  • angela does a fine version i think if u were to see the original musicall performance u would notice she doesnt usually lipsync...

  • helena bonham carter cant do a role better that angela lansbury originated...

  • Helen Bonham Carter can't sing this live. Angela Lansbury can, and has won a Tony to prove it.

  • Helena Bonham es mejor!!

  • you cant really compare angela lansbury and helena bonham carter because one of them is broadway and a LIVE performance which is much harder than performing in a movie... carter was amazing buuuut she did hav a recording studio and could redo any scenes she wanted... u cant do tht on stage

  • Gotta give anyone credit for singing Sondheim's songs

  • I love her so much <3

  • Helena Bonham Carter's version was better. She was such a natural at playing Mrs Lovett.

  • Angela Lansbury is so far the better actress who played Mrs Lovett. Nevertheless, Helena Bonham Carter has her style, as Patti Lupone.

  • SHE IS NOT LIP SINGING SHE DID MRS POTTS...MRS POTTS HAD A VERRY SIMMALER VOICE TO THIS!!!!!

  • I don't understand why people say Burton took the comedy out of it, he just made it more subtle.

  • She's not lip syncing. That's her voice.

  • @RijiiRizu I agree, she is not lip syning, I think that it is just the sound gets a little off in the middle. You see that a lot with older videos like this one.

  • Can't really compare Angela's version with Helena's version.......they both did it in their own unique ways really.

  • Let me just say to all the people saying that Helena Bonham Carter did it better, you have to remember singing on the stage is WAY harder than just singing in front of the microphone. I believe they both did it beautifully.

  • oh my god she's amazing

  • people seem to think these people are better, i personally don't. I think Johnney Depp and Helena Bonham Carter do it much better, one because their better singers and two because the characters need to have darker personalities.

  • @anoymoose You are absolutely wrong! Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd is a musical comedy. Tim Burton turned it into a dramatic picture which was clearly not Sondheim's intention. And no! Helena Bonham Carter is not better in the role of Mrs. Lovett simply because she is a British dramatic actress. Maybe, Tim Burton wanted a dramatic actress, but that is simply because Tim Burton wanted drama and completely destroyed the comedic aspect of Sweeney Todd.

  • @cfronck The film still has humour, it's just that Burton specialises in 'dark' films so he used black comedy. He actually followed the story quite closely as the original play is supposed to revolve around revenge and obsession - it's an adaptation, not an exact replica. It still includes the original's famous lines of comedy ie. this song, and 'By the Sea', but to make the film more comedic would ruin the main point of the story - I personally believe darker humour fits perfectly.

  • @cfronck you know, i don't mind you disagreeing with my opinion. But saying i'm absolutely wrong is completely out of line. have more respect

  • @anoymoose Oh no. I'm sorry, I wasn't saying that you were wrong. I was stating that I thought Tim Burton's approach to Sweeney was wrong because he took the comedy out. I was merely informing you that the original piece that Steve wrote was a comedy, and Burton made it a drama.

  • @anoymoose johnny depp is deffinitly not the better singer. he may be the better actor, but directors need to remember when they cast roles for musicals that they need singers, not just popular actors who will get there movies alot of pess attention

  • @anoymoose johnny depp is deffinitly not the better singer. he may be the better actor, but directors need to remember when they cast roles for musicals that they need singers, not just popular actors who will get there movies alot of pess attention

btw patti lupone sings this song wayy better than anyone else

  • Unpopular Opinion: Helena Bonham Carter does it better :/

  • @Marina9417SP You're nuts.

  • @Marina9417SP That's your opinion (you're probably a teenager). Helena probably only got that part because she's Tim Burton's girlfriend!

  • @tagdam1 Yes, it's my opinion. And yes, she probably got it because she's Tim Burton's girlfriend (and I don't think she's a very good singer). But I still like her acting better than Angela's.

  • @Marina9417SP HBC missed half of the acting beats in the song!

  • @Marina9417SP much better!

  • @Marina9417SP Not better, just different :).

  • @Lilacsinm fair enough :3

  • @Marina9417SP Unpopular, and incorrect.

  • @Marina9417SP I think all of the version are pretty good, if you ask me...

