Art no longer resides in the market driven inventions like Tracy Emin.Animation, for instance,is continuously developing new levels of genius - they are the people we should be celebrating.
I hate when people go and watch a video of Tracey Emin on youtube JUST to slag her off for no reason ._. Seriously if you don't like her then why are you watching a video about her??? .....I love Emin's work by the way (:
We slag her off because she is a talentless ugly waste of space. In fact I regard slagging her off as ART so I am sure you and her really appreciate MY art.
I absolutely love her. People complain about her not being a proper artist but I think if she can reach this level of publicity and fame then mess up a bed, sew names of her sexual partners onto a tent and scribble sexual drawings probably drawn when she was hammered and sell them for an awful lot of money then THAT is art.
Why so much hate and anger towards self expressive art!? What the fuck is wrong with you people? Has she ever claimed to be "special"? Now, what is hindering YOU from expressing yourself?
@Pudovkingruppen "Self expressive art"? What the hell is that? Can you give us a precise definition please? How about "fraudulent, emotionally facile, sensationalist, self-indulgent crap?" Is that a better way of characterizing my anger toward the fact that this undeserving publicity whore is a multimillionaire darling of the art world?
Total shite....all taken too seriously. The real value is recycling the frames. Amazing the respect given to this total crap....and i like most of it. This stuff is worth $100 a shot, or else get some crayons yourself. Major shite.
Not so much the Emperor has no clothes : there is no Emperor.
"49 drawings in 7 hours... complete stream-of-consciousness"
The drawings look like napkin doodles. They certainly are a strong statement: "I refuse to put a thought or effort into this at all."
From what I can tell in this video, they depict a naked woman in a variety of contorted poses... the ones that are sufficiently drawn to be recognized as a pose. What is this supposed to say to me?
If modern art is like show business, then at least have something to show!
She's the one that's richer & she's about as deep as a puddle.
Popularity is no guide to quality, the Trustees of the Tate ignored Picasso & Dali, some experts. They will fall for any old irrelevant juvenile twaddle, regardless of merit
It's ground to a halt, you need more than grounding to get off the ground floor, to break new ground you need to be well grounded, then you'll hold your own ground, otherwise, your Art will be groundless.
I agree that she is about as deep as a puddle WHEN SHE SPEAKS but her real depth arises when she draws and paints.Very few artists have a flare for both linguistic eloquence and imaginative eloquence. The image is her language, try to hear what she is saying if only because many women out there identify deeply with her. Her art isn't groundless it IS ground-breaking.
@SuperBananafication1 No, Bacon knew how to fucking paint. Unlike Hirst, Emin, and a million other Tate darlings nobody will ever remember. But guess whose work will still be around? Francis Bacon's.
@sleepcity What I meant was Francis Bacon is also part of the Tate collection. So when 1cylynt1 said that the Tate only ever have "old irrelevant twaddle" were they going to include Bacon in that? So if you'd taken a minute to look into what I was actually replying to, rather than just sprouting off shite, you'd come across far more intelligent and worthy of an arguement.
@SuperBananafication1 Oh, so sorry you're feelings were hurt that I didn't trace three years worth of back and forth on here. God forbid you have to CLARIFY yourself to someone. And was the ad hominem attack at the end of your comment really necessary? Isn't that a sure sign you've lost the argument or at least that you don't think your point can stand up on its own? Also, if you don't know how to spell the word "argument" I don't think you should be questioning the intelligence of others.
@sleepcity My feelings aren't hurt, I honestly don't care enough to be hurt by some anonymous youtubers opinion hurt me. You were the one getting angry over something YOU had misunderstood so don't have a go at me. Oh and the spelling mistake, the only one, was a typo so I apologise if you were deeply offended by it.
@sleepcity My feelings aren't hurt, I have far more important issues in my life and too much to do that I don't have the energy to let some anonymous youtuber's opinion "hurt" my feelings. I was merely replying to your comment, which was just as (if not more so) angry and aggressive. Oh and the spelling mistake was a typo, things are bad when you're having to pick up on the ONLY spelling or grammar mistake someone has made to try and get a dig in.
I have talked independently to several people who went and saw this, all of them artists of various disciplines, and each one said that they were pretty disappointed with and unimpressed by her exhibition.
(Contnd) Therefore some artists in the past exhibited empty galleries. For example, Joseph Beuys, he lived with a wild wolfe in a cage for a week. He once said ' I take the responsibility of all the snow dropping down in Dusseldorf today'. If you approach Beuys's artistic expression from the craft point of view, or if you look for aesthetic, then you will find no art. The definition art has to be widened. Everything has potential to change, including art.
