Another tour de force that helped Stevie on the road to "Music of My Mind" and beyond. Like Marvin Gaye who developed his skill until he unleashed "What's Going On", these are songs that are the formative roots of a generation. Great post.
TAKE THAT AD OFF IN THE UPPER RIGHT CORNER UGLY STPID PINK SKINNED WHITE TRASH. BUSH WAS NO BETTER THAN OBAMA. BURN IN HELL STUPID RED NECK. CAN'T WAIT TO HELL FILL ITSELF WITH PINK PEIOPLE.
@heyathere1000 Obama is 1000 times better than Bushit ...Bushit and his Repubinazis are responsible for the conditions this country finds itself in today/....
@medesdaddy it nshows how much you don't know.they all inj the same club,obama,bush...to get up there with them you gotta sell your soul like obama did.stop being a hero worshiper.because obama is black you forgive him for selling his soul??? stop thinking 'black man',,,awake...and I'm not white
Well, LongliveHope2011, reportedly, Jesus said "I come quickly"... that was 2000 years ago.
It seems Jesus' definition of the word 'quickly' is somewhat different to that of the mortals he was reportedly speaking to.
Also, the Bible describes God as being a loving father. Let's see... disease, injury, depression, misfortune, natural disasters, poisonous animal, etc are all the reported creation of the God of the Bible. He doesn't sound very loving to me. More like a callous monster, really.
@slapupchrist Hey remember that 1000 years is like a day to the Lord. His timing is not our timing. Yet he said look for world chaos more and more frequently and then he may appear when you least expect it. Just an FYI
And, LongliveHope2011, (Soloman the supposed wisest man) , said that there is nothing new under the sun, and that "one generation cometh, and anther passeth away, but the Earth abideth forever". The point being that it's all been seen, said, done, thought, experienced, etc, before.
So, looking for a state for the world to be so that Jesus can get the whole thousand year reign under way, is pointless; nothing has changed other than the amount of time gone by.
Also, LongliveHope2011, if the Bible contains words that are reportedly inspired by God, then what's the point in reading it if the terms used (such as 'quickly') do not mean what we all know those words to mean?
It's like me writing a cooking book, and instead of using actual measurements and temperatures, I simply say "set your oven on hot", "add a lot of milk", and "cook it quickly".
I suppose there'd be 'experts' out there who'd try to decipher my meanings despite never having met me.
if donny hathaway hadnt been such a hit stevie would have never stepped his game up and sounded so damn good lol. competitiveness brings out the best i guess j/p
This song is as relevant today as it was back in 1970, nothing has changed, people are as greedy, selfish and racist as ever in America. America still defines herself by the amount of wars she wins. What a pity, Heaven Help Us All.
I remember loving this song in the early 70's in London. We have a complilation motown album. I played the crap out of it. And this song as well. Makes me cry when I hear it. The album also had "Still Waters, Run Deep" Check out that song!!
this song is so true. look at america today, im not a democrat. im a republican. but ii know we need god now more than ever for the fate of freedom is at stake. god bless america
oops...it was 1970. I was going on 15...yes I am an older man now but I tell you, I saw so many things that I thought was going forward but it all went backwards. Its really sad to see the fight for eqaulity etc. slide backwards, the drugs and fast money, corporate greed, the killing of our youths through drugs and internet, its all horrible. Yes, HEAVEN HELP US ALL! Stevie preach on....We need it!
Powerful, Powerful song by Stevie at the young age of 19. One of my favorites by him. I remember when this song was released I went and bought it. It was so, so truthful at that time even though I was all of maybe 13 going on 14 then in 1969.
Summer '70. We moved from Vice Lord territory to the 4 Corner Hustlers territory and man, I made it but i sure was glad when momma moved us out of there. but guess what? into the Cabrini Greens Housing Project where they killed like proffessionals.bilbo2shire
Bassplayershadow20: The thing that has been, is that which shall be, and that which is done, is that which shall be done. There is no new thing under the sun. Ecclesiastes 1:9.
I think this song is very prophetic. When Stevie first sung this song I could hardly think of a time more troubling than what we are living in now. I thought this song was mostly about the civil rights movement and the Viet Nam war. Who would have thought that 30 years later this song would have far more meaning than anyone could have known back then. Thanks for saving and sharing. Good work!!
I'm old school and yes I was around during the era this album came out...racism, violence, social injustice, including hate plenty of it going on... from some blacks as well as whites.
