This is what gliding is all about, not that " is the feeling of flying like a bird", if you want to fly like a bird, jump off a buiding and flap your arms.
@jtmedina75 LOL! I completely forgot about how rough it was with the storm still trying to spit me out by spinning me. Glad I could laugh at it instead of freezing because it was quite a ride at that point still trying to find the core of the lift in that area. Fun remembering. Thanks for watching. Bruno
I'm happy that you were in that situation and not me.
There where so much noise and it shaked you so extremly but you were concentrated. I do not know if I could bring the glider out of this weather like you did.
How was the landing after that ?
There have to be extremly squalls near the ground.
@bolowke666 Thanks for watching. I was able to continue on with the task and landed back at the Logan airport 3 hours and a few hundred miles later. Glider racing and what you can accomplish on a single flight still just blows my mind. I am glad I didn't have to land around there because you are right, it would have been pretty nasty on the ground. Take care. Bruno
Hey Bruno! An amazing video like always! I hope to go solo on my 16th in 4 months time and I already have some flight time in glider, have you got any tips/pointers for going solo?
@ItsRhysFTW Thanks for the comment. You are getting close! Congrats :) The best advice is to just try to relax and enjoy every minute of your first solo. It is terrifying and wonderful at the same time. I hope your instructor will let you soar a little if you catch a thermal. My first solo ended up being 45 minutes because I didn't want to come down and the thermals were popping. :) Good luck, have fun and be safe! Bruno
@protector440 Great question. Modern glider cockpits are so comfortable that you feel great even after being in one for 6-7 hours. You are very reclined and I haven't felt sore at all after a long flight in my ASW-20. That said, after 4-5 hours riding in the back seat of a Duo Discus I have been quite stiff. Bruno
@omarbadr36 Its the circular column of airspace around a certain point on the ground, that gliders have to be into for at least 2 seconds or so, during a gliding competition. compare it with competition sailing, where the boats have to go around buoyies, a turning cylinder is like a buoy.. So during a competition flight the gliders have to around several turning cylinders, the one that flies the fastest and also farthest, wins.. Well that is it basically, there are some variations to it
@roelesch I have some crazy looking prototype winglets that required cutting 16 inches off each wing to mount. The net result has been some outstanding increases in both climb and high speed cruise. Yes, sounds too good to be true but my best 5 days in this year's 15 meter nationals against amazing gliders and pilots resulted in these day rankings: first, third, sixth, eighth and tenth. The people who made these for me used my ship as a test bed and now are putting them on business jets. Bruno
@roelesch Sure, the designer is a NASA engineer named "Dave" and the people who built them and modified the ship are York Zentner and John Neel out of Utah. Really great guys, amazing craftsmen and they both fly/race gliders and love them as much as we do. They currently have a set of these winglets being tested on an ASG29. These guys are for real. Bruno
Wow... intense competition flying!! I've seen thunderstorms at the WGC, they really look frightening, especially when lightning strikes the ground just in front of you... you made the right decisions and made the best out of the situation. You needed that 11 knotter... :) Good job!
Bruno, I admire your ability to NOT swear like a sailor when the thermal teases you. I couldn't post a video from my cockpit during a flight without bleeping a lot of the audio out! It's awesome when you 'hook up' at the 19 minute point!
Running with mother natures big dogs there boy.at least you have learned to keep your speed on when trying to climb in turbulent conditions, any slower you would not have had enough control to correct being flipped over.
Sporting an ipaq 3835. Those things where ahead of their time when they where made. Glad to see that their still useful. I had an ipaq 3835, but stopped using it 6 years ago or so.
Amazing video. Around the 17 minute mark I thought the pilot was going to have to ditch.

The wingspan measured in meters. 15 meters equals around 16 yards

What is that shift-thing to your left?
TheKeyWestian 1 month ago
@TheKeyWestian It is the flaps. In gliders we often use flaps much more than in airplanes. Thanks for watching. Bruno

What does the "15-meter" mean?
Nice video, man that was wild!

Oh boy!Skillful or reckless?I don't judge over that.
These weather conditions can be "dangerous".
But you keep focussed and you have my respect ! Spectaculair video for sure.
