"the linux operating system was created between 1991 and 1994 by this guy named Linus Torvalds" Oh boy, get ready for Richard Stallman's angry letters.
Thanks for the clarification. Your video is very clean and concise. While universities serve their place, these videos are great launching grounds for those who like independent learning.
Linux is buggy and not up to snuff? What are you talking about, buddy? I'm no computer nerd, but I switched to Ubuntu a few months back and haven't had any issues; it runs smoothly and does everything I need and more. What can't it do that Windows offers? Gaming? I could see that, but to say it crashes or freezes up all the time is off the mark.
@Max404s I'm old... 35 and I'm showing my years... Back in the 90's the shells were called GUI's and LUI's... I've been smacked on the hands by the Linux guys and from now on I use the "CLI" terminology...
@elithecomputerguy Ah okay, fair enough - but I am not so young myself. When I got an Amiga in 1988, the AmigaDOS shell was called 'CLI', if I remember correctly, so I have known that term for quite a while. Later, in Workbench 1.3 it was renamed 'Shell'.
very educational i do disagree with your statement about desktop linux not being a good desktop OS i find desktop linux like ubuntu is ready for primetime and in someways far more raliable than desktop windows.
@staj The next one in the track is "Installing Linux' The playlist for Linux is in order.... also you can go to EverymanIT [dot] com and I have the class notes and such there
thanks, got it. quick question: I found some commands on google and ran "sudo shutdown -h now", for some reason (or maybe I erroneously hit a key on the keyboard) Ubuntu booted up to the LUI login screen, I tried to get back on the GUI holding down the Ctrl, Alt and F keys and I luckily hit the right combination and the GUI logon screen came back on. Can you please give some info on what happened? i.e. how to boot directly to the LUI, and how to get back to the GUI, thanks.
1: Linux is a kernel, not an OS. GNU/Linux is an OS.
2: GNU, while not technically code-compatible with Unix, is essentially a Unix clone. Thus its recursive acronym (Gnu's Not Unix).
3: Open-source software is, by definition, modifiable and redistributable with virtually no restrictions (even commercially). What you're calling 'open source' in this video is actually 'source available' software. Google 'open source definition', it's the first link.
Sadly, everyone forgets Richard Stallman who created GNU. So the correct name is GNU/Linux. Linux by itself is not a complete operating system, so Linus Torvalds only created half of this OS. Linux is only the kernel without GNU. Richard Stallman was responsible for the GNU licence to ensure that GNU/Linus would always remain free.
Oh my... Linus only created the kernel. To say that Linus created an entire operating system from the ground up is just plain wrong, the GNU project had already made an OS but what missing a kernel, they had worked on it a decade.
Im taking unix/ Linux operating system class this semester, and this video was helpful for me, since I'm kind of new with comp, but I want to study in the field of computer science.
Nice video! I would like to comment on a few things though; Linus created the Linux kernel only. I'm sure you're aware of this but I think it's important to tell that what you use when you install Linux on a computer is actually GNU/Linux. Richard Stallman's contribution is as important as the kernel.
I also disagree on your opinion that Linux is not suited for the desktop. I've helped people switch to Linux and they are very enthusiastic. I don't recognize the problems you mention using it.
you are really helpful man inshaa allah you will be a successful man in your life best of luck Eli and cheers for the great achievement of yours because you have really good knowledge about administration

@weward Honestly I just spend 30-60 minutes a day doing individual research, and when a client asks about a product I fully look into it whether or not they actually buy it.

