  • Anyone else realise that the historians where the ones playing the Romans?

  • I hope that senior lecturer is still at Sandhurst when I get there!

  • Is this game (RTW) any good? I've never played any RTS games before, is it a good place to start?

  • @jeevesthepunk it is really good, i would get it before any other of the TW games

  • @TheWillSter57 I dunno man, Shogun 2 is really great, definitely the best one so far. Medieval 2 is right behind it in my opinion.

  • @jeevesthepunk its a great game.

  • All the time I am thinking...your horses ..what about your horses?! Make them do something..they are coming at you with spears ffs...run..skip...jump...fly...do something......and now they're dead

  • Hannibal's tactics don't work in RTW. First, there is no gradual pullback. Second, It is designed to be played fast, each battle only lasting 10~15 mins. This means No matter what you do, Carthage army will be broken before cavalry can envelope Grand Roman Army. in this clip Roman army was clearly controlled by another gamers, there is no way they will engage supririor carthage cavalry with pure cavalry. RTW AI is stupid, but they know how to count.... tad bit disappointed.

  • So fake.... They should have put that glib 'professional' guy at commanding position and tell him to do what he bragged about. In ROTW, armies cannot step backward(they should turn around to move backwards) which means once you draw back from the battling front Carthage infantry is slaughtered.

Any people who read some history can explain Hannibal's tactics as that prof guy did. The problem is, how the hell is he going to hold Rome infantry when gradually pulling back simply doesn't work in TW?

  • did they do anything at all during this episode?

  • How do you expect them to command when they're not even the ones operating the computer? They're really like generals asking the runners (computer operators) to take these commands to their people. It's easier to play RTW because you're the one operating, but imagine asking a player not skilled in RTW to do the operating but having you to tell him what to do. Not fun.

  • @IanSumallo no, the ppl who are ACUTALLY playing it know what they are doing, but they only DO what the ppl (non skilled ppl) are telling them to do

  • hate the people in these episodes, how hard is it to win a battle of rtw, they just stood and watched their men get flanked and omg is it so hard to have a simple tactic or atleast do SOMETHING!

  • I love this version of the battle of Cannae :)

  • I wana this show again!

  • Wow, what crap lol I won't dislike though... It's not your fault they suck :D

  • im chuffed withmyself cuz what i thought of doing was exactly what hannibal did. after all my m8 won the rome total war championships.

  • @TheGamingGinge there was championships? damn i would LOVE to be in that, and yeah, i do that alot as well, unless they turtle up,then i just use skirmish calvary to gode them into attacking my hoplites then use legionarys to smash there flanks and then have heavy calvary attack there rear :D, its pretty damn effective againist turtle armys and if pulled of quickly can make a enemy army surrender

  • @xxdomoxxkunxx haha thats a clssic technique, but higher end players wont be lured. Sometimes youve got to hit two birds with one stone and sneak something around while the opponents had their eyes on ur distraction. Remember once their cavalry are gone than you have a great chance of winning the game. However, a simple rear charge isnt as effective as it used to be.

  • @TheGamingGinge true, but i mostly fought against the AI which usually fell for it, though ive had plenty of stratgeys to use, i used that one for the basic infantry only armies of the gauls or lower end greeks, ive used alot of unorthordox ideas in my planning, and i never have a mental script of what to do, each battle is unique, but i do know the values of what beats what, but my plans essentially go with what im going against and what i have opposed to instead of a set mind set for engaging

  • damn I know how to win that!

  • 'Right, i don't think we can use them'.

    That's an understatement...

  • nooooooobs

  • I swear that two full units of equites would mash one unit of nubian cavalry in normal circumstances, especially because they charged anyday.

  • If only they'd used the cavalry for flank attacks against the hastati they'd have had it in the bag. For beginners they did a really good job though.

  • ( lol ) Good show. I wish Lynette would stop throwing the pieces while describing the battle though :-). Thanks for uploading.

  • I remeber when i was the Romans, vs The British, I had 3 Legions and 1 Horsmen group, they had Charties And the warband (I think that's what there called) They had pretty much 5X the amount i did, i used the forests and some how won, i charged their untis and they retreated!

  • @Ethan15811 the british warbands come in masses, but if you put some decent legionaries against em or princeps even they quickly run...brits are weak asses if you fight em the right way ;)

  • you cut parts out of this one :( please try to upload the entire episodes

  • Those people here didnt look like they had to mcuh of a chance on this one...they looked so hopelessly outnumbered it didnt matter to much what they did. Ofc, not knowing what to do from the start didnt help them any.......this is an ugly ass whoopin'.

