Great MOVIE ... I remember seeing it when I was young..... There were Black people with whites in a movie ..... not usual for the time.... and the scene when the southern white dude turns black was awesome with an important message! The Music was wonderful and Fred Astaire also!
This clip has the field dance sequence that Astaire had so many problems with. He was used to carefully planned dance numbers on soundstages and couldn't understand dancing outside, in pastures and streams. He wasn't young anymore and my theory is, he was afraid of falling. If I'm not mistaken, it was the only film where he danced in a "real" outdoor location. I think it's wonderful, especially the end, when he leads everyone across the meadow.
Well, I sadly disagree with most of the raves here. I do love this musical. I love Fred Astaire. But Pet, as good as her voice was, was a HORRIBLE actress as were most of this cast. I've seen it on stage and enjoyed it, the music is wonderful, but this movie is so sadly unwatchable.
have a heart mate. there not very good at the irish accent . and i do admit my little dog can act better, in fact your dead right i carnt even argue the fact, at least iv got a heart !!!!!!!!!!!!
Fred Still had it. I think he was like 66 when they filmed that! And correct me if I am wrong didn't Francis Ford Coppola direct this movie? Fred was a class act in every way.
I owned a hand written letter that Fred wrote to an old Broadway producer friend of his, ever so graciously turning down an offer to use Fred's name to sell some kind of record in the 60's, he really was a nice guy. I have scans if anyone would like to read it. Thanks for posting the clip.
One of my favorite movies as a kid, even if it stereotyped us Irish...::G:: But nobody I know remembers it. Everyone thinks Darby 'O Gill...LOL Just loved this music. Loved "Og", the leprechaun. :) And love Petula Clark's music to this day.
thank you for uploading this! i love it. my choir is singing it for a concert tonight, and since we started it i've wondered what the movie was about.
Absolutely wonderful! I wonder how Pet Clark found all those steps with Astaire! Love, love love this movie (and my husband taped over it by mistake and had to buy me the DVD!!)
I think he was closed to 70.

Not exactly, there are also many outdoor dancing scenes in 'Funny Face' 1957 with Audrey.
