To those asking about gloves, its common to NOT wear gloves when handling acid.

If you spill acid on your hand, you can quickly wash it off. If you spill acid IN your glove, you may have difficulty removing the glove, and can increase your exposure to the acid.

When we do this, we stick a glass stirring rod so the sulfuric acid will reach the bottom quicker. So for us the reaction only takes about 20 seconds, we also use A LOT more sugar

For those who want to know how this happened.

Sulfuric acid acts as an enzyme and separates the bond between the sucrose its chemical composition is C12H22O11 the carbon separates which is the black stuff and the hydrogen and the oxygen combine and form water which is the steam you see the reason is because massive amounts of heat are produced so it boils the water. Now carbon has more volume that the sucrose long with the fact that it is filled with steam bubbles so thats why it erects. charlim