  • hmmmm...does this version of Rome Total War have a less advanced AI than the released version?

  • @Falconpunch82 there is no ai, the enemy is a person behaving like the general of the peroid

  • @SovietSquirel lol...where did they get their "enemy", then?

  • is legand :}

  • The people they had on were bad enough to annoy and frustrate people who actually love ancient and military history, and fostered little interest in the general public

  • @WojekSiren

That guy is Dr Aryeh (now Lynette) Nusbacher. And yeah, he was the guy I remembered from this show originally since he gets into his explanations :P

  • lol I love how one of the proffessionals pushes troops in neatly and the other one just chucks them everywhere.

  • By the time the generals are done talking their army is defeated.

  • there not really fighting amazing Roman Legions they fighting Hastai like the lowest form of Roman Infantry if they were fighting Urban Cohorts then they would be wiped out in seconds.

  • @MTCoblivsicas12345

except the urban cohorts in the game are totall bull crap. The Real Urman cohorts were a heavy duty police force and they werre no better than regular legionaries.

  • I want to know the historian guy in the glasses name?

  • @WojekSiren i dunno but he was really getting into it when explaining what happend

  • Sorry but it's indeed one of the worst explanations of this battle I've ever seen...

  • did anyone see the episode when general de la billiaire commander in chief of british forces in first gulf war played alexander yhe great andbeat the storming normon shzwarshcowz who played hannibal barca that wassomething to see 2 real generals with a real and first hand knolage go head 2 head exellent stuff

  • @crazykid606 sounds cool, do you have a link?

  • Comment removed

  • I hate when that historian with the glasses always ruins the whole strategic overview by throwing blocks around. And he does it every time he's there. Infuriating...

  • they should of used there pikemen to make a line to rape the romans as they come if without them even being touched then use the Spanish swordsman to protect the flanks.

  • they should've had the prince of macedon and the heirofcarthage in there... would've bin alot more interesting, those people know what they are doing, these people dont have a fucking clue even what a pike is

  • @tecna64

Interesting more like boring and one sided. The point of getting random people is to not let skill come into play and see if people with little info and skill can win.

  • I used to love this programme and was gutted when the BBC cancelled it. You fools BBC

  • iv just noticed they used the house of the julii romans rather than the historic house of scipii romans for this battle. tut tut

  • @Srev656 historic house of scipii? actually rome wasnt devided in 4 factions like in RTW, they were ONE unified republic, the julii and scipii (if the names are even correct) were just noble roman families among many. i dont know why they did this but its completly wrong. its not your fault, this game is bullshitting everyones sense of history. rome's empire was indeed devided, in eastern and western but that was centuries after this battle happened. great game, just dont learn history from it.

  • @Baller0047 Which is why you should only play the EB mod :D

  • he's having a fun time with those blocks isn't he?

  • It's a game! Why do they take it so seriously? Who cares that they're spanish?

  • The engine is not capable of simulating how Hannibal won (romans squishing themselves so they couldn't move and fight), I doubt these guys could of won no matter how smart they were. Surrounding that huge army may increase killing efficiency but not enough to win let alone repeat Hannibal's massacre.

  • What they should have done with this program is get experienced players who can explain what they're doing. All we're seeing is some idiots screwing up a battle. Bring on the PrinceOfMacedon!

  • Well you don't ned experience in video gaming or military strategy. Some basic knowledge about history should do. Cannae is such a famous battle and Hannibals strategy of outflanking and surrounding is equally famous. I learned about it at 6th or 7thngrade at school! How could those people not have heard about it?

  • i love how goldsworthy tries to keep the table organized and this other guy is like a 4 year old throwing bricks left and right

  • god dammit, shoulda let me take command of one of those armies i woulda OWNED!

  • wow hannibal... i never thought roman arms would be defeated by a simple box, pincer strike- followed by the hammer and anvil.... i was wrong XD

  • this would be awesome if they had of used europa barbarorum mod...

  • does the guy get really pissed off at 6:03?

  • i think a roman bite him as a child

  • Comment removed

  • What a brilliant comander hanibal was to use a Roman armies own strength against them. Briliant!

Scipio did the same thing to him at Zama however.

  • i am about to watch the episode on marathon if the guys playing fail THAT then they suck balls

  • It's worth keeping in mind that the players they bring in for this show are specifically chosen to have no video gaming experience (which would usually exclude them from having any military strategic experience at all, unless they come from a tabletop wargame background or are military buffs, which would probably get them screened out as well). So they're doing the best they can under the circumstances.

