The optics are very interesting but I think a bit difficult. I tried to do it to show a candle plume but not successful with simple equipment. Simple shadowgraph did work.
Schlieren Technique is one of method to visualize the shock wave structure using optical technique.The other method that can be used is called Shadowgraphs Technique/Planar Laser Induced Fluorescene Technique(PLIF).It is very interesting!!
