This version (the 45, with echo and a faster pace) is very hard to find. I haven't seen it on CD yet, though I've been looking for years. I wish they hadn't put the siren in it, 'cause I'd really like a copy for my 'pod. I own many copies of the album and a number of compilations, all of which have the album version. Note that even though this mix is radically different it still uses the same vocal track, as evidenced by the mistake he makes: "He stale behind" rather than "He'll stay behind."
This song still makes me cry when I hear it. I can't listen through it without breaking down and sobbing. I'm almost positive that as Eric Burdon sings the first refrain of "Skyyyyyyyyy Pilot!", he sings it solo without other voices. Am I wrong?

To bad the Kid's of today don't have GREAT music like we do. Their Hip-Hop & all the other CRAP will never stand up to our music from the 50's & 60's. Long Live ROCK 'n' ROLL.!!!!!
We lost the revolution. Sadly, a lot of us died, most of the survivors joined the establishment. yet we were already being co-opt, just watch an old smothers brothers show. Of those left some never really understood. The reminder of us, well to tell the truth, we are probably insane. The world continues to drift to a godless conservative ideology. but us insane ones, Well brothers and sister peace and love will be ours when we meet our supreme maker.
Was a paean to Francis Gary Powers, but Yuri Gagarin flew higher; and Buzz Aldrin(friend of the family) flew highest of all if you're including tripping with the small steps and giant step.
Awesome song today as it was back when. It gave me a lot cause to meditate about my time in the military. I was scheduled to go to Viet Nam but they blew up the place (Quang Tri) that I was supposed to go to in 72." Instead I ended up in Germany drinking a lot of great beer. I didn't mind not being in the middle of flying bullets or bombs, but I really did feel bad for those who went instead.
Bless the peacemakers. . .but don't blame the military, they are not warmongers, just the pawns.
The revolution is still going on today. It was about bringing peoples consciousness to a state of awareness of themselves, government, war, Love for each other, understanding life, Spirituality, Compassion for mankind, and most importantly being in the now. We will continue until all mankind knows God within everything. This is an easy task but at the same time one of the hardest things to do. Keep the faith and hold fast to the void within the moment. My sincere thanks to all who have served. Please know that many Americans pray for you daily, for your safety and sanity. My own brother was shot down in Viet Nam, and lived to become a sky pilot. Bless you all!
I didn't know what a sky pilot was until I had read four books by the English Author and veterinarian who wrote All Creatures Great and Small. The funny thing is, my father who was a turret gunner on a B 17 in WWII wrote about his experiences during that time but I dIdn"t know a prayer was said for all those brave boys who flew those missions. I think of my father as a quiet hero. He would of liked this song if he hadn't disliked my generation of music. Loved this song at 17, love it still.
Yeah, back then the songs had depth and meaning, and were able to motivate tens of thousands into the streets.
Of course, hearing the Muzak version of the Stones "Street Fightin' Man over the PA in Safeway leaves me confused. Did we actually win the "Revolution" while I wasn't looking?
Or were we completely co-opted?
Probably neither, simply living our lives, keeping our heads down, while those in power make the same mistakes, learning little from the past.

@dizwiz96 As long as we're playing "what if," what if America's independence could've been won through civilized negotiation rather than killing?
Your premise seems to be that war is necessary. I say war is inevitable, but unnecessary, because some humans, especially those in power, will always use force rather than diplomacy to satisfy their greed.
If war must be waged, let it be fought by those who start it, and let it be just — not over land, resources or bigotry, as so many have been.

