  • Kirk Hammett in the 90s "Do I really need to play all those scales in different octaves?" Yeh, Kirk Hammett is a piece of crap.

  • Why are we comparing Kirk Hammett to Tony? Kirk had his time and Tony is still rocking his!

  • I like Tony. he has some lovely compositions in addition to being so amazing technically

  • AWESOME....\m/

  • Guys listen to tony;s work with CAB1 and CAB2,, This guy is master of many styles. Tony has been kicking butt and taking names for many years, do some research,, K

  • Kirk Hammet is a creation of the music industry. Just like Lady Gaga.

  • yeah not many "people" know about him. i understand the ordinary non musician streaming through youtube and sees him playing awesome licks and thinks "oh hes good but i havent heard of him so he cant be great." WRONG. Tony is known by a large community of neo classical guitarist and shredders he even plays with Vai.

  • Tony is an example of a brilliant guitar player that hasn't been put on the forefront with other guitar heroes. He deserves better!

  • @kacyjones It's bit weird indeed since his 80s albums sold really well iirc. But on the other hand i've been listening EoI for a long time and only now i start to understand all the fancy lil' stuff on it. So much depth on those early albums. Haven't listened the latter stuff too much.

  • His right hand is so smooth

  • Tony MacAlpine is AWESOME!

  • What ? I learned a lot with McAlpine in 6 minutes and 44 seconds than I have with too fucking much repetitive concept vomiting instructional videos.

  • 1 people dislike...mybe he think tony macalpine is tiger wood.

  • YES ITHINK THAT HE HAS BEEN OVERLOOKED AND DESERVES BETER PRESS BUT HIS MUSIC SPEAKS FOR ITSELF.

  • Thanks for posting this video! If you are watching close, this video is a freakin McAlpine Gold mine of info and learning right here! I always said whenever I need a new Musical direction, or Ideas on how to really open up my playing, I just pop in a TJM record and always always hear something new and cool in ANY of his recordings The guy just manages to incorporate so many musical colors into a single song and gets away with it. Thing of beauty! Cheers, IC.

  • Someone has been listening to Mr. Lane

  • Looks like I may have to pick up "Maximum Security" and check out what I've been missing for all of these years.

  • I ALLWAY'S SAID THIS GUY ROCKED \M/ ;)

  • I love how the guy asks him to do it slower and he plays about 2 or 3 notes slower and then goes up to the same pace he was going before

  • "Maximum Security".............enough said.

  • don't think hes mastered this instrument? Go listen to oversea evolution u half witted twat.

  • 6:12 to 6:22 - That's not possible!!!

  • My God why are people like him only getting 20k views when Kirk fucking wahmet gets a million? Phenomenal guitarist.

  • @TensaZangetsu814 Because Britney, like Kirk, gets millions of views while Ella Fitzgerald or Joni Mitchell get hundreds or thousands. Imbeciles, idiots and morons far outnumber people with high IQs. Metallica is garbage for retards, so why are you surprised?

  • this guy is so underrated i can't believe it

  • 6:14 amazing!!!

  • awesome

  • what stuff use Tony in this video ??

  • is that Tiger Woods??? lol just kiddin'

  • Awesome!!!!!!!!

  • copies shawn lane

  • @RockGuitarist07 Yep even tho Tony released albums years before shawn was famous. dumbass

  • This is gonna sound racist: a black guy who can play technical stuff and not just the blues?!?! Holy shit!

  • just off the top of my head... Rocky George, Stanley Jordan, George Benson, Greg Howe, Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian, Victor Wooten & his brother (can't remember his name), Vernon Reid, and I'm sure there are more.

Tony is one of the best 'shredders' period, regardless of race.

  • @drax13 exactly. Tony is a beast on the guitar. race has nothing to do with. he is one of the best, PERIOD!!!

'Maximum Security' is a classic neo-classical shred record, and 'Evolution' is a great mix of that with fusion.

  • @jordaniac89 you should hear tosin abasi ohmy is he amazing

  • @jordaniac89 I'm half black and have been playing Neoclassical and shred stuff for 15 years

  • @jordaniac89 Also check out Vernon Reid and Greg Howe

  • Tony is such a cool guy..and of course he can play the f@#k out of a six string..

  • one handed arpeggios? thats the secret! lol

  • Yeah becker would have crushed him arpeggio wise but Macalpine has got him owned on melody/scales etc. even tho he loves the Chinese scales in Cacophony with Marty (who is poo btw ;))

  • becker owned on melody? yeah right buddy! he's VERY emotional in his music

  • Lol not saying he ain't emotional but his melodies weren't as strong and memorable imho :s

  • is that the same Carvin Jason Becker used i think it is but he had a custom neck and headstock

  • Hes one of the best sweepers in my opinion. I would like to see him and Jason Becker have a 'sweep-off'.... if that makes sense.

Anyway this guy rocks, im gonna check out some more of his stuff. \m/

  • becker wins everyday

  • what the fuck is he doing???? amazing...

  • wut kind of guitar is he ripping ?

  • carvin. definatley a signature model

  • Not a signature model I think, it's a DC though...

  • hahah it's funny that tony looks at the interviewer all the time, after he makes a lick hahahaha

  • he totally ripped off shawn lane with that diminished lick

  • No he didn't ! Shawn did not invent the diminished scale or the concept of triads in tapping. Shawn simply did it faster than everyone else (lol)

  • @HEREoverHERE and without tapping

  • MacAlpine talks fast, but plays faster.

