@annabellee8 The object of this puzzle is to finish with a spider on every point of the star. A spider starts on one point and must walk across one of the lines to another point; for every starting point there are two possible ending points, so long as one is not already filled.

This game was released for the Philips CD-I, of course it won't work on Windows 7.

@hentaipleasemalcolm: History lesson. This game was first released on the PC in 1993. It was ported to the CD-I in 1995.

Apparently there's also a Windows 95 version, but I don't know if that one works with modern Windows systems. It's probably easier to get the DOS version to work xD

It can't be used in The 7th Guest but it does become accessible in The 11th Hour, leading to the laboratory.

The laboratory is accessible but not through that passage. Instead you enter in through the chapel. Trilobyte changed the arrangement of these rooms in The 11th Hour.

I'm not exactly 100% sure, but I think it's a secret door that becomes useable later in the game. It leads to some other location in the house and it wasn't necessary to use it. I think it's a shortcut. It was a long time since I played this game.

@KojiroGanryuSasaki Yeah, and there was a book with hints in this stange library room. When you were stuck on a puzzle you were able to look into that book 3 times and your puzzle was solved then.