Hello ELI thanks for the video I encourage you to continue spreading all your knowledge with the world, for some of us this is the only way to learn the wonderful world of science and technology greetings from colombia.
Nice informative video. Learned some new things about open source and the licensing. But like a few others, I love linux as a desktop...at least for the past 2.5 years.
"2008 Windows Server for $60 and you own the software". No, totally and completely wrong. No one but Microsoft owns that software. No one but Microsoft has the rights to modify that software. What you buy is the licence, not the software. Windows install CD has no value, the licence key is what matters.
Many open source licences actually enables you to really own the software itself. As you said, you can even modify and sell it - what you can't do is change its licence when doing so.
also linux have more bad drivers than windows also third parties sw. linux have in it historial burn down hw, for pretty bad drivers. also no compatibility. linux kill hw.
@icguilty I disagree with your claim with this. Most drivers (except for proprietary drivers) are supported by Linux; if you can't find a correct driver for your machine, you can download it and install it in your machine. Also, Linux have package managers that allows us to update firmware.
For example, I had to clean install one of my old laptops from Windows XP to Lubuntu Linux. After installation, I cannot activate the built-in Wi-fi, so I had to download the latest firmware via Synaptic.
with linux u have 5% of loss perfomance. because linux is a O.S by sw. not hw like windows. i note that. with the same hw when u install linux u have 5% loss in hw. also is vry xpensive if u pay the license.
@icguilty Actually, I don't have suffer the 5% loss of performance you are claiming about. The bad thing about Windows is that since it uses NTFS, it writes all the files everywhere, that's why Windows computers suffers slow performance and needs to defrag while on Linux, you don't need to defrag your HDD, because Linux's filesystems (ext2, ext3, etc) writes the files so neatly.
@icguilty I know how to configure a Windows server correctly as well, but I have one question; why do you have only one server turned on? what happened to the other two?
I dunno if you've played with any Linux server (I use Ubuntu for testing purposes), it's easier to configure DHCP and DNS in Linux because they're all configuration files, wheras in Windows you have to install the DHCP and DNS service, reboot it, and then set it up the long way.
I would have to disagree with you on the usage of Linux as a desktop system. I haven't has those problems with Ubuntu or Opensuse. the only time the operating system froze was because of a hardware issue with a wireless card or a bad video card. I feel that Ubuntu could be used in a enterprise environment with in a small business setting. After people have been properly trained of course. It would save thousands of dollars in license fees.
you have got to be kidding me, have you even tried Opensuse, mint, pardus, arch, Gentoo. If you had you would have loved KDE or gnome. You probably tried Ubuntu with unity( it sucks). No way you a computer geek, because real ones don't bitch about a problem, they fix it.

There is some confusion with the term "open source". Open source can still be proprietary and protected by copyright. A better term is "free software". This term was originally created by Richard Stallman and defined in the Free Software manifesto. Stallman wrote the GNU, which was a set of software utilities that worked with the Linux kernal to make a useful operating system. So, the correct term for linux is actually GNU/Linux.
Just found your videos, man. Fantastic job. I have watched the one on mapping and am a few minutes into this one and you really do a fantastic job. Great (accurate) info and very nicely delivered.
I Use Ubuntu 4 my Desktop , I've been using Windows 4 about 14years and i would say one thing about Windows, i-e.. Its SuckkkkkkssssSSSSS,
I love linux/Ubuntu 4 desktop Coz once u Configure it Correctly,it will not crash like windows, other benefit of Linux is.. its Performance not decrease with time just like Windows, I'm not Comparing Linux & Windows here, Coz both has Adv/Dis but i would say that, u must try to use Linux on Desktop as Well, specially Ubuntu.Give it a try
Open source is about making software compatible, writing drivers for one component to another, Some developers change the driver or app or one company to make it compatible to theirs, however written agreements will have to be set and in some cases warranty is lost. RedHat voids warranty if any part of their distribution is touched. In Ending open source is for compatibility issues but also making ones own inhouse OS as well.
@lamrof open source is about having... opened source to everyone, if you distribute source of your software it means your software is open source, if you dont it means it's closed source. What you talking about is something compliantly different, things like that are solved by documented specifications, standards and polices, which also can be open or closed (you publish specification or not and other people need to reverse engineer), you can have closed software which will use open standards
Impressive length and video quality. Some facts, on the other hand, are highly misleading. History omits GNU project, but fine. Open source, however, has specific definiton that contradicts your statements. For instance, modifying the source must be allowed or it's not open source. The same applies to sharing the source code. Please, use Wikipedia to look it up. What you were talking about is not Open source, but plain proprietary software.
linux was created in 1991 also linus didnt create everything in linux he created the kernel and combined it with the GNU Tools created by richard stallman thus combing the 2 of them to create a full operating system
The only thing I disagree with was the comment about Linux not being fit for desktop use. I use Kubuntu 10.10 with KDE 4.6.1 and I love it! In the hands of someone not afraid to learn the CLI the operating system is rock solid! I have totally abandoned windows 7 on my computers.
@n4h0j85 He says something like "I am a computer pro and even I have problems." Irony is that advanced users usually have more problems switching to Linux than beginners, as they're more set in their ways. And Linux is different, so you have to revise your habits. And there indeed are problems caused by Linux's low desktop market share that people have to deal with. On the other hand, you're right. Linux _is_ usable on desktop. I've been using it for more than 8 years now.
Ok, 20 minitues talking about licensing issues.
Skip to 21:00 to get past the boring part ;)

@elithecomputerguy of course, but you must buy Windows again right?
sxyTuXeDoZ 3 months ago
@cosmicgate07 you can have Linux and Windows OS on one PC, so you can boot Linux or Windows OS as you like.

linux was created in 1991 also linus didnt create everything in linux he created the kernel and combined it with the GNU Tools created by richard stallman thus combing the 2 of them to create a full operating system

Thank you for this informative video.

Canonical has commercial support for their Ubuntu system. Just so that people don't get confused.
