I can tell you i have the same issue, its not hard drive related cause i have an SSD and i still experience that sound whilst booting and resuming the OS X Lion
Dude I would back it up, because I had a Seagate 250GB (2.5) in my notebook. Since I installed Windows in it, everything was working perfectly but after 2 weeks later, it won't let me run Windows, I saw the blue screen pop up for less than a second and then restarted. Then I reinstalled Windows again then 3 days later when I left it on, came back to the room and found out it was restarted. Then I heard like the drive had trouble reading, so I got myself a Western Digital 320GB Hard Drive.
my hitachi in my macbookpro doesn't make that problem. I was thinking of upgrading to this hard drive and watching this video has put me off. I'm going to postpone upgrading until i can find a drive that wont make dumb noises.
mine has same problem, I took it to the apple store today, they said it could be the HD, they changed it... and it still makes that noise... and theeeen he said it's normal and the computer is perfectly fine. that still bothers me.... we pay billions of dollars in a mac and we get a flea behind our ear.
You can't get coverage for something that most likely isn't a problem. The noises heard in this video are quite normal for harddrives as they release or park their heads. The sounds themselves are NOT indicative of a problem as it's designed to park the heads if the drive isn't working in order to save power. Only if you hear these sounds in quick succession (indicative of head tracking errors), or in conjunction with the computer seizing up briefly etc could you be experiencing ACTUAL problems.
That noise comes from the optical drive, that superdrive drive makes the noise everytime I open or close the lid on my Macbook Aluminum (Late 2008). It's always been like that and Apple's Geniuses can't give me amn answer on how to make it stop. I know the noise comes from the top right corner of the Macbook base, that's where the optical drive is located; the HD lays at the bottom left side...
I too upgraded the laptop to a 500GB WD Scorpio Blue
There might be a solution called hdapm. This app keeps the hard drive from trying to put the head into the parking position. There is also a counter that raises by one with every try...and many hard drives allow 500.000 to 600.000 cycles...my seagate had 260.000 after about a year and a half or so. Try google it...or reply to me. I wrote a script I run at the system startup...could send it to you...
I have this same sound on my new 15 MBP. My hard drive appears to be a seagate ST9500420ASG. Have you figured out anything else in regards to this behavior? Has the sound continued? The symptoms match exactly what you describe and what the video sounds like.
I heard something about upgrading drive firmware. I doubt that's it. I'm starting to think this is more of an Apple problem than a drive issue. Could it have something to do with the sudden motion sensor?
I have the same drive, and I hear the same sound sometimes when waking my (early 2006) MacBook Pro from sleep. I backup every day; the rest is in god's hands.
I here the superdrive noise and also i here the other noise clicking sound. The problem I am having is a hard drive noise which is a light fan sound all the time. I also have the new macbook pro like yours.
I have made no progress here. I think this problem only happens in OSX though. I have never heard the sound in Boot Camp. Something makes me think its a software/firmware issue.

Hey!
Good news. I would like you to send me that script. I am having the exact same problem.
Oh, I'd be so grateful if it worked!

It's the hard drive heads parking and unparking. It's not a problem.