  • ooohh.....i thought sooo o_0

  • It's still painfull to watch from the avrage Total War-veteran. ;(

  • @petkol

    true ;)

  • @petkol yeah awful micro by them

  • @ArcaneAzmadi I'm amazed they gave them Cannae to fight anyway - it was damn near miraculous that Hannibal, a man bred for war and generalship by his expert father, Hamilcar, won it at all. How a bunch of unschooled amateurs are supposed to win it is beyond me.

  • @SargonofAkkad100 I agree, Cannae, is unfair to anyone who hasn't played RTW or has historically knowledge of the battle. EVEN if you know what really happened unless you can time it perfectly (something which is not practical unless you control the battle yourself) 99 times of 100 they would fail

Think about what they see, a large plain with little to no advantages and a roman army twice your size. Very daunting, especially since proper cavalry use is rare among the contestants on the series.

  • what happened to the huge cav advantage they won at the start????

  • Lol.

These guys have no idea of how to press home any advantage.

  • They didn't know how to use it. They didn't even try to flank around the legions with their cav. They just let them stand in place while the infantry walked into them.

    VERY bad idea.

  • Man, you bitches have to understand, they choose normal citizens for this show, not TW addicts like myself.

  • it pisses me off witnessing this faliure:P Ive pulled of a cannae a coupple of times myself playing RTW, as the romans VS carthage was my best one though rofl and it happend by accident=P I got all the carthaginians trapped inside a "ball" of about 2K troops I didnt know abt the details of the battle of cannae then though I went bragging on the rtw forums where some1 told me that I had pulled of a perfect cannae I wish they had used some1 familiar w atleast the basics for this show.

  • Yeah it kills me too lol. I've never played Cannae. Is it a historical battle preset in RTW?

  • no its not=P U could do it w a custom battle I suppose. or if some mod has it.

u should automaticly get it right if u lure most of the enemy to your center(wich has to be weak) and then just move up your stronger units at their flanks its eventually turn into a "V" its easyer when seriously outnumbered and when youre on some campaign with a single stack. The units you have like 25-50 guys left on u deploy in the centre and the stronger u have on the flnks.

  • i kowe what you mean

  • Aryeh: "come into my box". How prophetic...and pathetic.

    thesun(dawt)co(dawt)uk/sol/homepage/news/article27762.ece

  • man they let the romans flank there phalanx. well they messed up. they let there fforces be massed and libians be destroyed earley

  • Carthage could magicaly make some sacred band groups lol

  • They're like little kids playing with those blocks when they are explaining how it really happened.

    Sad people.

  • jajaja if this are tactics... they are totally looser

  • tsk tsk Carthage should have used a crescent shaped formation and tried to envelope the romans and Hannibal should have a trait LogisticalExpert +3 morale so that Carthaginian line would not break that easily XD

  • I'm not really surprised at how badly they did. Cannae is a hard ass battle. It's clearly not for amateurs.

  • i wish they called ME to be their general, i would have fought agaist these idiots and i would have got a "HEROIC VICTORY" like i did in the real game

  • That's why you'd never be selected for a show like this. Looking for average people to command, not TW fanatics.

  • It wouldn't be hard to beat any other the people who take part in this show.

Honestly, I haven't seen any of the episodes with a decent commander.

  • why they waste so much time with playing a videogame and at the end they show the real battle with blocks?

  • MAN THEY SUCK!!!! how bad a commander he would have been if he were Hannibal. He would have been killed while wondering "how should I form my army?". Pathetic. And they are supposed to keep people safe, if I'm not wrong.

  • The guy who destroyed the blocks is a very smart guy, why he has to throw the blocks around like a child..and worst of all he did not explain everything :/ Such waste.

  • Defeat!! Noobsauces!!

  • Hannibal was a fuckin good general to be fair

  • The Battle of Cannae is one of the hardest battles to win, from the Carthaginian side, if you don't know exactly what to do and how to use your units. And this team was probably the worst team ever to appear on the show.

Time Commanders should have put this team in command of the Roman army instead.

  • As far as anyone has worked out the only other way to have won the battle is to have used a time catapult to transport rifles to the Carthaginians. It was a truly epic win on all counts.

  • Omg what tactical thinking for the men who are in control of carthage lol they say omg look how many romans we will all gona die!!!lol better to put real generals in control of such armies.Stupid lietunants and generals xD.Lol the lego guy didnt actually shown us well the formations he just crashed everyong in one block xD

  • BBC really missed a chance with this show. Instead of picking random Joe's who have no idea about these battles, about what spearmen are and are pretty sure to loose. They could have much better picked real generals, who can explain their tactics and do something interesting.

Instead of people who have no idea and are making blunder after blunder.