I dunno diarit, the art of tracey emin sounds a bit far-fetched..I can 'express' myself by slapping someone across the face, doesn't make me artistic..okay it's about expression, but her expression is pretty simplistic and pared down. If she can't explain what she's expressing herself, then does she really mean all the things ascribed to her work? I'm also very skeptical about her credentials on healing women in the world. In brief can you tell me what's so extraordinary about it?
wayzotoichi, you surely create some good arguement points but you tend to look at it from the point of view that values craft. Emin is probably one of the most known, at least here in the UK, figure, and she has got that celebrity side as well. Leave Emin one side, the essence of conceptual art in general is in the idea.
i just believe she exploits the feelings of onlookers cause she has set herself as a poster child of emotion. everyone knows playing the game gets you seen. she played the game. more power to her.
she probably hates all you assholes who think the cliche "art isnt about the aethetics" dogma, bears repeating. we know! if you feel you need to share it because YOU had to come to that realization, spare us. dont think not favoring her works is not understanding it.
That video was awesome. Hilarious music and it just seems very funny, "oh, look who i've bumped into at the Venice Biennale, Tracey Emin!". I'm actually writing an essay on the "I Know, I Know, I Know" work at the moment and this has been an entertaining break.
Tracy Emin is surely one of the most important contemporary artist of today and the art she produce does not require artistic talent and skills. It does not matter a child under 6 do the same or better, it's not about the amount of time spent to create the work and it's definetely not about the aestetic apperiance, it's the idea lying underneath the work.
1) so we're agreed it doesn't take much time, or any artistic talent/skill to produce Emin's work. Why is she hailed as an 'artist'..isn't that really quite stupid? Authors display writing skill that is tangible (and it is possible to judge in terms of merit), she displays..an underlying (unidentified) 'IDEA'.., which rich people buy because it's in vogue? She's not really earning that huge crust of her's....I apologise but I am a zealous skeptic of her so-called art.
it's not about vogue, it's about the return of matriarchal values within society. it's about the healing of women all over the world and therefore the healing of communities and societies all over the world.
in further response to JustSayitforGodsSake 2) Re: Her 'ideas'... that elusive quantity. She's yet to decipher this magical ingredient for the vast majority of the educated and lay art viewers alike. Either through the observing her work, or through her limited vocabulary palette. Sales pitches like 'it's the idea' is the ideal sort of argument-dodging vagueness that stops her work from being criticised intelligently or democratically. end of my 'tirade' :)
Art isn't about how realistic or photographical the peice looks, its about what its communicating. She communicates very well with her Art.... not one of you can say u dont understand it. You can say "i could have dont it" or "i could do better" but you never... she did.. and thats why shes wicked and your not.
We're not in the 1700... we're not looking for pompus portrait oil paintings!
i agree with that last comment, art isn't about a wonderful amazing looking painting or drawing it has so many different branches one of which is expressionism which (suprisingly)is about EXPRESSING yourself, if everyone is different then everyone is going to express themself differently. This is how tracey Emin expresses herself and if you know her past and her life then you will be able to see how she has shown this through her art.
Tracey Kicks Muuuch Asssss in ARt, What would you like her to Do? Perhaps you have ideas that are betttteer, Let's Hear them Let's See them ,Punchthedog??????? You got Nuts??????
I have seen much of Tracey Emin's work. And as much as I try to appreciate it, I always end up at the same conclusion. She is fuckin' crap! No artistic talent whatsoever. As she says in the video, she did a whole set of drawings in one afternoon "without thinking." And my doesn't it show. And if anyone cares to say "Well could you do better?" Yes!! A six year old could do better. What pisses me off more is that she can sell these child like scribblings for a small fortune.
I totally agree with Punchthedog. Fair enough art is sometimes about expressing oneself, but clearly even Tracey doesn't know what she's trying to express!!!she's off her nut!!! her work leaves me indifferent. She is no Edvard Munch and that's for sure!!! she only got established because of her celebrity contacts.
I often feel the same way too but when i try to understand her work from the standpoint of a woman struggling with patriarchy and all its implications then it starts to make sense. How much value would the sexist paintings of many a male painter have within a matriarchal culture? Hope I've helped.Peace.
I believe that a piece of art hanging on wall should not require an explanation to be appreciated. Many times, some background information adds to the enjoyment of the art, but it should not be a pre-requisite as is the case with Ms. Emin. You could of course try to work out for yourself what the artist was thinking, but the work shown in this video is not engaging enough for me to stop and bother trying.
this is getting off the point, it's not really sexist or anti-patriarchal issues ppl are arguing when they criticise Emin, it's her lack of 'artisitc talent', in spite of being spotlighted & showcased as a leading light in art..The vehicle of her 'work' of contemporary art is sorely flawed in terms of the DEFINITION OF ART. Indeed diarit some of the other sympathisers have stated her work requries no artisitc talent or skill..
art isn't about skill anymore it's about expression.skill is for workers not artists.artists like emin work from a feminist standpoint and attempt to liberate the feminine psyche from some of the no-nos that society imposes on us daily nightly hourly, take her CANADA YEH-YEAH for example...she's a ball-breaker and she's got guts.