This was the second record I ever bought with my own 99 cents when I was 15. In the 1990's I published The University Reporter Magazine and I spoke with Eric Burden after a concert at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC. I asked him why he didn't play Sky Pilot? He said that it was no longer relevant. I said as long as there is war Sky Pilot will be relevant." he looked at me and said, "yeah maybe your right."
we have remembance on 25 april -anzac day in Australia , this song un -mollested
reminds me of the sacrifice that the pilots made -the instrumental copy of the sound of a plane and pilot plummeting to their demise brings emotion of SACRIFICE made for justice
@bluemisan yes sometime religion hide behind there bibles an most of the time they're da cause of mankind ,poverty, death, hunger, sickness ,you name it.Wat u can do is go room and slam ur head in ur bible okay,Wat u read in da bible isn't always da solution ,
@FMorales40 I did it,,,,in1973...but I remember a much longer version, with the sound of the plane falling down,,,,and exploding...and then, little by little, emerged the sound of scottish pipers...and the song started again, even more powerful and with horns....and THAT WASN´T AN ALLUCINATION OF MINE !
You are missing the point. The last thing this song endorses is the stupid suicidal militant nationalism that causes war. Wise up...your wargod is a false idol.
This is perhaps Eric Burdon and the Animals 2nd greatest hit after their cover of the legendary "House of the Rising Sun"...Dan O'Niallain, Grafton, Mass.
First heard this song in 1967. I was drafted into the U. S. Army and was stationed at Fort Huachuca Arizona. I went to 'nam for 14 mos . Made it out with all my limbs. Semper Fi.
I am 57, an anti-war activist who fought hard to bring the troops home. I was not afraid to burn my draft card or fight off the agents of social control in D.C. in 69' and 70'. Wherethe hell were you? What the hell would you know about the police action in Viet Nam to begin with? Power to the people!
these guys were right there with the british invasion. they could match the stones and beatles hit fir hit. too bad they couldn't stay together longer
I was at A Shau Valley company C. 2ndBn 506 infantry,101a long long time ago..I heard this song the first time in years.. It made me CRY and that's not a easy thing to do... Take care & God bless all the men & woman who are shouldering the load today...............................
A German soldier was captured during WW 11 and he had a belt buckle that said in German " God is with us". More people have been killed in the name of god than for any other cause,
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Unless yop have been there and done that, shut the fuck up! The only people that have the right to bitchabout wars are veterans and the families of those of those have died in combat. If this is not you SHUT THE FUCK UP!
xsabers... EVERYONE is entitled to offer their opinion on war. HOW MANY Iraqi civillians (MANY women and children) have been cruely and needlesly murdered by US soldiers?
How much has the US poisoned the Iraqi soil, air and water with their bombs and landmines..... to remain for how many millions of years? How much HATE has the US bred in the new generation of middle east boys... with this idiotic war.
have you been to Iraq? I have been there twice now and I didn't fight for GWB, oil the safety and security of the poor old Iraqi people. I fought for my comrades who where there with me in that shitty mess. I have friends who I watched die! Please tell me have you EVER had someone deliberately try to kill you? Namely a jihadist? As long as people roam this earth there will always be war. If you have not been there stop whining!
xsabers, you INVADED someone's country! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you expect Iraqis to just stand there and pick their noses when you bring your guns and bombs and DEPLETED URANIUM into their country to kill them?
AlyTennyson, if you don't agree with the politics behind a war that is one thing, but to attack a a man that placed himself where he could have given his life to protect our freedoms is low. Respect that man.
Aly, you're right. We invaded Saddam's country. It sure didn't belong to the Iraqi's and most certainly did not belong to the minority Kurds in the north. You sound like some of those misguided people who called me a baby killer and war criminal when they saw me in uniform back in the States when I returned from Vietnam in '70. I'm sure our troops appreciate your support. USAF 13 TAS NKP RTAFB, Thailand
We did what we could at the time in Vietnam. The United states was prepared for conventional warfare and we faced men in holes and booby traps around every corner. Communism was defeated by a strengthening U.S. economy and a strong NATO to back it up.
typical american thinking all u did is INVADE till your expandism is at an end and yet u fail as a country cause u all sleep. All of u speaking of communism yet none has read a book.Cause maybe u'd understand but no u would blindly kill your selves if some idiot told u so..I pity you
Not typical American thinking though because the Americans enjoy living in their country, so there are other reasons for invading. I guess both capitalism and communism aren't perfect but both still have good sides. Actually it's all about the mentality of men and not about the system. So you can misuse both capitalism and communism.
Good thinking still i am sure that if we make healthy use of both capitalism and communism that the 2nd one will give us better results but of course who is gonna look for the benefit of all.
You gotta differ that: communism is left-wing so most of the power lays in the hands of the government. So actually someone else tells you what to do and what not to do. Capitalism really leaves you more freedom. So I don't really like communism either, the problem is that many people (some banks too) just do what they want to get money, but there ARE banks that act (in my view) correct. In capitalism you can support whoever you think does 'good' things with your money.
Just read some books and see who is keeping u captured and in your land.See how Capitalism is screwing you every day and yet u thank him.If u think u defended your land against something that would enslave you then u are a fail for human thinking
its ok to feel angry ur just one of the million to σθβμιτ under the american propaganda that u defend your lands and not that u are the puppets that help them with thei imperialist politic!
It is ok for you to leave this country if you wish. Unlike other countries, where you would be killed for slandering the nation you live in. I cannot imagine a place where killing the life of another is acceptable. Should not be here either.
Dude so what? Government has all of the power no matter what. So stop pretending like ur waking people up to the corruption of the world. Ur just as much of a sheep as anyoen else.
As long as americans roam this world there will be WW u support your filthy campaigns with other countries money u have not felt a single bomb in your lands not a single city destroyed. When all of these happen i will be there watching u trying to rebuilt and miserably fail.
@xsabers72 "War hero? No. I was a doc in Vietnam. My job was to say "This is what happens when you screw a hooker, kid. Put this cream on your pecker."
@xsabers72 no but i was in nam b 1/9 marines at khe sahn . thank you for your service ,it wast a jihadist who wAS trying to kill me or my fellow marines just the enemy of our great nation.
@xsabers72 I have had someone deliberately try to kill me, only diff was my protagonist head yellow skin and fought for a political idiom whereas yours fight for their idea of God. I was a corpsman assgnd TDY to the Marines, 3 tours over 6 years. Semper Fi my brother
Couple good reads. First off Maj.Gen. Smedley Butlers " War is a Racket", and secondly Mark Twains " War Prayer" which shows the Insanity of any Religion blessing those who go to kill or be killed for those in Power.
Enjoy it for what it is. Put the other issues aside. Was a tough time for everyone. If you were there, then you can bellyache, if not, quite whinning.
pray we dont sacrifice our gorgeous young Americans for some crap mess in Afghanistan. There is more than two sides of hell all working to kill each other there. What do we need to prove that we have not already done so many lives already in our ground. why more?
Then there is also 'unknown soldiers'- never even identified but taken back home and buried. why.
they should play this song before they sentence tony bliar in the hague for war crimes and yeah maybe pigs might fly first

