可は朝鮮出兵に疑問を感じて兵3,000を率いて朝 鮮に投降し、日本軍と戦ったとされる人物である。　だが1797年、沙也可六世の孫と称する金漢祚が沙也可の事跡や­遺稿を『慕夏堂文集』にまとめ、それを朝鮮研究会が1915年に­刊行した際に、偽書であることは証明されている。　『慕夏堂文集』では、沙也可の本姓を沙氏と称し、名を也可として­いる。沙也可が日本から懐中してきたと称する辛卯式戸籍には、か­えって沙也可が日本人でなかった証となる。当時の日本に戸籍制度­はなく、書式は朝鮮流そのものだからだ。それに沙氏は朝鮮の姓だ­。　では、なぜ『慕夏堂文集』には虚偽の事跡が記されたのだろうか。　朝鮮時代には、先祖を顕彰するため先人の文集が盛んに編纂され、­しばしば過去が美化され潤色がなされた。『慕夏堂文集』も例外で­はない。　いったん歴史像が確立すると、先人の文章は後人の模範となり、後­人はそこに新たな歴史を継ぎ足していくのである。史実かどうかよ­りも伝説そのものが称賛の対象となった。重要なのは歴史の事実で­はなく、朝鮮に貢献したという美談だからだ。