  • Helena is so much better it's unreal. Ppl say Helena can't sing but she is better then that. And Helena make mrs Lovett Soooooo much better

  • OMG that is hilarious! I wish I had seen her version first! I really needed that laugh :-)

  • AMAZING as always angela! no one is lypsincing,

  • she is absolutely not lipsyncing

  • @Marshellcab47 she is, cos she kinda misses her cue at the start at 1:00, she comes in late

  • @MusicalsFan15 its just crap quality i think

  • @Marshellcab47 She absolutely is lip syncing... This is the version from the OBC Album from 79

  • I don't know if this was discussed in the previous comments, but I don't think this is from the "original Tony award telecast" where Sweeney won. Where's Len Cariou? He was there; he won that night, too...I think this is from two years later, the 1981 Tony Award show, where they had numbers performed from many recent best musicals. I think that may be Walter Charles, an understudy, as Todd, here. It certainly isn't Cariou or Hearn....

  • I don't think her lipsyncing was bad, (trust me, i've seen far worse) but I couldn't really understand because it was so fast.

  • WONDERFUL !

  • This is not lip syncing

  • Mrs Potts just said pussies and slut in under 4 minutes, the child in me just died

  • Wow. There's a lot of true Sweeney Todd haters on here. Goodness. A true fan would love the stage just as much as the film. This was written in 1979 by Stephen Sondheim (as the video stated) and things were different then and now. Seriously, quit comparing and just enjoy the beauty of Sweeney Todd.

  • Lansbury is an absolute treasure. May she live forever.

  • mrs. lovett is pretty much demonic, guys. she's not sweet, she's legitimately crazy. she's insane. remember that she is the one who was like, "hey, let's put these dead people into pies and sell them." also, this video is crappy quality. she's not faking. angela lansbury is fantastic. back up.

  • this is proof enough...Helena will always be THE Mrs. Lovett!!!!!!!

  • @inuyasha6457 No. Patti LuPone in the concert version will always be THE Mrs. Lovett! Just enough crazy, just enough sweetness.... Perfect!

  • yeah, but not enough pretty

  • @inuyasha6457 I lol'd fairly hard. You're taking proof of one shitty video and calling the worst rendition of Mrs Lovett 'THE' Mrs Lovett?

    You're a funny person. :)

  • who does the what now?

  • @inuyasha6457 lol

  • @tooner14 because that IS her

  • @theatrestephy Don't you be going there bitch!

  • I've watched this a few times, and she's lipsynching. If you watch and listen, there is no background noise at all. There's an audience, but even they sound canned.

  • @602funnybone it's possible, but I kind of doubt it

I think it's more likely they just had very, very good stage mics

but if she IS lipsynching, so what, that just makes it all the more amazing that she could exactly duplicate in a studio a performance she gave on a stage!

  • wow the woman from murder she wrote she rules...!!!

  • AMAZING *-*

  • I think she is lipsyncing. I saw this special on TV, and I remember noticing that she was lipsyncing.

  • @FamGuyFreak100 You do know that this is the same women as who plays Mrs. Potts on Beauty and the Beast. I have seen her. She can sing

  • @TheAlmostMadHatter That's true; she can sing beautifully (I just stopped tearing up when I hear her sing "Beauty and the Beast"), wither it's live or on film. But, since this was for TV, there is a strong possibility that she was lipsyncing. It doesn't say anything about her, but, in my opinion, she's lipsyncing in this video.

  • maybe it's the quality.. But she looks like a robot, 'cause shes moving so....

  • this is great. amazing

  • I like the Helena Bonham Carter version better. ;/

  • @roguecereal Not at singing, she isn't. Most of her vocal tracks were auto-tuned. But like others have said before me, in other capacities, it is impossible to compare the movie and stage versions.

  • What is up with that makeup? lolz

  • This is a TRUE Mrs. Lovett :)

  • it may be just me but i dont think that lansbury has the vocal power to play mrs lovett patti lupone on the other hand..

  • *lol* I love the words "an amoral, slutty little soul coming from the East End" coming out of AL's mouth! lol

  • Oh man she can't lipsynch for her life...

But hey, it's Angela Lansbury. She can get away with it! :D

Loveeee Sweeney Todd with all my heart :)

  • can't believe she is sybil vane! :D

  • She is lip synching to the cast album here and the reason probably would be because this was an awards show and they coulodnt bring the whole Sweeney Todd orchestra along to do one number, plus, getting the live sound recorded and balanced properly for a television broadcast is a whole lot of work, so for this one little song they would have just told her to mime to the playback tape to save a lot of trouble and money.

  • why is she lipsinking shes a good singer??

  • The movie and stage version are two different mediums, it's really hard to compare them.