One result of giving up on Vietnam was that a million Cambodians would die at the hands of the Khmer Rouge.
Vietnam taught us several difficult, costly lessons.
Never go in less than 100% committed. (Difficult to do while avoiding war with China and the USSR.)
Don't let reporters run free in war zones. (They end up getting people killed. How many lost their lives for Jane Fonda?.)
Was the Vietnam War worth it? It was a bitter, expensive, valuable lesson.

AlyTennyson 2 years ago
have you been to Iraq? I have been there twice now and I didn't fight for GWB, oil the safety and security of the poor old Iraqi people. I fought for my comrades who where there with me in that shitty mess. I have friends who I watched die! Please tell me have you EVER had someone deliberately try to kill you? Namely a jihadist? As long as people roam this earth there will always be war. If you have not been there stop whining!
xsabers72 2 years ago 20
xsabers, you INVADED someone's country! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you expect Iraqis to just stand there and pick their noses when you bring your guns and bombs and DEPLETED URANIUM into their country to kill them?
AlyTennyson 2 years ago
AlyTennyson, if you don't agree with the politics behind a war that is one thing, but to attack a a man that placed himself where he could have given his life to protect our freedoms is low. Respect that man.
woodyman91 2 years ago 2
Aly, you're right. We invaded Saddam's country. It sure didn't belong to the Iraqi's and most certainly did not belong to the minority Kurds in the north. You sound like some of those misguided people who called me a baby killer and war criminal when they saw me in uniform back in the States when I returned from Vietnam in '70. I'm sure our troops appreciate your support. USAF 13 TAS NKP RTAFB, Thailand

there won´t be peace without justice. look at vietnam. We believed we have to defend our freedom against communism. But communism defeated itself.
even0208 2 years ago
We did what we could at the time in Vietnam. The United states was prepared for conventional warfare and we faced men in holes and booby traps around every corner. Communism was defeated by a strengthening U.S. economy and a strong NATO to back it up.
woodyman91 2 years ago 3
sure, we did what we could, but it was not enough and I am affraid same will happen in Afganistan and Iraq
even0208 2 years ago 3
typical american thinking all u did is INVADE till your expandism is at an end and yet u fail as a country cause u all sleep. All of u speaking of communism yet none has read a book.Cause maybe u'd understand but no u would blindly kill your selves if some idiot told u so..I pity you
Oneirot 2 years ago
Not typical American thinking though because the Americans enjoy living in their country, so there are other reasons for invading. I guess both capitalism and communism aren't perfect but both still have good sides. Actually it's all about the mentality of men and not about the system. So you can misuse both capitalism and communism.
Acyroable 2 years ago
Good thinking still i am sure that if we make healthy use of both capitalism and communism that the 2nd one will give us better results but of course who is gonna look for the benefit of all.
Oneirot 2 years ago
You gotta differ that: communism is left-wing so most of the power lays in the hands of the government. So actually someone else tells you what to do and what not to do. Capitalism really leaves you more freedom. So I don't really like communism either, the problem is that many people (some banks too) just do what they want to get money, but there ARE banks that act (in my view) correct. In capitalism you can support whoever you think does 'good' things with your money.
Acyroable 2 years ago
Just read some books and see who is keeping u captured and in your land.See how Capitalism is screwing you every day and yet u thank him.If u think u defended your land against something that would enslave you then u are a fail for human thinking

It is ok for you to leave this country if you wish. Unlike other countries, where you would be killed for slandering the nation you live in. I cannot imagine a place where killing the life of another is acceptable. Should not be here either.

pray we dont sacrifice our gorgeous young Americans for some crap mess in Afghanistan. There is more than two sides of hell all working to kill each other there. What do we need to prove that we have not already done so many lives already in our ground. why more?
Then there is also 'unknown soldiers'- never even identified but taken back home and buried. why.