I started out looking for and listening to GEORIGA ME, happened upon some racist stuff and decided I needed a song to mellow me out before I go to bed since I really do love erbodedatloveme ! Thanks for this song Stevie
Hey Johnniewalker; what was soul purpose in this song? What really happen in 1969 thur 1971 that not only Mr. wonder but Jimmy X, and several other singer and groups voice thier opinion on?
@papabear196 Racial divide and discrimination were continuing to be exposed social justice. The vietnam War was still going on. Many Vets. were returning feeling lost and less than heroes. Once familiar urban streets were full of drugs. It was a time of constant protest. The women movement became more aggressive. Divorce was on the rise and the break down of the nuclear family structure. It was the years of letting it all hang out literally....
@papabear196 The war in vietnam, where we should NOT have ever been, 58,000 men and women died in that crap, that is what went on between 1961 thru 1975!!!!
@papabear196 I can tell you that I grew up in a family that NEVER thought that black men were any better than white men and that God loved all of his creations I can say this because the man that wrote this song was my great uncle.....his sister was my grandmother and when I listen to this song I cry because I BELIEVE this message.....We might be white but our white ain't might. It's our love that makes us right baby. This song and the soul purpose of all of us is to LOVE each other.
@papabear196 We were coming to the end of the most, terbulent decade, since the 40's . The "Vietnam Conflict" was on the News every night, We had just lost MLK, Bobby Kennedy. And Tricky Dick Nixon, was in the White House on the lie of "Peace". Unemployment was high, and the younger generation was tried of the Conservatives of their day who got us into that mess. Sound familiar?
this song was made and out during a time where war ,racial hated , social injustice was going on yes that was then but it remains what have us as Americans learn? this song can and should be played for today's generations and more to come good work Stevie as always
Pop music needs someone to be its conscience like people like Stevie Wonder were back in there time. Is anyone even trying? Maybe there are such people but the record companies won't hire anyone who sings like that anymore.
I'll give you Mary J., Nas, Common, and Will I Am. That would be a BIG no for the rest: Single Ladies, and Bootilicious crap somehow fails to raise my social consciousness! Songs that stand the test of time and are enlightening for generations to come, i.e. "What's Going On", etc. would fall into this category.
This is one the most intense songs ever made. The lyrics - just the most intense lyrics. Exposes, reveals. Bares all. All! So direct, so truthful. Uncovers. Makes it so clear. The song singing what we wish to make known, so we can conquer the wrongs, and lead the self to do the right. This is a HEALING song.
Stevie is so deep with his music. He is a musical genius. Stevie was on time with this song. However, I have to give it Sam Cook for breaking the mold for African Americans singing about the plight of the times with his beautiful song "A Chang Is Gonna To Come." But Stevie took it to new highs when he stepped into our world.
If you're under 40yrs, old I'm talking to you for a moment. Don't think you can always understand everything, because most of what Stevie is talking about, are things that you've never seen or lived, or could even imagine! Not that the song isn't still relevant, but as bad as things are right now, trust me there was a time when they were even worst. God bless anybody with the courage to tell the truth on a song back in that time and place! Love You Stevie....
Love how the pioneers made music that actually touched the lives of the people who listen to them. Cuz as lost as this world is, our only hope is heaven.
I'm totally and radically against any kind of religions....the don't fit for problems of the 21 century. BUT: als "LUVJONZ99" said: you gotta be remaining the time and the context....the line: Heaven help the boy who won't reach 21 - Heaven help the man who gave that boy a gun" is very impressive.

i dont understand why any of you people try to get your point across. with opinion comes domination. no one actually listens. i guess with me saying this im being a hipocrit, but even so, no of you are going to actually change someone elses out look so you might as well keep your opinions silent. and sorry if i come out offensive, i mean well with these words
It's diversity that makes us different, but pusuit of a commom ground continueously affords us opportunity to gain a better persective of us as the Human Race. We should take that into consideration at every chance we can in order to secure our survival, and the future of our children. Stevie has said this time and again, "It's not what we are, but what we can become". United in the cause of surviving & leaving a positive influence of thoughts, ideals, & framework for the coming generation
cant believe people cant understand what i was trying to say
(except coolie)..im making comment on what people have said to me in the past and how words can be twisted or took another way..i dont believe in the word racist, its there to persecute those who dont like another person from a different race, thats the right of choice i have a large collection of stevie vinyl, motown's my life so why would i call one of my heroes?..wanted another view/experience thats all but never mind, thanks.
"Heaven help the boy who won't reach 21. Heaven help the man that gave that boy a gun"....This song is so relevant still. Much like 'Living In A World They Didn't Make' by Janet Jackson. Beautiful, touching, and thought provoking.