  • @HauntedRobin I agree. A lot off people failed to understand that this version off sweeney todd is more sadistic. They convey darkness with cynical humor. As opposed to the main stream darkness that most people need to get the message that it is dark. lol. This is sad to me.

  • wow she was lip synching badly oh well i still love her

  • Dear Maggie Mae:

NO, that's NOT what Len Cariou looked like as Sweeney Todd. That's not Sweeney Todd.

Yes, within the context of the show, the song is sung by Mrs. Lovett to Sweeney Todd, but for this clip, they've replaced his character with a generic "customer".

As the song is performed here out of context, they couldn't expect Len Cariou to appear in costume and makeup just to listen to the song. Had they dressed up a "nobody" as Sweeney Todd, it would have stolen focus.

  • why is she lpi syncing?

  • So that's what Len looks like as Sweeney. He looks really friendly. o.o

  • me gusta mas la versión de Tim Burton...

  • Jerry Orbach

  • Wait.

    Hold on!

    The announcer.. what's his name?

And wonderful performance by Angela! :)

  • she would totally use cats...if she was able to catch them :)

  • i think this performance is to rushed, the singing anyways. the performance by helena bomber carter, is much more polished and accurate.

  • It's more polished... because it's Auto tuned. It's done almost all in the studio.

  • well, that's a movie.

    this is LIVE.

so obviously it won't be as polished.

Angela did a wonderful job either way.

    Both of them did, :)

I couldn't think of two of other people who could do a better job

  • Carter had a completely different style. She was also rushing a bit because that's how the song is. Carter also had the help of camera magic and didn't need to project her voice or gestures because it's not onstage. There's a reason why broadway actors rarely reprise their roles in movie versions of the shows they starred in. The two require very different methods of acting. Not that Lansbury isn't great on film, but she can't be too subtle in a theater.

  • Couldn't have said it better myself!

  • well, what do you expect? in theater you cant just stop the music and record it again if you mess up or aren't completely accurate.

  • one of the most brilliant women to grace the stage in history.

  • Thats not Lipsyncing, Thats her ACTUAL Voice .

  • It is her actual voice, but she is lipsyncing to a recording of it.

  • Shes syncing her lips with the backing track.

    Hence the term "lip-sync".

  • Who plays Todd here?

  • Comment removed

  • not Michael Cerveris?

  • i love how she goes on about how she wouldnt put a cat in her pie it would be sick yet she will stick in sweeneys killings!

  • amazing....

  • Her make-up reminds me of betty Davis's in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane.

  • The actor performing with Angela in this is Frank Kopyc, I think. He was a memeber of the original ensemble.

  • Thats not Len Cariou

  • its not?

  • Had the pleasure of seeing Miss Landsbury and Len Cariou perform on Broadway.

    They were absolutely awesome.

  • @JTPolo101 I would so pay a thousand dollars - what a treat!

  • @JTPolo101 Lucky! =D

  • @JTPolo101 I saw the show on Broadway, I can't remember if it was Len, or George, but Angela was there, and the show was great!

  • It's well known that this clip is a lip synched performance. Not her fault. This was just for the 1979 Tony Awards, and they had her lip sync it. No big deal. We all know she doesn't need to. Her "real" performance at the Uris was live every night.

She's still brilliant in this, regardless.

  • i dont shes faking..i thinks the poor video quality.

  • I dont know if it is bad quality or not...But that is her real voice..she might be lip syncing..but that is her real voice..so she is just lip syncing to her real voice..or it is just bad quality!!

  • Its not bad quality its the same as the DVD Quality, I saw it in Theatre Class

  • @robwhite92 yea she isnt

  • @robwhite92 no, it's lip-s

  • @robwhite92 also, don't forget, its old video quality so of coarse it is not going to sound good

  • all i have to say is ..... ocward !

  • She sounds like Mrs.Potts from Beauty & the Beast.

  • She's the person who did Mrs. Potts' voice.

  • she is is Mrs.Potts she did the voice

  • I just want to know who that guy was

  • IF she is lipsynching i wonder why?

  • Maybe she lost her voice.

  • Is that Len Carious sitting there?

  • No, that's...an understudy?

  • Perhaps it is just a sync error? Great performance!

  • I love the applause Angela recevies when she appears onstage...

  • I was watching this documentary and saw this...at first I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me :/ It's sad.

  • Yes, she is lipsyching they took it off of the original album. shame i know

  • Wow, is Angela really lipsyncing? o.O

Thank you for the vid! I love seeing Angela as Lovett acting with a different Sweeney other than Hearn.

  • Thank you!
