It's a pity that the only original instruments are the traverso, 1st violin and harpsichord. One can notice that the cello and the double bass have spikes (the baroque cello was held between the legs like the viola da gamba; violone didn't have a spike at all), and the other 2 violins have neither gut strings nor a baroque bows.
Oh believe me, we know. We feel very fortunate that a few students own their own period instruments, and the college has a harpsichord. We'd love to have our own whole baroque orchestra's worth of instruments, who wouldn't? But at present our budget barely covers parts and maintenance on what we have, let alone buying new things. If it's any comfort, the solo violin there isn't a reproduction 18th-c instrument; it's the real thing. And for the concert we did have one more period violin.
You make due with what you got. There's amature baroque ensemble in my city here and none of them have period instruments. Fortunately, they have the bows, and cellists usually retract the pegs in their cellos. They also have a pretty nice single manual harpsichord. But they play exceptionally well, and they've got the baroque technique down pat.
Yeah, true, the sound quality is pretty dicey, but for a bargain-basement Canon digital camera it's not bad! We'll get a real recording at the concert. Thanks for posting!
whats the blond girl's namea? violin player? and where are you guys from?

is that violins and 1 viola or the other way around?
figaromagniffico 2 years ago
solo violin on the left (as the video begins); on the right is the ripieno violin and just behind her, the violist.
and yeah, sorry about the abysmal sound quality, the video was taken simply with an everyday run-of-the-mill handheld digital camera!

Who's the flautist? She's very good.

its emily
also, umm, one of the "other two violins" is a viola, polluxgeminae.

Right, Emm986. Interestingly, there is no 2nd ripieno violin part in this concerto.
According to C.P.E Bach (as related by Forkel) his father enjoyed playing viola when he was not otherwise occupied.
But in this concerto, he would surely have played harpsichord, leaving no one but the 2nd ripieno violinist to take the viola.
Hence, no 2nd violin part.

Is that Emily Cunningham? Sorry, if it's Sarah! I always get that mixed up!

Loved this music. I'm playing it on a Sunday morning, which, for me, is the very best time to listen to baroque music.

Just watched again, and good luck on the
concert tomorrow night, guys. I'll be there
in spirit!

Thanks! First performance went very well; three more to go over the next four days.

Make sure you include the harpsichord
cadenza in the concert video. All we
ill-tempered clavierists are counting
on it! LOL
(Bach joke only 4 people in the world
will get . . . ) Ha!
MissyHolland 3 years ago
Ha, I actually got it. Lol. Very bad joke! ;)

I know! After 9/11 I kept seeing the initials
WTC (for world trade center) and it took
me weeks to de-Bach my brain and realise
they weren't talking about baroque music.
That's just sad.

Ha, got some serious baroque fever going on there!