  • prince of macedon would be a good candidate

  • are you talkin about the guy who plays rome total war online?

  • yea the one who makes alot of videos

  • Thats a brilliant idea actually. I know there are at least 10 generals/ex-generals in the UK alone, and of course BBC have their American ties which would bring in more generals.

Why aint you working for the BBC? :D

  • Thank you very much. I am flattered :D

I can kinda follow their logic in choosing their format. They wanted to have regular joe's, so that a larger audience could relate to the people on tv.

I am afraid though that in their drive to appeal to a larger audience and choosing this specific subject they have fallen short of attracting the attention of either the regular joes (historic battles are boring for them) or from the history buffs (who are not interested in seeing people blunder)

  • Oh, aye. But that said it did get enough views and good ratings for a second series :D

I just wish they sold a box set for it.

  • As I remember, I did once see while idly flipping through the channels either Time commanders or that one from the History channel where there were two British generals fighting some sort of historic battle. I can't remember any more details of it.

Imagine how cool it would be if you could actually play their version of the game. With ten thousands of soldiers and no lag :D

  • I play version called Roma Surrectum which is far better than the version used on TV. The only difference is the computers.

Time commanders uses 7 separate computers to run the game.

2 computers are up front for the captain's "controller guys" to use, 2 are out back for the enemy generals to use, 1 is a larger server than is hosting the game which uses the base feature that is used to run the RTW multiplayer. And the 2; Big screen; Control table.

TC is an MP game with 4 Players and 3 Specs :)

  • Ahh cool. I figured that it must have been one supercomputer :P

    The mod looks quite nice.

  • Och, no.

Using one big PC would have actually taken up more CPU space than using the MP system on Time Commanders.

And ya, Roma Surrectum is THE best mod out, and if you're thrown by the slightly lacking historical accuracy, don't worry, when they release RS2.0 it will be twice as historically accurate as even the EB mod :3

But that said, the mod holds so much. I've been playing it for a while and even last night one of the battles blew me away with it's brilliance :D

  • Twice as historically accurate as EB?

If I may express my doubt, EB does have professional historians with PhDs in their team. :P

  • Aye, but so does the RS mod 2 ;)

But regardless, EB is far less playable that even the early version of RS.

But RS 2, maybe the historical accuracy of EB and Playable? Why argue? ;)

  • Curious, how is EB so unplayable in your opinion?

  • Well, in a majority opinion it is too bugged and laggy for many people with average PCs to play.

But don't take my word for it, go visit the TWC forums ;)

  • My computer's 3-4 years old (and it was a medium priced computer then) and it runs EB just fine. O.o

Only bugs I've run into are minor bugs caused by R:TW itself and not EB (the EB team and commmunity have done pretty extensive bug squashing with patch *.* fixes getting implemented in the next patch).

The only things that really annoy me in EB are campaign and battle AI (can't be modded), diplomacy (can't be modded) and siege battles (pathfinding and other silliness - can't be modded).

  • Whatever you say.

    Good luck with it ;-)

  • You do realise Time Commanders is just Rome Total War.

    What a dick.

  • There's no need to be hostile...

And for your information Time Commanders does use an edited version of the RTW engine, not Rome itself.

  • @R3D00d Its a TW with human assisted AI, that is pretty clear. TW AI is very stupid and there is 2 ways to exterminate Roman forces: 1. using Hannibal tactics, 2. using computer AI weaknesses.

  • Eh, Rome Total Realism is a better mod.

  • Thank you, Mr Irrelevant.

  • That could be better. But at the same time most generals have studied battles of the past. Cannae is a great example of this because it has such a specific strategy to victory, not good troops, tight formation, orderly combat. Hannibal was actually pretty clever on his part with the box maneuver. But any general would already know the greatness of Hannibal Barca. And if they had to fight Cannae, or Plataea, or even Gaugamela again. They could just imitate their originals.

  • True, but I don't expect that to be a problem. Those battlefield tactics only worked, because the enemy general did not expect it. In this case both generals will be aware of the historical battle and as such will seek new ways to suprise and outsmart each other.

No two battles are ever the same.

  • @Arjakuru I think I remember an episode where the Sandhurst guy and a couple of ancient warfare experts took to it and did well, but seeing as they'd all been experts on the show they probably practiced first. To be honest though, my memory of that is so hazy that it might not even have happened. Nothing to see here.

  • @Arjakuru ye thats why Prince of Macedon should of done this he would of done this easiley

  • @Arjakuru Yeah, but everybody who's interested in military history knows those battles and their tactics. But eventually there could have been "what if..." battles or they could command the faction that has lost and now have to try to lead them to victory!