  • babayaga77: Tony Mac can play perfectly with a clean tone. Just because he is amazing doesn't mean he shouldn't use effects.

  • still dont understand why such an excellent guitar player as t mcalpine is touring like " thesecond" guitar player like steve vai, not the lead guitar player as he deserves

  • Cuz their mate's, he's having a lot of fun doing it, making more money than if he was touring solo, and still getting a lot of the lime light. I know what your saying, he's truely godly, one of my alltime faves. But there's nothing wrong with being Vai's right hand man. Take his last one, Kaneally. He too was absolutely incredible. When i went to see them in Manchester, he did a guitar solo, comprising of only using his little finger. I was like W T F?????

  • Vai's a dick!

  • Vai is a dick your right, but he's an incredible guitar player / song writer.

  • Yeah, Tony Mac is better than Vai

  • I wouldn't say so. Vai does a lot things that T Mac don't do. But he has been proven faster than vai.

  • He plays keyboards equally as good as he does guitar. He's totally mastered both instruments. You need to hear his 1st to albums "Edge Of insanity" & "Maximum Security" to get the jist of what he does.He is highly underrated and deserves a lot more success .

  • Come on, i wouldn't call Tony over-rated.. how many people do you know who actually know who he is. And i bet you my whole bank account you've never listened to his first 2 albums, maximum security in particular.

  • Haha. You said that just to rile guys on the thread. Your remark would amaze me if you really believed it, though. It's actually kinda' funny to me.

  • Overrated = more successful than you deserve to be. Tony is an incredible player and still only has a handful of guitar-geek fans. How in the world can he be overrated? To be overrated you need to be successful. Kirk Hammet and the like. Either way, Tony is described as a neo-classical/progressive guitarist in pretty much all cases, that's his main thing. And yes he's versatile but to say master of none is a completely different thing. You don't seem to have heard much of his music.

  • @C7Blackjack Kirk Hammett is not more successful than he deserves to be, because he is part of metallica. You can't overrate music that they write. There are millions of damn skilled guitarrists, all of them can't be successful.

  • you are completely wrong.

  • Awesome playing....especially the string skipping stuff towards the end....awesome

  • tony plays so fluently his mistake would be a new way of playing for some people lol

  • JackSmith07, a viewer and harsh critic of, an instructional video?! Dude, I understand that this is only your opinion, and well, you know how the saying goes, but you sound like you have the "perfection" thing down pat that it may have put a damper on YOUR wittle ole' ego, don't ya think? But anyway, who am I to criticize such lame comments that make egotistical viewers like JackSmith07 look like the one who's ego is being challenged with this video wittle ole' video. Grow up dude.

  • does anyone know where to find the g3 video where I think vai is playing than that kid he's teaching joins in, than Billy Sheehan joins in than McAlpine joins in and than they start picking on each others instruments while still playing. I think it was on the G3 dvd with Malmsteen does anyone know what Im talking about?

  • I think that might be the G3 with Yngwie but it might also be the Steve Vai live at the Astoria DVD as well. The part your talking about is so sick.

  • You are an idiot. Even some of the greatest multi diciplined guitarist credit Tony Macalpine as one of the most fluid and talented musicians they have ever worked with. Joel your not crazy you are just an idiot.

  • (mis)spoken by someone who can't do a bit of what tony can.

  • Replies like yours actually need to be video-replies so you can show us how much cleaner you are then Tony MacAlpine.

  • Underestimated guitarist

  • Underestimated guitarist

  • Why does everyone need delay. Try playing all that on an acoustic with steel 13gauge strings.

  • An acoustic guitar with 13gauge strings defeats the whole point of the style...

  • The style of what? Of over-delaying so that any and all mistakes become inaudible? Delay effects are such a lazy way out of perfecting the solo. And as far as instruction goes, it's really just an ego trip for the teacher to use that much delay.

  • Neo-classical,shred, whatever you like. The guy has his thing. Maybe you would be better to geek out with Al di meola...who also has his thing.

  • And this guy's thing could easily be adopted into Al di meolas thing. But I sincerely doubt the reverse.

But if you want to justify everything with relativity then I guess thats just. . . .your thing.

Maybe I will stick the head of my guitar up a horses ass and that will be my thing. With enough delay it should sound pretty good.

  • JackSmith07, you probably don't know who Tony MacAlpine is! Cause if you knew it, you probably haven't never said those things! Just for the record. Guitar is the 3rd instrument of MacAlpine, he is also well trained and virtuoso into erudite piano and violin.

  • this guy might be a god. that doesnt justify the tasteless and gratuitous use of delay. this is an instructional video not a rock concert

  • your a fool

  • holy shit. you backed-paged this videoin order to read a comment i left over 2 years ago. Buddy you need to get a fucking life or simply kill yourself. You are truly pathetic.

  • thats what the comments are here for you stupid nigger

  • @normalisforlosers is The besT

  • This is a lot of delay, but find other videos of Tony and there isn't so much. Also, even though I've never seen him play acoustic, I have no doubt that he can. Players of his calibre didn't get there by only practising on electric for 15 years.

  • Awesome!

  • mcalpine and morello: Brothers?

  • oh i know

  • hahahaha...conspirisy?

  • HEY HEY!! Ex. 9 is superb..Where was this recorded?? looks like someones bedroom?? vey cool anyway, thanx

  • wooow