  • @Arjakuru Not really. I take your point but any general worth their salt would know these battles inside-out - they study Hannibal, Caesar, Napoleon et al, so what would be the point?

  • @Arjakuru Well the problem is that real generals know what historically would've worked. So any real general would know about the double-envelopment strategy and that it would work well against the Romans.

  • The enemy army in these battles isn't AI controlled, they have a separate operator who controls it.

This is one of the very few TC battles which was very hard for the team controlling the Carthegenians. Yes it would be easy to re-create Hannibal's tactics, but just by the game dynamics when comparing unit strengths, the numbers the Romans had in this battle, and having to issue orders back and fourth between several people instead of personally controlling the units it's pretty hard to win.

  • they werent decisive in their moves they doubted themselves every step of the way and they let the sheer size of the roman army unnerve them your right a baby should have been able to beat the AI

  • Why did Time Commanders never do the Battle of Zama? That would have been interesting.

  • this roman generals are in my opinion not good, they have troops in the enemy's back, but he doesn't attack... WTF?

  • Is this episode cut up as it seem disjointed, does not flow properly and is nothing like the other episodes. If it is cut up has any one up loaded this episode in its entirety

  • 6:24 , poor guy , his mom probably never bought him lego ;( hes making up for it now.

  • I wonder how the romans generals got their rank? they simply charged into a big trap.

  • The Tribune that commanded them was horrifically arrogant, and thought that the Roman Hammer would be able to smash Hannibal's thin forces. Unfortunately, Hannibal drew in the Roman infantry force and used their cavalry to cut off their flanks and surround the Romans on all sides.

If the other tribune were there, he might have taken the battle a little more cautiously

  • Yes, but i mean: in history you can find a lot of generals and officer that were terrible in strategy, but how the hell did they become general of an army?

  • My apologies. Well, to explain that point, it is necessary to point out that appointment to rank more often than not is based on social norms rather than merit. In fact, appointment via merit is a social norm, in and on itself. Consuls like Varro were often elected based on popularity or political influence rather than their ability. The majority of decent strategists had to assert themselves rather than conform to the political system, such as Gaius Octavius

  • simple. they were consuls and you became consul by having a lot of money.

    problem with the romans

  • i think those generals are both idiots

  • i would have owned all of these ppl if they were using rome and i had carthage....phalanx always go in the center so they have flank protection by close combat melee troops...but w/e lol

  • Yeah in Rome that worked, but in real life Hannibal would've been crushed that way. He thinned out his centre for the reason of tempting the romans to try to crush through his centre rather than using their superiour numbers to outflank him. Had he put his Phalanx in the centre and the weak troups to protect the flanks, the romans would've taken over the flanks and attack the phalanx from the rear. Using the Phalanx as reserve flanking units was a great move actually.

  • Which was gone out the window by season 2.

  • lmao the guy with the glasses is such a maniac with those blocks ))

  • he always does military channel specials

  • they should have played another game to see if Hanabals strategy would have worked. I bet the Romans would have won again...

  • well its kind of strange they say "we attempt to change history" since they usually put the players in control of the historic victor,so the only way they could "change history" is by the having the team lose >:P

  • i agree, i tried it on Rome Total War and it didnt work at all.

  • Nubs they should let me play there insteed :P

  • Where is the pause button when you need it XD

  • They are so bad. Wow there's no way you can have reserves when you are outnumbered like this, not only that, they allowed the Romans to attack them first.

They should have real Rome Total War players take care of this. Jesus

  • thankyou loads for publishing these!!

  • Your welcome.

  • dude they suck...

  • True..

  • hannibal must be rolling in his grave

  • hahaha the summary at the end was funny as hell

  • yes that advisor is a bit barbaric when showing how the Libyans fight

  • "Just start killing em, SLAUGHTER SLAUGHTER SLAUGHTER!"

He really seemed to be enjoying himself, playing with those blocks.

  • Your the best!

  • Thanks ;)

  • Thanks for the upload!

  • No problem :)

  • Hannibals my favorite general XD... ah cant blame them for losing tho they wer up against such well armed numbers, with a melancholy terrain that doesnt favour them and lik said theyre no Hannibal but still they did do a good attempt altho i think the cause of their ultimate defeat was their disorganised lines if they were more solidified they coulda halted the roman line more

  • they needed more input from the team, like in the later episodes.

  • they lost how he won in the real time what happened to their cavarly?

  • Looks like the team sent them head-on instead of flanking like Hannibal did.

  • Rather they managed to complete their first objective (defeat enemy calvary) but failed to maintain their defense line
